nbc10's katy zachry is live. hi, katy. >> reporter: hi, vai. through the morning, we've been talking to investigators, they tell me a man died in this fire that broke out at the assisted living facility. i'll tell you how firefighters worked to get an employee to safety. coming up after the break. >>> new from overnight, we're learning more about a fire an an is sifted living facility in delaware county that left one person dead and another injured. nbc10's katy zachry is live near the scene in middletown township, katy. >> reporter: rosemary, the fire chief tells me on the way here they were worried because they learned that it was in a building where people lived at the elwyn institute, a facility that caters to physical and mental disabilities. firefighters were side by side with state police who responded to help staff to safety, many of them older and not able to get out of the building themselves. one man in his 60s or 70s, i'm told, died from injuries he received in the fire. a security guard and another employee suffered minor injuries.

nbc 10's katie zachry is live on the scene. what have police told you, katie? >> reporter: well, police are telling me that this couple and their two sons who live at the end of this block are understandably shaken. they were winding down for the night getting ready for bed when this group of armed men broke into their home. police say the men were all wearing masks that covered their face as well as dark clothing. it happened last night just after -- just around 10:15, rather. the men had handguns and a shotgun when they broke in through a back basement door on the 100 block of lafayette street. the men found the homeowners in the basement. that man and woman were held against their will while the group of armed men ransacked the rest of the house. the couple's two sons were upstairs, also held at gunpoint. the men ran from the house. they have not been found yet and that is what concerns police the most. >> our biggest threat is we have four active on the street, three handguns and a shotgun that we need to find. >> reporter: and i'm trying to get more inform

nbc 10's katy zachry is on scene there monitoring the fire progress. katy, is this thing under control yet? >> reporter: well, chris, around 2:00 this morning, it looked to be under control, but then around 2:30, the flames resurged, and this is what firefighters in atlantic city have been battling for the last six hours. now, as bad as these flames look, it was much worse. as we go to our video, this is around the height of the fire. it broke out just around 10:00 between pennsylvania and north carolina streets on atlantic avenue. firefighters rushed to the scene. we are six hours into them fighting this fire. now, we know from the fire chief that the fire started in a building that houses a sewing shop on the first floor and then apartments above. it's unclear how or why the fire began. flames spread quickly to the surrounding storefronts and apartments, primarily because of the wind, the direction, the chief says, is just blowing this fire to surrounding storefronts and apartments. and he said it's really adding fuel to the fire and really working ag

right now let's head over to katy zachry with more on how to get around this area. katy, this is very busy, so certainly, people who are heading out in this area should be aware. >> yeah, matt, and we've been monitoring it for the last hour or so, ever since it came into our system. again, it's happening in westville, almonessen road at delsea drive, because delsea drive, as you saw, is closed both directions and it's a busy stretch of road. you can take route 45 or gateway boulevard around that crash. also in new jersey, taking a look at your average speeds on some of the majors, 42, 55 and 295, average speeds are in the 50s and 60s at this time, which is pretty typical. route 70 in cherry hill right at h haddenfield road, there is police activity. we're being told two lanes are blocked right now. we're trying to get information as to why. it looks like there's a vehicle out there, but it's not clear why they have two lanes of route 270 at haddenfield blocked off. i'll keep an eye on that. 76 degrees, eastbound at conshohocken, you'll be reduced to one lane around t

katy zachry is watching some traffic trouble on a monday. good morning, katy. >> yeah, i'm smiling, but unfortunately, i don't have the great news to impart to our viewers, bill. good morning. so, this is a live look, 76 eastbound right near conshohocken. you can see all of this backup coming off of 476 as you merge on to 76 eastbound headed into center city, philadelphia. this is because police have reduced it to one lane around. just ahead of here, there's a disabled tractor-trailer on the shoulder, but it has a fuel spill associated with that, so police are trying to get that tractor-trailer out of there, clean up this fuel from the road, so they have traffic just getting by one lane around that. and you can see the backup, and obviously, the drive time, 76 into center city, is accounting for that. but fortunately, 95 at cottman avenue, a typical trouble spot. we are not seeing any delays right there. route 70 at haddonfield road, police activity has recently lifted. there was some tie-ups in the eastbound lane. and then lastly in westvill

nbc 10's katy zachry is live at the scene. actually, a pickup truck police were chasing. still a lot of questions about exactly how this started, right? we don't have the signal but ka katy says this was a traffic stop, the driver fled -- now we have our connection with katy. again, not really clear at this point exactly what led to all of this or have you learned more? >> reporter: there are a number of questions. probably the biggest question is police say they won't know if officer's gunfire killed the driver of this red pickup truck or if he died from injuries he sustained when he hit the telephone pole. around 1:00 this morning, police in palmer township stopped the driver of this red pickup truck. a chase ensued after that traffic stop, came here into easton. the truck crashed in spring garden into a telephone pole. police fired shots around when the truck crashed. the driver was killed. investigators tell me it's too preliminary to say if bullets killed the driver or if he died from crashing into that telephone pole. state police are the ones taking over the investi

