kcrg t-v nine's katie wiedemann joins us now. katie this isn't the first time dubuque has dealt with a mumps outbreak. certainly not. county health years. but, 10 years ago, the outbreak was much worse than what they're dealing with right now. this is video from the spring of 2006 when the mumps outbreak spread across the state. dubuque was by far the hardest hit county. doctors diagnosed 456 people in dubuque county with mumps. including dozens of students at loras college, who spent time and wearing masks. and all of those cases were diagnosed in the first five months of that year. far fewer people have become sick with mumps this year. still the numbers continue to grow. "i think part of it is just that we're looking for it. a lot more aggressively than maybe some other communities. " heading into the holiday season doctors say keep being vigilant. covering coughs and washing hands are still the best defense in stopping the spread.
