we're joining by nbc's katy tur who has been covering the trump campaign for us. you. >> it's nice to be here. >> the meet, has been in the works for some time. >> it's actually at trump's government course in new jersey. we're not sure if they've met yet so far. we currently have a producer out there staking it out to see when governor pence will get there, but so far we've only seen black suvs go in. no actual sighting of governor pence quite yet. this meeting has been in the works for at least a few days, according to sources telling nbc news. as of thursday, governor mike pence was saying i he had no indication he would be considered for vp. then suddenly on friday he was flying out to see donald trump here in the tristate area to talk to him. governor pence is potentially quite a good option for trump. he has a lot of legislative experience. he is a kboemgovernor. he can bring that to the table. he has experience in washington as a representative out there. so he has that in his favor, but he's not necessarily the type of personality that donald trump normally

let's jump over to new york city where katy tur is. as we mentioned, she just had an interview with donald trump jr. tell us what he told you. >> the head line from that interview was that it is down to three. sorry, there's a fire truck going by. it's new york city. so donald trump jr. tells me the decision is down to three officially. it will be either newt gingrich, pence, or chris christie. there's no other surprise name that is being put out there and that donald trump will make a decision today. we're e getting close to the witching hour. there should be a decision this it afternoon. any reports otherwise that a decision has been made are at this point unfounded. i asked donald trump jr. what it was like vetting these three candidates. he explained in pretty good detail to me just what it was like behind the scenes. take a listen. >> we actually have great choices. they are very different. but they are all great people and incredibly intelligent. it's kpoiting. >> what questions are you asking? >> you have to ask tough questions.

katy tur has followed this entire campaign, headquartered as it has been in the confines of trump tower in mid town manhattan. katy? >> so i got a star at my feet, a plaque for this position after all these months. the trump campaign is feeling pretty good right now, at least a little bit, in terms of what they see their future as, they're happy. donald trump is now going to be the nominee for the republican party. don jr got to put him over with the number of delegates, adding new york's delegates to the tally. they feel really strongly about that. they feel strongly about donald trump jr's speech tonight. they feel strongly about eric's speech tomorrow, about tiffany's speech, chris christie as well, if they do ever get under way. but there is this cloud over the campaign and that cloud is what happened with melania trump. i just got off the phone with a source inside the campaign, who expressed extreme frustration, that melania was let down, hung out to dry. there was a feeling they wanted her to come out and do her best and be set up in a way that she could do her best. i'm told a n

. >> and katy tur was in the room, in the ball room at the new york hilton. katy, was there anything different about today, having covered countless trump events on the road like it? >> certainly ditch. this was a room not filled with donald trump supporters from rallies, but rather a number of gop -- new york gopers, friends and families. and then just tourists who came in literally from off the street, brian. they heard about it and they asked if they could get in. secret service swept them and they sat down, a little bit gob smacked that they were able to get in so easily and an event that didn't have more inveetes here. that being said, it was typical in the way donald trump spent a good portion of the time talking about, frankly, himself, relitigating the primaries, talking about all the deals he's made. also, perpetuating this idea that he was against the iraq war when he was not. he spent 29 minutes before he got to governor mike pence. he said part of 9 reason why he chose him is because he needed party unity, that he's an outsider and he needed somebo

. >> nbc's katy tur joining us now with the latest reaction. katy, what is the trump campaign saying this afternoon? >> they're not saying anything this afternoon. so far what they're relying on is donald trump's own tweets as often how he responds to various controversies. you alluded to it a moment ago in your intro, but let's read the tweets. i was viciously attacked by mr. khan at the democratic convention. am i not allowed to respond? hillary voted for the iraq war, not me. there's no evidence to support he voted for the iraq war, he also went onto say captain khan killed 12 years ago was a hero, but this is about radical islamic terror and the weakness of our leaders to eradicate it. that's what the campaign and candidate are trying to do. they're trying to pivot this to focus more on radical islamic terrorist saying that's the problem, not necessarily the idea mr. khan is putting forth which is muslims in this country. the issue surrounding as donald trump repeatedly has said he would like to ban all muslims from coming to this country an

katy tur, thank you. checking back with you throughout the day.n ohio, start of the convention in two days. nbc's hallie jackson nearby, east 4th street. hallie, one of the things leading up to the queconvention how will it be different and the tensions between the donald trump wing of the party. walk us through what you think the pence pick does for unity? >> reporter: listen, i think the pence pick is explicitly intended to try to calm waters in the gop, have them say to conservative grassroots movement, listen, we've got your pack. we're picking pence, calm and steady. he's got conservative credentials. seeing this from messaging putting out, we know donald trump is instructing surrogates, rnc instructing sur gas to talk about he's had ultraconservative guy, job creator, pointing to indiana. that is a goal of what they are hoping to do. the question is, is that going to work among people gathering in cleveland republican national convention that starts monday. just hearing conversations from delegates that have already arrived, people are fine