nbc10's katy zachry is live this morning. katy, you're live outside the scene. what other things have you learned? we know that the investigation into this is really just getting started, right? >> reporter: well, chris, after talking to first responders, i found out it was a scary time. it's an assisted living home for people with disabilities. firefighters and state police, along with the staff at elwyn worked together to get 40 people to safety. one person living here did die in the fire. firefighters say the flames started in a room. though they won't say if the person living in that room was the one who died. >> the workers here, edge everyone did a great job. they were all here, they were assisting as many people that needed help getting out. >> reporter: a security guard here at elwyn and another employee were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. more for observation, i'm told. people living at smith hall is where the fire broke out. unfortunately, the fire damaged too much of smith hall. they can't live there. they're moved to another part of ca

katy zachry joins us live to explain what this organization does. it's actually pretty impressive. tell us more. >> reporter: it is. this partnership with jose garces is really a partnership to pull people out of poverty. it's one the bucks county opportunity council has done for the last several decades and it's what jose garces strives to do with his own charitable foundation. he'll host 150 people on saturday at his farm. he'll prepare a special meal to thank supporters of the bucks county opportunity council. it has helped nearly half a million low income families pulling many of them out of poverty. the group offers personal coaches for education and job performance and helps with housing, transportation and nutrition. terry shea is one of those people. >> i don't know how i'm going to do this. i'm going to do this. and it was amazing. >> reporter: the woman you just heard from will speak alongside jose garces at the event on saturday. it's interesting to note that every dollar that is invested in the bucks county opportunity council saves bucks county $4 in welfare subsidies.

nbc 10's katy zachry is live in frankford to look at that part of the story this morning. katy? >> reporter: hi, tracy. here's a situation many students can identify with. they live in the northeast, but they go to school in south philadelphia, and they rely on buses, trolleys and subways to get them there. now, if those transportation methods are out of service, they won't have a way to get to school. so, the district says for those students, if they're late, it is excused. if they cannot get to school during the strike, they'll have a packet of school work sent home. the district is stricter with staff, though. they are expected to be at work on time, which means teachers who take the bus will have to drive or carpool in the event of a strike. the district is also working with police and the philadelphia parking authority to relax parking rules around some schools. what can we expect to see with regards to staff, cars and bicycles, and where would they park those things? >> depending on the school. there will be some schools where there's no parking. therefore, they will have

we'll go through it neighborhood by neighborhood when i come back, but first, katy zachry is watching traffic. good morning, katy. >> hi, bill. unfortunately, for new jersey drivers, we have a development to that crash on the turnpike southbound. so, between two exits, exit 4 and exit 2, they are blocked off while crews investigate this overturned truck that's blocking all lanes. it happened just before 4:00 a.m. right near route 322, which is exit 2. but right now, again, crews have between exit 4 and exit 2 new jersey turnpike southbound off limits to traffic. so, an alternate is you can take route 73 northbound to i-295 southbound. that will get you around that mess. it is affecting drive times, because right now we're not even totaling any drive time from 322 to the delaware memorial bridge, because again, that stretch is off limits to traffic. but the turnpike in pennsylvania, that's moving fine, as is 476. no issues to report there. and taking a look right now at the platt bridge, where traffic is running free and clear in both directions, the ben, the betsy and the walt look go

nbc 10's katy zachry is live in atlantic city this morning. katy, firefighters have been out there throughout the night. what's the situation right now? >> reporter: yeah, vai, we're approaching the eighth hour of firefighting, and at some point a few hours ago, the fire chief tells me they thought they had the fire under control, but about a half hour later, hotspots flared back up. fortunately, the hotspots they're looking at right now have been contained to the attic for the last few hours. and it's a much less hectic scene than it was a few hours ago. some of the fire engines have left and firefighters are just -- they're monitoring the fire, the hotspots right now. they seem to just be watching it and letting whatever's in that attic burn. now, at the height of the fire, you're looking at video, it was a much different scene. this fire started shortly after 10:00. wind has been a major factor throughout this fire, spreading the flames from the onset to homes and businesses nearby. listen to what the fire chief had to say. >> the wind is bl

