nbc10's katy zachry is live for us. kay, you just spoke with the young woman's family. >> reporter: yeah vai, the victim rachel hall 22 years old is still in critical condition. not long ago, i spoke with her father who has been by her bedside ever since she was brought here. here's a picture. the 22-year-old criminal justice major was riding her bike home from the diamond hall yesterday when he was hit by a car yesterday on the intersection of park avenue and diamond street. overnight, police found the sim ver mitsubishi silver galant. police say three teenagers were inside the car when it it hit her. at first, they stopped but them drove off, leaving her unconscious on the street. >> it's unknown whether or not this 22-year-old female is going to survive these injuries. >> it could happen to anybody. the reality of it is scary. >> reporter: and rachel hall's father shared a little bit more about his daughter. she is again, a criminal justice major. she is set to graduate next week. and after graduation she want to be

nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside lower moreland police with more on this story. katy?> reporter: we have learned from the victim's family and friends that they leave behind three sons, all young and either in elementary or middle school. now police say it was their 14-year-old son who found his mother and father dead with lacerations to both bodies. and near where they lay, investigators tell us they found a chainsaw. police say at least one death is a homicide. and they are not looking for any suspects at this time. not looking for any suspects. it happened on county lane in huntington valley. nearby the cathedral opened its doors for an evening prayer vigil. we spoke to a religion teacher who had one of the victim's sons in his classroom when they heard the news. >> i'm very grateful for the sense that the boys have an extended family that are really taking good care of them. that's what i wish most for, is that they have a caring community to support them. >> reporter: and behind me the lower moreland police department is working with the montgomery county district

"nbc 10's" katy zachry got on the scene in bustleton. what can you tell us, katy? >> reporter: we are as close as we can get to the scene. if you were to go a little further down krewstown road sky force 10 is over the scene, you'll see a philadelphia police cruiser that around 5:30 this morning smashed into a guardrail along the 8800 block of krewstown road. that officer has a pretty bad head injury i'm told from people at the scene and an officer who just came to our live truck to give me information, that the officer has a pretty significant bump on his head from his head hitting the windshield upon impact. now this officer was headed to a robbery in progress call in the bustleton section of the city. this stretch krewstown is extremely narrow windy and hilly. he obviously had some speed as he was heading to that call and for some reason he lost control. police are obviously looking into what led to that but his car is the only vehicle involved in this one-vehicle crash. he was taken to areatoresdale hospital where at this time he may be admitted for the injury

katy zachry is live at the police station. katy. >> reporter: police tell us they only have a vague description of the gunman because at the time this happened this face was partially covered by a sweatshirt. but officers say he may be injured, that's because the off duty officer that he approached and held up was armed with a gun. authorities say the officer took out his weapon as soon as the suspect held him up. the officer fired nearly ten shots at the guy. the officer was not injured. he's a five-year veteran of the philadelphia police department. and he had just returned home from work in the 12th district when he decided to go out and walk his dog. >> he was minding his own business. it's a chilly night, there's nothing out here. and it would appear that he was looking for a victim. >> reporter: and overnight involved in the search, police brought in k9s and had the helicopters out to help search. officers will speak for the fact that this crime happened in such close proximity in the same neighborhood as where a man abou

katy zachry it looks like flashlights behind you. not a good sign. >> this is not a good sign on 95 where we are seeing issues at girard northbound and southbound. so skyforce 10 is over the scene of the latest crash. this was at 95 right at girard northbound that involves three vehicles. and you can see as we hear from crews here there's a bunch of debris stemming from the accident into the center lane. as you can see, cars are really trying to get around this on the right-hand side. to my map, there's a lot to show you happening on the roadways. we'll start with a different vantage point from the crash on i-95, this is a live look at the northbound side with traffic approaching the crash. it is really backing up. take a look at the drive times southbound. it's much higher with your drive times near woodhaven and the vine taking you longer on 95 southbound. there's another crash clearing to involve two vehicles. and i've been watching that to look less severe than the one northbound. an accident on woodland avenue and vineland in ph

katy zachry is live at the fire scene.aty certainly levy damage but it could much worse. >> reporter: there's a silver lining to this. one person was inside a woman living inside she woke up to the smoke detector. and she was able to get herself out and call 911. so she is okay. and fortunately, the house is seeing extensive damage from the outside and inside looking in on the first floor where you can see firefighters had to break through several windows. the same situation exists for the second floor. now, not long ago i talked to the deputy chief of the lamonth fire company. heavy flames and smoke broke out, but his firefighters went around the back of the house and started to pour watter into the kitchen area where they think the fire began. now, i asked him because throughout the morning there's been rain and mist. and you would think that would help the firefighting effort but here's what he had to say. >> it doesn't help too much. i mean it depends on the cloud ceiling down with rain and smoke coming down more on to