katy tur was at the rally. tell us what donald trump's message was in the wake of dallas. >> also make america great again, a reaganism, steve. he is co-opting a number of old republican slogans. in terms of this rally, what donald trump was trying to do, it was come out as somebody a little more disciplined. he was reading from teleprompters, he addressed the dallas ambush. he also addressed philando castile and alton sterling in that speech. but the majority of it was aimed at talking about veterans. and also attacking hillary clinton saying that veterans in this country haven't gotten a fair shake. they haven't been taken care of in the last ten years. talking about the long lines waiting for care. and he was trying to position himself as the person who is going to be watching out for the little guy. the people who fought in wars for this country and have come back to poor care in veterans administrations. the efforts were to show himself as the strong leader in that regard and hillary clinton as more of the

let's go over to katy tur. she was there a few minutes ago with thomas robert. donald trump returning to cleveland and mike pence was there to greet him. and do we know where they are now? >> we do not know where they are right now. donald trump says as he left now let's get to work. presumably both men are working on their speeches. we know that as we have been talking about governor pence will be speaking tonight. but it's an understatement to say he didn't come in with a flourish. he circled around the landing area twice in his helicopter. he did a fly by with his plane. going right by the welcome area. and going right behind a ted cruz rally as he was speaking. notably, melania was not with him when he got off that helicopter. it's unclear if she is in cleveland at all or if she was on the plane, but the rest of the donald trump family was there. ivanka, don jr., eric, their spouses, tiffany as well. and a number of the core staff for donald trump's campaign. and as the campaign admits that her speech was plagiarized. a staff member, the trump corporation co

katy tur at trump tower following what will be the trump/pence ticket.understand you just talked to paul manafort, one of trump's top aides there. what is he telling you? >> all this source information that donald trump was making decisions at the very last minute trying to change his mind up until midnight last night. paul manafort came outside and officially tried to tamp down on those rumors. tamp down the idea that there was drama behind the scenes of this pick. telling me that he and governor pence -- that donald trump and governor pence get along quite well. they're excited to move forward and this was the plan all along. out of respect for the victims of the terror attack in france, that's the reason it was officially delayed. no other reason. not because of doubt. take a listen to how paul manafort tried to push back on those rumors. >> the only cause yesterday were rescheduling things that were scheduled. >> when did he decide to governor pence? >> that's for him to say but in the last couple of days. >> when governor pence got on a plane and ca

. >> katie tur, chris jansing, now on the phone, she's out at the airport where donald trump is goingoing to have a welcoming ceremony with his running mate, mike pence. katie, you've been covering this man, how concerned must he be about 48 hours devoted to a moment with melania trump on that stage that should have been an unparalleled success? >> well look, for 48 hours for them to come up with a reason why this happened. and to explain it and i think that's, an indication that the campaign and not think this was a big deal. the fact that they've come out now to explain it, they realize that it was not going away. interestingly though, andrea, the story was starting to die down a little, so when donald trump came out and tweeted that pall press is good press. no matter if it was bad or not. he ignited it once again. that came in quickly followed by that. it is another example in the long list of examples of this campaign not being quick to spend their own negative publicity. and donald trump is a strong believer in not needing the tracking of potential politics. that is with somebod

. >> katie tur is in new york and halle jackson on the convention floor. halle, i understand that you just got off the phone with the trump campaign, what'd they tell you? >> reporter: i'm going to pull my ear piece out here, a lot of discussion if you will, a lot of spin perhaps, pushing back against the idea that melania trump plagiarized part of her speech up here on stage. and give you a sense of where we are, wet just watched rehearsal happening here for the program tonight. it'll be in session in the evening. there'll be the role call as you mentioned, but the trump campaign knows, i think, there'll be a lot of scrutiny on the speeches. you mentioned paul ryan, it'll be the two trump children, donnell jr. and tiffany trump taking the stage who will be addressing the delegates here. i can tell you this, i think don jr., i'm told by senior staffer, will be discussing conservative principles. this is key because part of what we've seen here on the floor with the delegation has been some, including look over here at colorado, let's walk over this way, re

thank you for your reporting, katy tur. governor pence will be back in indiana in two hours. he'll have a welcome home rally. kelly o'donnell is in zionsville. what do you expect from the rally back home? >> reporter: we're here ahead of time, ari. we don't have any crowds here yet. we're at a small private airport where a private plane can land. and the governor and his wife and daughter will get a chance to come back to indiana officially on the republican ticket, and a big change in their lives. of course, governor pence was in the mist of a campaign running for re-election. now he's going to scale that up to being a national campaign. his life will change dramatically. here things are quiet at the moment. we expect that because the governor did so well here in indiana in terms of getting the support behind him when he had that visit with donald trump, that there will be sort of a sense of hoosier prize to be with donald trump and their own governor mike pence. that's going part of it. of course, we think from what our sources are telling us, the governor will probably hav

i want to bring in nbc's katy tur, covering the trump campaign from the start. outside trump tower, where all this began more than a year ago. so katie, what's going on out there in those offices? >> reporter: you know, spoke to somebody intimately involved in the vetting process. they gave me an idea of what they're looking for in terms of a running mate. i'm told it's going to be someone that has legislative experience. that's what they want. but it's also going to be personality-driven. who is going to get along with donald trump. not just for this campaign season, what remains of it, but potentially for the next four to eight years, if he does win, and then win re-election. in terms of who they like, it's going to be whether they want an attack dog or somebody that balances out donald trump more. governor pence being more of the balancing act that the campaign and donald trump himself extraordinarily impressed with the other day, his ability to come on stage and act as the attack dog. they thought he was going to be a little bit more quiet, but he was forcefu
