katie zachary is live at broad and fisher. we hope that the spectators and fans come out, but if it is too wet for them, they can watch it here on nbc 10. >> that's right. a lot of the preparations are under way right now. you see some of our own preparations right now. we will be broadcasting the race live beginning at 8:00 a.m. and bringing you updates throughout the morning as we have been on the air throughout the morning. a lot of trucks out here helping in some of the areas where runner wills be corralled. some early bird runners like to get out here super early, hop on septa early, and hopefully we'll have a runner live for you coming up in the next half hour. let's look at the map. we're at the start at fisher and broad. so you can see from our map, five miles in takes you to city haul, and then five miles more takes you to the navy yard. you have spectators from all different neighborhoods of philadelphia. and personally, i have run this race several times, and that is one of the most exciting parts about the race is

katie zachary is at broad and fisher, the start of the 10-mile race. >> that's right, people have been training for this for months. joining me now is one of those runners who has been training for awhile, this is your 5th year running? >> yes. >> your 5th year running in a kilt? >> no, my third year running in a kilt. i asked how comfortable can that really be? >> it is extremely comfortable, i'm wearing shorts underneath. so i'm like any other runner out there. >> and today you have extra prosection from the rain, the extra layer, right? >> tell me who you are running for. >> i run for the american cancer society. this year i run for all of those who can't run because they had, have, or lost someone to cancer. i'm running for my wife's grandfather in particular this year after passing away from

katie zachary is down there. >> it is a little different for you this year when you were up at this hour getting ready. now we're covering it. a lot of preparations still going on at this early hour. we're right at the start of the race at broad and fisher. there are a lot of crews still out here putting up signs and marking. a lot of trucks, but in the next hour and a half or so, everything will be cleared out and making way for the thousands of runners that will be in the area. let's go to the map now. some of these runners, let me tell you it is sprinkling out here, the heavy rain has held off and this is really nice. a lot of the runners tell us one of their favorite parts is the crowd participation and they're worried that as the rain makes up the crowd it l not make it out to the race. so it goes from broad to fisher.

katie zachary shows us how students areterring mosquitoes. >> mercer county has been on the lookout forosquitoes carrying the zika virus. for months now, really since the winter. now, local students are being encouraged to get involved in this effort. students from across the country are being asked to work with their local mosquito control teams collect egg samples. we caught up with a team in mercer county doing just that. it's as easy ozputting a cup and paper towel liner near standing water. mosquitoes usually lay their eggs inside. the samples would be sent to the invasive mosquito project. it's born from scientists in the midwest who want to create a map of mosquito activity. >> now, we have this fear from zika and chikungunya, but really, this is an education project for people. >> we want to be proactive because once we have the disease and those invasive mosquitoes. it's already two late. >> the scientists behind this project says in the past when he put forth this kind of plea for help, students have been more responsive with theidaty collection than adults. that's why school
