katie phang, lisa rubin, and laura jarrett. what did you think of stormy daniels, how did she do from actually seeing her live as opposed to reading it cold? >> she did a spectacular job. stormy daniels' testimony did not come across as rehearsed. there was an authenticity to her. whether you liked it or not, because of the sincerity, it didn't seem she rehearsed or practiced. given, she had prepared. and she did a great job. and i think she knew that even though -- i call it a detour, not a sideshow, but a detour, the case took a detour to explore what happened between her and donald trump, because you had to create the foundation of why that payment was made by michael cohen and how it, you know, got to the level of the business records being falsified. but you needed to have that dialogue, and what was really important is everybody likes to say that this is a paper case, but it is about humanity in some way, right? people's courage, people's involvement with others, extramarital affairs, you know, hush money payments. i mean

legal contributor and host of "the katie phang show" on msnbc, also barbara mcquade, former u.s. attorney and professor at the university of michigan law school and an msnbc legal analyst. so, yamiche, you were there, just as this decision came out. what are we learning about this decision? >> well, this decision is the supreme court saying the atf was wrong when it banned bump stocks as part of a regulation that was passed under former president donald trump and in particular the justices, this is a 6-3 split decision along ideological lines, the conservative justices here is aing it is wrongaing. it is wrong to regulate it and to consider it a machine gun. i want to read part of the concurring opinion here that justice alito wrote. i think it is really important. this 2018 ban went into effect after a 2017 shooting in las vegas where 58 people were killed in a shooting where the shooter used a bump stock. the horrible shooting spree in las vegas in 2017 did not change the statutory text or its meaning but an event that highlights the need to mandate a law does not change the la

catch katie phang every saturday right here on msnbc. and now to breaking news from the supreme court. the justices upholding a law that bars domestic abusers from owning guns. it was an 8-1 decision with justice thomas filing the lone dissent. walk us through the big decision today. >> really this all started two years ago in a decision that expanded gun rights. it fit into a pattern for the supreme court, basically since 2008 in a series of these rulings that have expanded gun rights. that one two years ago, said the second amendment expanded outside the home. it wasn't the case that the second amendment only allowed someone to have a gun at home. since that decision, lower courts have really had a lot of trouble figuring out what exactly the supreme court was trying to say. it spurred a lot of confusion in lower courts and different opinions at the appellate level, going in different directions. what the court is doing is bringing back guardrails and guidance to their decision two years ago, and giving these lower courts some interpre

'll. >>> the hearing in the classified documents case in florida has ended for the day. judge aileen cannon heard arguments, including whether to modify the bond application on donald trump's release, specifically on jack smith's motion to gag order him. let's bring in katie phang who was inside the courthouse and has been liberated. katie, what happened today? >> reporter: we just got out of the hearing. it starting at 3:00. just got out at 5:00. it didn't go well for the government. there was a tense moment between judge aileen cannon and the special counsel where she dressed him down and said, i don't appreciate your tone. i expect a quorum of all time. if not, one of your colleagues can take on this motion. she was challenging him as to whether or not things like redactions that have been done in public filings, protecting the names of witnesses, including law enforcement, are sufficient. she in

joining us is mike memoli, katie phang, a host of a shot here on msnbc, and david marcus, a professor at the university of miami school of law. what is the latest from the courtroom, mike? >> reporter: the judge has called a break, as hallie biden was asked how she reacted. she said set panicked. she realized it was a mistake. she also talked earlier when she discovered that he was abusing drugs. they had begun to form a relationship not long after the death of beau biden, and she's embarrassed this time in her life, but she occasionally joined him in that drug abuse. we have seen over the protwo days, the prosecution produced mounds of evidence that puts in stark relief the extent of hunter biden's addiction, how long, how frequently he abused drugs, but did he believe himself to be abusic drugs at the time of his handgun on october 12th of 2018. so far, the witnesses that have been called have not spoke to his potential use during that time. we may see hallie -- obviously the -- and at that time he did not commit a violation of law by saying he was not an addict at the time of that

. >> back with us now is laura jarrett, lisa rubin, and katie phang.and his allies? i know you've been focused on the last part of that. for example, trump was allowed a special area to rent and rave against the judicial system and lie blatantly. and his son and allies were allowed to keep their phones while in court. why was that? >> i will give you what i think is the only reasonable argument for it and then stipulate that it has been abused and wildly so. the legitimate reason is for his own security. these were arrangements made between the court and secret service. there is a street blocked off for his motorcade to approach the entrance. they use separate elevators and he has his own holding rooms. and when he appeared for the press conferences, he came through a set of doors beyond which are those holding rooms. but there are things going on that been abused. the first is the reserved seats. those are to be for extra members of his defense team and that's how the have used the bright side. but in trump's case he's using it for a rotating circuit

i want to bring in nbc's katie phang outside the courthouse and florida. h me, former senior fbi official chuck rosenberg who is an msnbc legal analyst. katy, tell us what the big news is there. >> reporter: we wrapped just shy of two hours at about 12:00, a motion to dismiss by donald trump con concerning the funding of jack smith. i'd like to note that jam smith was not here today. what happens at 3:00 is special counsel jack smith's motion to modify donald trump's bond conditions. the defense is teeing it up as a gag order, but really what special counsel smith is seeking to do in this instance is to make sure those irresponsible false statements that you just read to the viewers right now, that donald trump is not allowed to say those outside in public for fear of causing harm to law enforcement officers. the defense has argued in opposition this is an unlawful restriction on donald trump's free speech. in fact, emil bovie, one of the lawyers for donald trump previewed the argument says, judge, they want to gag president trump on the campaign trail. did

katie phang joins us now as well as glenn kirschner, msnbc legal analyst. katie, couple of different cases to touch on here. let's start with the gag order in the hush money case. fill us in. what changes, exactly? >> so looking at the order itself, so the gag order that pertained to the witnesses has been terminated. the people of the state of new york had no objections to that portion being terminated. that means donald trump, to talk about the trial witnesses, now, also what got terminated was the jurors. in terms of the -- donald trump speaking about the jurors, he can do that. the one thing that judge merchan said that he didn't want to touch is a disclosure of the jurors information. he wants to keep that private, wants to make sure that doesn't get out for obvious safety concerns. one thing that was not overturned in any way by judge merchan when it pertains to the gag order is the issue of the d.a.'s office, the staff, the family members, the court staff, because the sentencing is coming up on july 11th, judge merchan said there is still work that ne
