vance does not have. quite frankly, to be honest with you, the conversations i've had, katy, over the last six to eight hours indicate to me that j.d. vance is in the front running. as we wrote in our afternoon edition today, nothing is official until it comes out of trump's mouth. even then nothing is official in donald trump's universe. i would say this, if vance or rubio are chosen, a governor from a red state would have a selection to put someone new in the senate. i will say this. j.d. vance has spent his short time in washington, not there that long as a senator, marching basically in lockstep with the trump line. has translated trump's language to the halls of congress which is what i think a lot of people in trump's orbit want. they want somebody who is a quote, unquote, fighter, somebody who doesn't stray too far off the page. in j.d. vance, they'll get that. i think that's exactly what they're looking for. to be honest with you, i think a lot of people on capitol hill will be happy about that as well. seeing j.d. vance as a fellow traveler in donald trump's orbit and someone who says what he says a

vance as their mouth piece for that? >> katy, i will give you the same request that i made to vaughn hillyard, i know you are in the middle of all of it. if you wrangle anybody interesting, wave your arms we will come right back to you, thank you for your great reporting, my friend. claire, i know katy didn't intend to say this, but just because j.d. vance said that the assassination attempt, which is a horrific and heinous act, i believe i've read it reported that it's been investigated as an act of domestic terrorism, it is at a minimum a horrible security failure. if we can't protest the most powerful republican in the country, i'm not sure how we convince foreign leaders to come. i mean, it's a horrific story. but there is absolutely no evidence that it has anything to do with anything president joe biden said or did or anything that's been in the media that hasn't surfaced as a part of this story. i wonder -- i worry, i guess, and i'm sure katy simply reporting what she's hearing, that some of that disinformation is calcify

vance is, i think a lot of americans don't. so as katy noted, this is really an opportunity to introduce the vice presidential nominee to the american people. when i worked with mitt romney and paul ryan in 2012, that was the first opportunity we had for people to get to know who paul ryan was, even though a lot of people around politics had gotten to know him and his policies and the things he stood for. so it will be an opportunity for that. but i also think in terms of articulating what this america first agenda is, we hear about america first applied in the national security context, in the economic policy context. it will be a chance potentially, if they choose to go in this direction, for senator vance to put some meat on the bones. what does that mean to have an america first economic policy or national security policy? so he can accomplish all of those things tonight, and also humanize the trump-vance ticket a little more. i think there are a lot of different things they're trying to accomplish this evening. >> vaughn, today it's

. >> i want to bring in joyce vance, a former prosecutor. katy and i are both wondering, what are the legal ramifications here. i think the political ramifications are he would have to step down immediately on conviction. >> well, you know, i think that that's likely. that would be consistent with prior practice. the reality is that some defendants want to push and say there's the prospect of an appeal. they want to make sure all the is are dotted and ts are crossed. the charges are very serious. it covers a number of different incidents. this is what prosecutors would charterize as a pay to play case. someone uses their elected office to make money, telling people if they want anything done to help them, favors, legislatn, insight, that they have to pay for it. it's the worst kind of public corruption federal prosecutors deal with. a very serious series of charges brought here. >> ali vitali is on capitol hill. who else has been calling for him to step down, especially if he is convicted? >> reporter: i imagine those calls are only going to grow

vance. he lived there for five years working as a venture capitalist and biotech executive. joining us now msnbc's katierooney from palo alto. what do we know about j.d. vance's connections with silicon valley? >> so as you said, he was an investor. he spent five years here in silicon valley. he invested in tech companies alongside some of the big names who are also gop donors. he has close ties to peter thiel. if you've heard paypal mafia, there's a group of tech executives who have gone on to do other things, build other tech companies. elon musk is in that group. you've got names like david sachs. they have helped raise the profile of j.d. vance among the tech community here that started to shift a bit to the right. this is historically a liberal bastian in terms of donations and where they tend to give their support. that tends to be -- it's shifting now, you're seeing that reflected with elon musk, for example, supporting and endorsing former president trump. you've got some of the big tech names that also have ties to vance. that really goes back to his days as an investor. >> and kate, so what be

vance that hated donald trump just five years ago, by the way. but you look at even today, katienator, tweeted something about how kamala harris should condemn the opening ceremony of the olympics in france. it's just this constant stoking of outrage and anger that because the currency and maga today and that's what you see with j.d. vance? >> well, and jason osborne, i mean, it's one thing when you're saying something on fox news, its 2021, he is running for the senate. but that is the reality of when you are then later they vice presidential nominee for a major party. and i think a lot of people have said, why didn't this come up? when they were, when they were vetting these candidates that you know, knowing, especially with trump's concern about women voters this election knowing what could potentially come down the pipe right well i mean, first off, let me just say i mean, if we're sitting here talking about disparaging comments and the first thing that adam does it sit there and talk about eyeliner on j.d. >> vance? i mean, this is not helping the dialogue as we're moving fo

vance emerging as the pick. x in particular was a place where everyone was quite vocal. now we are hearing more from the kamala harris side. your position, katieaving me. we live in a democracy. and everyone has a right to their own opinion. i think our industry just like our country has a diversity of opinions. i think there are a lot of people like myself who are really enthusiastic and excited about what the kamala harris campaign stands for or hope for optimism, for innovation, and move the country forward. ed: one of the areas of focus with j.d. vance particular is his experience as a venture capitalist, his experience of so call silicon valley and what that might mean for an environment where entrepreneurs want to thrierve. do you -- thrive. do you feel kamala harris has the same attributes she can provide a similar environment if she were to be re-elected? katie: first, she's way better. she's way better. she's from the bay area. she understands technology. she understands innovation. she also understands responsibility. she is somebody that, i think, we are very enthusiastic from the tech industry what she can bring to the future. and

up against donald trump and jd vance afterd all of the testosterone we saw at the rnc last week, what are your thoughts there? >> it's a really interesting prospect. katie, me turn the conversation back around to you. i just said that i think the democrats will now not have a fight over whether or not kamala harris is going to be the nominee. i really see this as -- it was becoming clear that that was what was going to happen if resident biden dropped out now with his endorsement. do you agree that that is done? >> i do. and just by the conversations i've been having on my text messages and the treatments i've seen coming in, i had to have lots of conversations with lawmakers about what should ul come next. there was a lot of talk initially that it should be an open field. they should let kamala harris prove herself in an open field because on the anointment would weaken her, whereas a challenge would strengthen her if she came out on top. there was a reporting that nancy pelosi was saying in private. the second that this was announced, i started getting a flood of go, let. there was also at one point a pro, lead document that was being shared among big
