donald trump is expected to speak in a rally in ohio, wilmington, katy tur, on the ground there. we talked earlier this week that the trump campaign felt that they got a big break of the fbi news a week ago today. they felt their challenge was keeping donald trump disciplined and on message this week leading all way up to tuesday. how have they been doing on that front or he has been doing? >> reporter: he's been doing very well. he has been staying on message and not making major headlines or distracted from his campaign. he's dwelling on things that are not true. he's talking about cameras not showing his crowd. he has captured to this reporting at fox news that hillary clinton will be indicted and having to do with her foundation, that report has been backed off and the reporter has apologized for it and said he should not have reported it. the campaign is still using it and it plays in the narrative that they want to put forward. that's not true. donald trump for the most part has been sticking to his prompters. what we are seeing across the country are polls tightening in ba

nbc's katy tur is in orlando and kasie hunt. our chris jansing is in north carolina and our political reporter in the dc bureau. chris, can we kick it off with you. we know the president has left. the president winging his way to you and all those excited folks that have been in line for hours. the thousands in line to see president obama. you have been talking to the people there, can the president make a difference? >> reporter: they have someone speaking out. this was somebody who says he's going to be out once or twice a month. he's out six days or less or seven. he's speaking to a specific audience here in the state where we have seen, as you can see the size of this crowd. it was really i think unexpectedly huge, they have been going around passing out water. they're down about 16 points with the african-american vote overall. so he's going to try to get people to the polls and get them to get their friends to the polls and having him out here almost everyday in this final frenzy push. it tells youow valuable the campaign

first to you, katy tur. we are seeing a new donald trump, the donald trump that his new management team hoped would stay on message. the last 48 hours he's been behaving himself. >> it's more than the last 48 hours and this is a donald trump we have not seen for the past almost year and a half that he has been campaigning. usually he steps on his own message when he needs to be talking about issues or staying to topics that republicans think will help him gain ground. stuff like the premiums rising in obamacare. those sort of things. he's often gone ahead and said something outrageous or taken the bait from hillary clinton and made negative headlines for himself. since friday afternoon since the revival of the investigation broke, at that point donald trump's campaign is on his heels down in most of the polls. the momentum was not on their side. you can see a palpable change in the attitude of the campaign. the moment this news hit, donald trump came on stage in new hampshire, a few minutes afterwards with a

so i want to discuss all of this with our team right now, katy tur, ari melber. the washington's anne guerin and chris jansing who is traveling with the president in greece. we'll get chris jansing on the phone in just a moment but ann, i want to start with you. striking comments from the president. you were noting he's essentially saying what he couldn't say yesterday in the briefing room when he delivered the press conference. what was your takeaway? >> i thought these were the most thoughtful and most personal and direct comments he's had about the election and about his own role in it or not. nothing he said there was about hillary clinton. it was about why he believes donald trump won, that this was a change election, people wanted to shake things up and this is the thistory of the united states. we go this way, that way, and then come to the middle. that's a fairly common view of what happened if you look at it in a historical context but chris' question was more direct, do you blame yourself in any way and that's the part that he sort of addressed, i mean,

katy tur, nbc news, new york. >> reporter: this is cynthia mcfadden in new york. tonight, nbc news can exclusively report donald trump's transition team has asked that nearly 30 people be granted the nation's highest security clearances. in a secure room inside 1717 pennsylvania avenue, of america's nuclear war plans, the classified details of russia's role in the election, as well as the $80 billion official intelligence budget and the nooks and crannies of american covert operations. four people have already been given access -- rudy giuliani, chris christie, newt gingrich, and mike rogers. the new list is dominated by politicians and washington insiders which will comfort some and may alarm we asked james stavridis, the former commander of nato, about those on the list. >> this is a very eclectic group of folks, many of whom have reasonable national security credentials. collectively they're going to come at it international affairs with bias toward hard power as opposed to soft power. >> reporter: the list includes three members or former members of congress,

covering this trump transition process, and katy tur letting us know that there were two reasons in terms of why reince priebus was chosen and i'll just read what she sent to us. she said, one, he proved his loyalty to trump over the course of the campaign, throughout the campaign over the last year, often traveling with him and introducing him at rallies and that he stuck with him visibly during some tough times even after again that audio that we had heard where the commentary come out that was seen as misogynistic. two, the other reason that katy tur is telling us in terms of why he was chosen, reince priebus, he knows and is liked on capitol hill and potentially seen here as an olive branch to the establishment consistent with what you were saying, hallie, just moments ago in terms of some of the strengths that basically reince priebus can bring to this transition. >> i would say that was clearly a reason for the selection of priebus, obviously, as our reporting reflects. as you look back throughout the primary campaign, throughout sort of the 18 months or so that donald trum

>> katy tur tonight, thank you. as we await the first results of the presidential election, we're getting a look at some early exit poll insight into the mood of the voters and why people are voting. for a closer look at lester. one of the biggest headlines we are seeing so far in our early exit polls has to do with the group we've been talking about this whole campaign. that's college-educated white female voters who went for barack obama in 2008, mitt romney in 2012, and look what's happening now. they are breaking for clinton. according to this early data, by 8%. remember what happened in 2012. it was the flip side that went for romney by 6%. here's some news for donald trump's campaign. check out what's happening with white they are breaking for donald trump by 24%. this is decisive. especially when you compare it to the 2012 numbers. you can see donald trump is out-performing where mitt romney was. he won that group with 20% of the vote. so what does this tell us? it's not necessarily the gender gap that we'll
