ktvu katie utehs was right there an the crash scene. what is the latest katie. >> reporter: the crash happened in the westbound lanes but still in the eastbound lane. that is the trailer, the load from the semi truck. i'm told it's filled with cattle grain. at this point tow trucks are trying to right the trailer so they can tow it out of here. i don't know if you can see, my photographer can zoom in. you can see skid marks on the roadway. it looks like they have seconds to swerve and miss this trailer as it came crashing over the center divide. as i said the initial wreck happened in the westbound lanes. there are two vehicles involved. there was a pickup truck that was perhaps stalled along westbound and the semi truck driver may have swerved to try to miss that pickup truck. it's still early in the investigation. chp is not quite sure. chp tells me the one passenger the pickup truck was transported. it is causing a major traffic delay. let me take you if the video. you can see the the backup. this is collision -- this collation has ca

katie utehs is there on the scene and she's gonna tell us what happened. katie? >> reporter: well, sal, that collision happened in the westbound lanes. we're standing in the eastbound lanes where the aftermath is still causing a problem. you can see only two lanes opened eastbound at 580 and vasco road. as my photographer moves over, you can see this is still the semitruck trailer. i'm told that that is a container full. they are trying to right it. it spilled and crews to have try to flip it upright before they can tow it off the instate to the next exit. so the chp is having to shut down these eastbound lanes to get this truck off the roadway. let me show you some video from when we first arrived. the crash happened aferped around -- around 4:15. you can see the semitruck in the westbound lanes of i-580. i'm told the semi may have swerved to miss a pickup truck that was possibly stalled along the road. chp is still investigating. they are not sure if the issue with the semitruck came first or the issue with the pickup truck. the driver of the pickup truck was t

katie utehs has been out there since 4:30 this morning. n talking to students and the assistant principal. katie? >> reporter: many students are still emotionally shaken. one young woman i spoke with said that her family has been sleeping outside since the quake because they are too nervous about things falling on them with the aftershocks. so many of these students are returning tired and still upset about what has happened but the assistant principal wants to assure them that that's one of the safest places they can be because of the strict building codes in california. this building held up beautifully. the problem was debris and a few light fike churs that came down -- fakes fixtures that came down. all public schools are back open. the buildings have been deemed structurally sound. students and teachers will be talking about what happened. they won't be doing an actual earthquake drill where students evacuate. other schools in the district will. but the high school made that decision. they practice that several times a year. and they h