reporting live in upper darby, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> katy, thank you. ebola screenings at four more u.s. airports, including newark, new jersey, will start tomorrow. customs and health officials will take the temperatures of passengers arriving from three west african countries to see if they have fevers. the screenings started at new york's kennedy international airport on saturday. about 150 people travel daily from or through liberia, sierra leone or guinea to the united states. >>> 6:04. turning to the virus that's believed to have made hundreds of kids across the country sick, cases of enterovirus d-68 are expected to spike, the result of a newly released test from the cdc that will make it easier to diagnose. a 4-year-old from hamilton township, you'll remember, died from the virus last month. in ocean county, at least two communities are stepping up cleaning efforts because of concerns about enterovirus d-68 and ebola. in jackson township, the community's eight playgrounds are now being disinfected several times a week. and at schools in barnegat

nbc10's katy zachry is live. tell us more. >> reporter: the teachers union tell me close to 1,000 people will be out here ahead of the srp meeting cancelling the board's decision to cancel the contract. both sides will be negotiating the contract since january. teachers say they put forth a new offer in july that reflected millions of dollars in health care savings. then in what they called a smooth attack, the board cancelled the contract. that happened at a meeting that few people knew about because it was not advertised on the district website like meetings normally are. so today is the first regularly scheduled school reform commission meeting since the contract was cancelled. hundreds of teacher, students, parents, they're expected to be out there ahead of the meeting and then walk into the meeting. coming up in the next hour, we'll talk more about what teachers, potentially students are losing by not having this teacher contract. reporting live in spring garden, katy zachry, "nbc10 news." >>> meantime schoo

nbc10's katy zachry is there. this is obviously a fluid situation. what are you hearing from first responders? >> reporter: first responders told me when they first drove up, they saw fire from one of the buildings. 40 people live inside. i'm told the people are older with disabilities so getting them quickly to safety was a top concern for first responders. staff had already been helping people out of the building. the fire started inside a room in smith hall on the campus. the initial call came in that someone was trapped in the end. firefighters found one person inside dead. investigators are not giving us at this time any information about the victim. neither are people here at the elwyn institute. a security guard and actually another employee were both taken to local hospitals for what i'm told at most minor injuries. more for observation at this time. now at 5:30 i'll have an update about the other people. the other individuals who are inside the building, smith hall, when the fire broke out. and where they are staying right now. reporting liv

nbc 10's katy zachry is live at philadelphia international to tell us about that. katy? >> reporter: hi, chris. there's a lot going on today with regards to the ebola front. today here at philadelphia international airport, workers are going to be speaking out about health and safety conditions that they feel put them at risk for catching the virus. take a look at your screen. these five airports that we've highlighted, beginning today, passengers traveling from liberia, sierra leone and guinea can only enter the u.s. through these international airports. at these airports, additional steps have been taken to screen for the ebola virus, such as taking passengers' temperatures. additional health and safety measures is something that hundreds of philadelphia airport workers would like to see locally. this afternoon they will gather inside the airport to question the quality of protective gear, for example, latex gloves. they're also asking the airport to raise the standard for subcontractors who employ thousands of workers. now, coming up at 5:00, i'll tell you specificall

nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside upper darby high school with more. katy? >> reporter: hi, tracy. every year, the district attorney in delaware county holds a safe school summit. usually, they talk about things like child abuse and bullying, but of course, this morning the ebola virus is at the very top of that list. now, the goal of this task force is to have a working group that can be called in if the ebola virus or enterovirus d-68 traveled into delaware county. yesterday, county leaders created the ebola and infectious disease task force. they'll be at this morning's summit. they say local emergency responders have the training they need to respond safely to a potential ebola case, but there is more they need to talk about. >> the process of putting this task force together, we are going to identify where the best care could be rendered to the individual and in what setting and at what hospital. >> reporter: and at 6:00 a.m., you'll hear from the county's medical adviser again, where he shares his biggest concern about the ebola virus. reporting live i

reporting live in upper darby, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >>> 4:35 now. now turning to the virus that's believed to have made hundreds of kids across the nation sick. enterovirus d-68. authorities in phoenix, arizona, are trying to determine if the death of a first grader is linked to evd-68. the boy came down with severe respiratory problems over the weekend. he died yesterday. officials ordered classrooms at his school to be disinfected. grief counselors will be at that school later this morning. meantime, a new test could show more confirmed cases of enterovirus d-68. the cdc is now using a faster test to diagnose the virus and speed through a backlog of cases. since august, enterovirus d-68 is believed to have sickened hundreds of kids across the country, including 4-year-old eli waller of hamilton township, mercer county, who died from the virus last month. >>> more intensive cleaning is taking place at several schools in ocean county because of the virus. the custodial crew at barnegat township school is disinfecting all surfaces. the current concer
