katy beck has those details. >> reporter: it seems like this, violence, chaos and bloodshed at a pro trump rally 10 days ago that uc-berkeley says made them cancel a speech this week by conservative fire brand ann coulter. the university forced to sacrifice its reputation as the cradle of the free speech movement for safety according to officials. coulter insisted she would go regardless until she lost the sip port of the conservative groups who invited her. it's sickening she said when a radical thuggish institution like berkley can snuff out the cherished american right to free speech. groups from the far left and right have clashed in the city several times in recent months. in february, berkley canceled the speech of alt right milo yiannopoulos when violent protests broke out. in a statement defending the cancellations berkley's chancellor said this is a university, not a battlefield. for civil rights advocates the scenario raises concern. >> it's very important that the government not buckle down and not allow people to silence speakers of any point of view. >> reporter: the can

katie beck is live in portland, oregon where the protest is just getting warmed up. for those just joining us, when you and i were talking about an hour, hour and a half ago, there was nobody behind you. but now that we hit the 1:00 hour, certainly the energy is greater. >> reporter: that's right. the crowd has come out and the spl pl splaz plaza is full. several hundred have arrived. and a lot of folks demanding accountability. as you've seen in protests across the country, demanding that president trump release his tax returns and be accountable for what is in them. one man from portland that we will speak to, mike higgins, your main concern is really about con on fliflicts of inter. >> i think that we need to see donald trump's taxes. there is so much coming out about the russia connection and i believe that after he went bankrupt as a business person he had to go to russia for his resources. so i really think that if we see his taxes, we will see he of loaned money coming from russia to him. >> reporter: do you suspect the large movement across the country will r

also, katie beck is on the ground.here, at least at this moment. >> at this moment but not for long. this is about two hours before the rally gets started. people in downtown portland are just starting to gather and show up with signs and instruments they are going to have a march. it's going to leave this plaza and take about a mile route around downtown portland, the same exact route as the women's march. these folks demanding what so many people are asking for. accountability, transparency and for the president to release his tax returns. now, joining me is an organizer of today's event in portland. why is this important to portland? >> i think it's important to portland because it's important to all americans. we, like you said, demand accountability and trust in our leaders. this is something that the president has said over and over that he would do when he was campaigning. now he's the president and he said he's not going to do it. so we expect that he live up to his word and release his returns. >> in january,

katie beck is there. tell us about the turnout, what you're seeing and what the protesters are saying to you. >> reporter: well, the turnout is just about to happen here. it's an hour before the rally starts. people are gathering here in the plaza and downtown portland. they are going to take a mile walk around the downtown area, the same route that they took for the women's march. people are trickling in, many with signs that say tell us who you work for and show us your taxes. two of the marchers are carl and mary. you say you took an interest after the campaign. >> the statement that infuriated me the most probably in the campaign is when he said i'm smart, i don't pay taxes. and i've paid taxes for 50 years so i thought that was terrible for a presidential candidate. i want to see his taxes. >> do you think this message is resonating all the way to washington? there are 150 or so different rallies today. what do you think this is accomplishing? >> i don't know if he'll pay attention but i want a lot o

nbc's katie beck is live in portland, oregon, where the protest just got under way a short time ago. what is the latest? what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, the protesters gathered here on the plaza and then headed on their routes. they are going about a mile from the plaza and then circling back. several hundred protesters today. the mood was very positive, the energy very good here. no violent interactions, no clashes, no police. they left about 15 minutes ago and expect we'll take the same route they took for the women's march in january. what we've been hearing from people today is a message of accountability. it's tax day, taxes are on the mind. donald trump's tax returns are at the top of people's mind here in portland, many people, saying that they feel that the president owes it to them to disclose all of these financials to show his ties, to explain what he hasn't yet, which is what's in those taxes. so we've been hearing from people all day long. most of them acknowledge these marches happening across the country may not result in the president releasing his tax returns

katie beck is in los angeles with more on that.a dog owner myself, it's easy to feel hopeful about this. it's a medication approved by the fda for people. and now, it's being tested on dogs to see if it can improve their health and dramatically extend their lives. >> good dog. >> reporter: this is family time for tom klein and helen kite. married without kids, they say 11-year-old golden retriever rena is their baby. and good moments matter more now in her golden years. >> the hardest part about having a pet. having a dog, is saying good-bye at the end. they hope a new drug will delay that. >> it would be a good time to see if we could extend her life. >> reporter: rena is one of two dozen older dogs in the dog aging project, a new study looking at rapamycin, an immuno depre depressant for people after organ transplants. i know it's early and you're being cautious. are you tremendously excited about this possibility? >> it's hard not to be excited. >> reporter: matt is the study's co-director. he says research already shows rapamyc
