certainly, i'm the same age as katrina.ave got one child, i just -- find it very difficult. >> reporter: people started to lay flowers early on tuesday morning, and kept coming all day. as the floral tributes increased, though, so did the questions. could this brazen siege that ended in such a dramatic and fatal way been prevented. the hostage taker killed when police moved in, was well-known to authorities. he had been convicted of sending hate mail to the families of soldiers who died in afghanistan. there were serious outstanding charges against him too. he was out on bail over allegations he had been an accessory over his ex-wife's murder, and separately over sexual assault. the police described him as disturbed, and while he said the attack was politically motivated, he was careful to avoid that it was islam terrorism. >> he was consistently weird. i don't think anyone would want to imlate that. >> reporter: part of the place remained closed on tuesday, a crime scene. but a bigger part was an ever-growing memorial. peo

katrina dawson was a mother of three. terribly sad. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: the end of a nearly 17-hour siege that left a lone gunman and two hostages dead. four other hostages and one police officer in the hospital and the city gripped by fear. [ gunfire ] it all began around 9:45 a.m. monday morning, sydney time. the gunman takes over a cafe with 17 people inside. in minutes, hundreds of police officers, including snipers surround the building. it's in the heart of sydney's bustling business district during one of the busiest weeks of the year. a gunman self-proclaimed muslim cleric born in iran. hostages are seen raising a black flag with arabic writing saying there is no god but god and mohammad is the god of god. just after 4:00 p.m., six and a half hours into the siege, a side door flies open and two men run for safety, followed by another man running out of a different door. 90 minutes later, another hostage, this time, an employee runs into the arms of law enforcement. she's followed immediately by another employ

that was before katrina. but we were called and still get called the murder capital of the world if you will. that is based on the per capita population. in 1994, we had 420 murders on the streets. storefront church where i started out, fortunately i was able to move a little bit beyond that to a church front, but at the storefront level, we were in a neighborhood near a major .ousing development what our church did and our not-for-profit, we did a protest on city hall. it was peaceful. for jobs. communityn with leaders, with the chief of police, with other elected officials and faith leaders and community leaders, and we were able to throw the police department and the whole city government, bring a police substation right in the neighborhood to begin to build trust between police, between community leaders, between everyday citizens. so my point is that we have engaged the community at the grassroots level to connect to the police department. it is not an easy task but it is one worth doing. on the protests

it will be ten years next year since katrina, and i was in new orleans a couple of weeks ago, and they used their recovery to revitalize in the most profound and really elegant way. they took over all their public schools and the school children's performance now is truly extraordinary. they completely diversified their economy. diversity is such an important component of resilience because it gives you strength. >> ifill: when you talk about diversity, you have a different definition that would leap to mind when they talk about diversity. >> it is both, actually. one of the elements of resiliency is diversity and typically we think about that as redundancy and redundancy is critical. i'll give you another example from the book and that is many people will remember the debacle of lula lemons' yoga pants in 2011 when they were so unbelievably sheer. they lost $2 billion of market caps and had many, many lawsuits and lost consumer confidence. what was wrong is they were relying on a single manufacturer for a single source of that fabric from a single kind of fiber. so redundancy in that

you want to blame hurricane katrina on what now? they took it off the event. a letter with another american association guy who blames 9/11 on homosexuality. maybe they think that will go better in louisiana than blaming the hurricane on the existence of gay people, they'll blame 9/11 on the existence of gay people. maybe 9/11 is further away? since the event at louisiana state university was announced, student groups at lsu have organized protests against him. the faculty senate say they want new restrictions on what campus facilities can be used for in the future. so maybe this won't happen again. but a long as events with the american family association are how republican candidates have to start their runs for president. events like this are going to keep happening somewhere. they're good for something, aparentally. joining us now is professional kevin cope, the chair of the lsu systems council. thanks for being with us. appreciate your time. >> thank you very much. i'll try to warm up after all of those chilling excerpts. >> i feel like we keep this sort
