we get the latest tonight from katy tur. >> reporter: 14-year-old avonte was last seen on surveillance video running away from his new york city school last friday. now seven days with no sign of the nonverbal boy with autism. his dad daniel. >> i try not to think of the worst. i still have the support of everybody. >> reporter: today as they have done every day the boy's worn out family combed the streets with the help of volunteers. police turned over manhole covers and swept the east river. everyone hoping the rescue doesn't turn into a recovery. >> we need leads throughout the day. we try to take them serious, call the police, call detectives. >> reporter: now the family's search has gone national. the group autism speaks is offering a $70,000 re ward for his safe return. the group's vice president warns of the extra challenges when children with autism go missing. >> he may not understand what they are saying. could you just imagine how he must be feeling and the anxiety? he may not be able to understand them or he may not be able to communicate back what his needs are. >> reporte

. >> nbc's katy tur went to survey the damage in sea bright, new jersey and is back there today and joins me now. katy, i know so many people are not back in their homes, there's a lot of frustration but what is your report card? >> reporter: well, 70% of this town is back in their homes according to the mayor here. unfortunately the mayor isn't one of them. her home is completely gutted. she's fighting with insurance. a lot of people we've spoken to are having a lot of problems with their insurance company. they are having problems trying to figure out how to get grant money. they have applied, haven't gotten back, they have been denied and don't understand why they have been denied. we came a couple days after the storm. this town was completely shut off for a while because gas lines were open and it was covered in sand. one of the first tv crews to get out here and show images from here. right here is where a men's clothing store was. it was hanging by a thread, about to collapse in on itself. it was condemned like a number of buildings in this town, torn down. unfortunately nothing ha

katy tur in sea bright, new jersey. what does it look like there a year later?it certainly doesn't look great. it looks better. i've been covering these areas for the past year. we came to sea bright a couple days after the storm. it was one of the worst areas out there. this was a men's clothing store. it was completely condemned. had to be torn down like a lot of buildings. the waterline is behind me. you can see it on this green building. it was 8 feet high in sea bright, three blocks wide. ocean is here, the river is here and the water came crashing in like a thunderclap in on this town. all of the businesses were destroyed here. now the mayor says 70% of the people and homes are back. 400 families are still displaced. you're seeing that a lot up and down the jersey shore and new york. people displaced from their homes, trying to figure out a way to either tear down their homes still standing, gutted the way they were after the storm or rebuilding empty lots. unfortunately it's scattered. the progress in some areas is great. in other areas could be right nex

. >> katy tur has more on what police are looking about her background. some of the information she had stopped taking her medication. what can you tell me about that? >> reporter: we did learn that from law enforcement sources who say family members told them that. we're getting a clearer picture as to what her mental state was before this happened. we talked to a lot of neighbors and they say by all accounts she seemed like a normal person, nobody here seemed to really know her just off exchanges going in and oust buildings. but family members have been speaking to law enforcement officials and they are painting a much clearer pictures. she was on psychosis medication and recently off and also post partum medication. she fell a couple of years ago a month before her pregnancy and after that increasingly was acting erratic. she would be holding her infant and wondering around unsure of where she was at. her former employer, dr. barry wise said she was increase will go i stressed out and the pregnancy was unplanned. as for 1-year-old girl, she's in child

nbc's katy tur has been following this story and joins me now.ll over social media showing this picture, believing or at least hoping. authorities say they've talked to this boy. >> unfortunately, they really did think it was him. it looks so much like him. even avonte's father said he couldn't tell whether or not it was him. but he was wearing different clothes. there was some concern, some talk, why would he be in different clothes? he looked well fed. but there's a lot of hope out there. the cops have been looking. volunteers have been looking. every subway station you're seeing not only posters, but they have the announcements looking for this child. last month the police commissioner said he has less hope that he's going to be found alive. that angered the mother, as you could imagine. no mother wants to hear that anybody is deciding to maybe look less for their child. the commissioner said that's not the case. they're looking through surveillance photos. it's certainly a really tough story because the kid has autism. >> our friend holly rob

nbc's katy tur joins me.stories of inspiration and how people put pieces back together. we cannot ignore the fact there are many others who have not been able to put it together as easily. >> reporter: certainly that's right, tamron, a lot of people that have been able to pick it back up and get back together and sort of find normalcy in their lives. but there are people that are still struggling. this is where a business once stood. we were here in the days after the storm hit when this town was just completely demolished. i say it's only a half mile wide. to give you a better idea, the ocean is three blocks away is the sh rues bury river. the storm came in like a thunder clap and demolished this town and sent everything into a spin cycle. this was the interior wall of a men's clothing shop. the sockets are still intact. they have not been able to rebuild this business. the one next door is also completely boarded up. there is some good news out here though, some businesses have been able to rebuild. the har
