let's go to katy tur who made her way up there. as i understand it there are 15 blocks that are virtually frozen. people have been told to shelter in place and once they go out, avoid crowds which is tricky on this day which is a holiday every year. >> reporter: it's pretty tricky in this area, brian. this is the back bay of boston. it is a popular area. it is a busy area on a normal day. it is chaotic here during the marathon in a good way. it's celebratory. the bars are open. people are out. right now there are people here. they want to see what's going on. i guess they are trying not to congregate. for the most part it's quiet for this area. after the explosion there were streams of people walking the streets. the subways were shut down and because of that, people had to walk for miles in some cases to their destination. in fact, we are two blocks from the finish line. two blocks from where the explosions happened. we saw a woman right over here, witnesses saw her stumbling to this block with shrapnel wounds. nbc has confirmed s

katy tur, part of our team here as well, she's been looking into the victims all day. katy, good evening. >> brian, they were standing on the sidelines cheering on loved ones, friends and even strangers. then all of a sudden chaos. tonight we're learning more about the trauma of those first few moments including the victims. and an 8-year-old boy excited to see a marathon. >> reporter: today neighbors remembered 8-year-old martin richard, the youngest of the victims. >> to know that that little boy will never come home again is -- it kept me up tonight, and it will probably keep me up this morning. >> reporter: martin was in the crowd watching the marathon with his parents, 11-year-old brother and 5-year-old sister close to where the blast went off. he was killed. his mom and sister right now are in very bad shape. in a statement, his father, bill richard, wrote, "my dear son martin has died from injuries sustained in the attack on boston. my wife and daughter are both recovering from serious injuries. we thank our family and friends, those we know and those we have nev

nbc's katy tur is standing by live in watertown. katy, thanks for joining us.ive us a sense, i'm going up to boston this weekend to visit my son up there. and i'm just wondering, how locked down -- it looks like a ghost town behind you there. >> reporter: oh, it depends on what's happening into tonight and tomorrow. if they still haven't found this guy, you could see the city in much of the same lockdown you're seeing today. it would be surprising for it to go on for two days. it would be hard for people to sit inside their house for this long of a period. people here in watertown have been in their houses since last night. if they have tried to leave, the cops have seen them leave, they've been ordered to go back inside. of course, that's not completely enforceable. there are not enough police officers to do that. people are actually heeding that warning. it speaks to the nervousness around this area. it speaks to the respect they have for law enforcement. for them to do their jobs. as you said, chris, though, there's about a 5:30 press conference that we're h

we will turn back to katy tur in boston in front of the courthouse. what can you tell us sh. >> pete williams just concurred there was a become threat within the building. so the spectators, the looky-loos are asked to leave. they are asking all of us to evacuate now. that's why you are seeing some of this movement and everyone will start moving in a few minutes. my producer, alex, spoke to someone inside the building. they were asked to leave, it was pretty calm. what we do know is that the boston fire department is on scene right now. there are two fire trucks and you do see a lot of fire department official is going around and trying to move people. so what we do know is there was a threat unconfirmed if it was -- if anything is inside or just someone calling in a threat when they saw everybody here on the news. that of course is still left to be known. but we are getting moved, and i think we have to break away right now. >> katy, is it common to see these kinds of threats in fluid rapidly developing situations like this in. >> you know, unfortuna

katy tur. sorry. what's new? we've got over 100 injured people. we've got people at every hospital up there. bringham, williams, massachusetts hospital, tuft israel. it seems that the whole city has become a hospital for this horror at the boston marathon. >> reporter: certainly the whole city is on alert. 100 people injured at least. you have two people dead. we've learned in the last hour that one of those dead people is an 8-year-old boy. one law enforcement official or source has told us that which was just a huge tragedy. you have people walking around these streets here in a state of shock and displbelief and looki for some answers. there's so few answers so far. the homeland security chairman is officially calling this terrorism t terrorism. the white house may not be causing it terrorism but he is. he says it was not an accident. it was intended to harm and scare. it's done just that. dozens injured and two people dead. it was timed at the height of the race around the four-hour mark when most of the racers would be finishing that race. we

and we're joined now by nbc's katie tur who's in watertown, massachusetts, where authorities have been searching for the suspect. and it's beginning, i guess, to close in. the day is beginning to come toward an end. >> reporter: well, certainly the weather is changing, martin. it's been a cloudy and windy day, sunny at times. relatively mild, though. now the weather is starting to change. we have been here for many, many hours. the authorities have been here for well on 15 hours. and saw the sun rise this morning and it looks like they might be here to see the sun set. they probably will be here to see the sun set. they've been knocking on doors all day long. at 12:30 when the last news conference happened, they said they were well over 6 60% to 70 done combing this town. they still had not found anybody. we heard intermittent reports all day long of maybe there was a standoff somewhere within watertown. that, of course, has not been confirmed. we haven't heard anything in the last several hours. we've seen activity certainly. cop cars, military vehicles, military aircraft, police heli

. >> katy tur, thank you very much. dr.n painter was waiting for his wife, teresa, to cross the finish line when the explosions occurred. he tended to the injured when teresa and the others were turned around. good morning, nice to see you. doctor, you're an emergency room physician operating out of florida, this is your 15th marathon. you two were separated but you were waiting for teresa to cross the finish line and from what i understand, you were right in the middle of both of these blasts. they were at 671 boylston and 690. you were standing right in the middle. >> i was about 20 to 30 feet from the first blast. >> and how closely were you surrounded by other people and what was the impact like? >> well, i was surrounded by a lot of people as we're all trying to watch the runners cross the finish line. the people to my left took the blow and the blast, most of them dropped. the people behind me actually did, too, and i was standing there without a scratch. >> you mentioned it was like dominos that the impact hit the fi

joining us tonight from boston, msnbc's katy tur. can you tell me the latest in boston in terms of where people are, what has been closed off and what the state of the city is now hours after the attack? >> reporter: it's very eerie here in boston. we're in the back bay, two blocks from the finish line, two blocks from where those explosions happened. the police commissioner of the city has asked that everybody stay inside, go back to their hotel rooms for their own safety. there was a 15-block radius around here where you cannot get in with car traffic. if you are coming into this area, have you to walk. it's pretty eerie around here. you're not seeing very many people out here. you're seeing a lot of law enforcement, the national guard. we've heard the navy is assisting the investigation. the back bay, if you've been to boston, is usually a very popular area, a very busy area, especially after the marathon. these bars are going crazy usually after the marathon with people celebrating. right now everything is shut down. everyone aro

nbc's katy tur has been live with us from boston throughout the week. katy, catch us up to speed. tell us how it all went down last night. >> reporter: well, it all went down thursday night starting around 10:30. that was an m.i.t. police officer, sean collier, as you just said, who was shot and killed in his police cruiser. then there was reports of a carjacking in cambridge. they found their suspects in watertown. the police gave pursuit, found them in watertown and engaged in a shootout. that happened around 12:30, 1:00 a.m. friday morning. during that shootout, as you said, the suspect number one, the older brother, was shot and then later died at the hospital. the younger brother, suspect number two, the guy that they caught last night, then fled the scene. they were looking for him for almost the entire day. watertown went into a complete lockdown for about 17 hours. at 6:00 last night, the police held a press conference and said, listen, we're going to lift the lockdown. we're still looking for our guy, but you are safe to come out of your homes. people started to trickle o

with us now from watertown, massachusetts, nbc correspondent katy tur. right around the corner from where that shooting took place. the one we just showed you on video. katy? >> i can't tell you how weird it is, mika, to be out here and not see anybody but the media. i have been covering news for quite a while, mostly in new york city. you have seen scenes like this, hostage situations, man hnts and you're always getting people from the community coming and ask you what's going on and wanting updates. the streets are empty. just look down the street right here. you're not seeing anybody moving. 8:30 or so in the morning on a friday, people would usually be going to work and outside their house and it's not too cold out here right now, a mildly pleasant day for boston in april and it's just so odd to see this, this area completely empty. i can only imagine what boston proper must look like right now. give you an idea where we are. just up the street and around the corner is where that shootout took place early, early this morning. it's when they cornered

nbc's katy tur is with us from copley square in boston. 186 people initially went to the hospital, katy>> reporter: there are 54 patients still in the hospital. we believe 7 of them are still in critical condition. of course, this city is very relieved to find out that the suspected terrorist has been caught, one of them killed. the other one has been caught, but there's a lot of remembrance and there's a lot of mourning thing and there's a lot of thanks being given to the people who sacrificed their lives in order to get this point. one of them is sean collier, the m.i.t. officer who was shot late thursday. 26-year-old fatally shot. this is what started the chase. his family and his friends are right now remembering him, saying that the only fault that he had was that he was just too brave. there's always an nbta transit officer, richard donohue, he was injured in the gun battle early friday morning in the gun battle in watertown and there are the victims, 8-year-old martin richard, 29-year-old krystle campbell and lu lingzi, they are being remembered, a lot of sadness still surroundin

joining me live in watertown, katy tur, describe the scene that you're witnessing right now. >> it has got an lot more act aive here in the past few minutes. a police helicopter that is circling this area for the last 20 minutes or so. they are circling the area which is right over here, diagonal from where i am. we did see police cruisers speed that way and arm aered vehicles speed that way and we are hearing reports of some activity. we have reporters that are closer to the scene and they are saying that it does appear a bomb squad is going into a house. it's much more active than it was a few minutes ago. to give you an idea of where we are in relation to how everything has been happening. the shootout that happened early this morning happened in this general vicinity happened a couple blocks from here. that's where the suspect was killed and the second suspect fled. they have been searching this area for a number of hours. seven plus hours going door-to-door, knocking on doors and trying to figure out where the suspect might be. they're asking everyone in this area to stay inside,