"nbc 10's" katy zachry is live outside presbyterian hospital in university city. katy, your honor telling us that the officer's friends tell us he was in good spirits this morning. >> reporter: that's what we're hearing, chris from people close to him. the injured officer is daniel kostick where he is at penn presbyterian hospital. his friends and police colleagues tell us he will be okay. he was brought here late last night after he was shot in the arm by a suspect. officer kostick had been on patrol when they approached a van. they were investigating someone inside for possible drug activity. the van took off but later officer cost particular questioned the man on a nearby street. >> they were having a brief discussion. camping world truck ostick was still on his bike. then the man says i don't want to do this and he fires striking him in his right arm. >> reporter: officer kostick returned fire and the officer is being treated and the suspect is being treated at hahnemann hospital. police tell us overnight they arrested a second suspect in the shooting. that sus

katy zachry just gone on the scene. what have you seen and what can you tell us? >> reporter: we pulled as close as we could to the house fire because there's a large hose next to us extending to the scene. and you can looking at the back of the ladder truck, but the ladder is extended to the second floor of this home. this fire broke out along wister drive near thornberry drive. heavy vir was showing when they first arrived. formally, the family who lives inside did get out unharmed. now this neighborhood sits behind the cheltenham mall to give you an idea of the location. peco was here and they turned off power just to the house because of the fire. so fortunately power is not out for other homes along this stretch, they are not affected by the power outage. the fire marshall is on the scene looking into the cause of the fire now. over the next few minutes we'll try to get closer to the scene with a better picture and hopefully i'll be able to ascertain in terms of investigation and cause of the fire what they are looking at right now. reporting live in cheltenh

"nbc 10's" katy zachry is live in florence county. what's happening?porter: imagine, chris, waking up to this. check out the video. a backyard literally sinking. you'll hear from the people living inside this home and we'll show you what's likely causing this dramatic erosion. >>> i'm katy zachry live in florence township where behind me some homeowners are losing part of their backyard to the delaware river. here is the dramatic video. huge chunks of this property have eroded away. what's left is a gaping dangerous drop to the river below. the couple here says their backyard has been eroding for two years but the erosion got worse after this week's heavy rain. in fact the sinking soil unearthed an old county drain pipe that was supposedly sealed years ago but it has been leaking and that is likely the cause of the erosion. now later this morning engineers are expected to come out here assess the erosion. the homeowners fear they'll be told to leave their homes. reporting live in florence township katy zachry, "nbc 10 news" news". >>> and good morning,

reporting live in florence township katy zachry "nbc 10 news." >>> 5:03. we have new information in the murder of a delaware county judge manager. a judge sentences sentenced white and parks to spend 15 to 20 years in prison for third degree murder. they also sentenced them to 7 to 14 years for prior robberies. they helped convict three other people in jason mcclay's murder. jason mcclay was the manager of a rite aid in chester. robbers shot him to death in september of 2013. >>> today a judge in atlanta county will sentence a woman convicted of dismembering her husband. a jury found loretta borrows guilty of stabbing her husband to death in may's landing in 2007. prosecutors say she cut up his body and kept his remains as she moved from house to house. burrows could face life in prison. >>> the woman accused of abandoning her disabled son in the woods is expected to return to philadelphia any day now. nya nyia parler waived her right for extradition. her 21-year-old son was found in cobbs creek park wrapped in a blanket with a bible. he had been there for

nbc 10's katy zachry was at that rally. the cause brought together lawmakers and everyday citizens. >> reporter: it did. it brought together all of those people because it is an issue that affects us all, everyone from the person who drives himself to work to those who take public transportation. behind me, hundreds of transportation workers gathered here at dilworth park over the last few hours. they rallied for federal transportation funding. >> the american infrastructure is crumbling. and as a result we're endangering our public safety we're decreasing our quality of life, we're missing an opportunity to create great middle class jobs. >> reporter: former pennsylvania governor ed rendell kicked things off this morning. he's the co-chair of building america's future. it was created to focus on the nation's need to repair and improve infrastructure. now, one time the united states ranked first in the world's infrastructure. we're now down to 16 spots. the federal funding bill is expiring next month, so transportation work

nbc 10's katy zachry is live at the airport where some workers are demanding better way. but that's not all that they're demanding. ka katy, tell us what else they're looking for. >> reporter: yeah, vai, the protest behind me is under way. in addition to an increase in the hourly wage as you said these workers are asking for paid sick days health benefits. several baggage handlers wheelchair attendants and cleaners are in the group. up to 500 are expected to walk off the job today, demanding these increases. i spoke to one wheelchair attendant in this group who says she earns $5 an hour and she relies on tips to make up the rest. but the people that she assists are usually on fixed incomes, and they don't have money to tip her. here's more from the protesters. >> baggage, wheelchair cabin cleaners, line workers who are all just fed up of being intimidated and harassed instead of the company doing the right thing and gives these workers a living age. >> i make $5.75 an hour. i'm a tipped employee but i don't always receive tips. >> reporter: so for travelers today how will

"nbc 10's" katy zachry took that question to several english teachers. katy joins us live from university city with what those teachers are saying in the classroom. katy. >> reporter: hi, chris. many of us know that students these days are constantly switching back and forth between informal texting and formal writing between schools and exams. for some students it can be tough to make the switch and know when abbreviations and shorthand is appropriate and not. we went to council rock high school where several english teachers met with us. they talked to us about students' writing challenges these days. one teacher tells us her ninth graders tend to slip into text mode when writing formally but older students don't make that mistake as much. >> they said that they often do and that it has affected their writing, the texting, and that they find themselves having to work a little bit harder on formal writing. the 12th graders said they have two mindsets. they have a texting mindset and formal writing mindset. >> reporter: despite the challenges we talked ab

nbc10's katy zachry is live at the police station in west philadelphia. katy what you can tell us? >> reporter: i can tell you this morning the off-duty officer is okay. he was in plain clothes. and he did have a gun on him. he managed to fire shots at the attempted robber. here's video of the scene soon after the shots. police tell us the gunman ran under a parked car and then ran away. police don't know if the suspect was shot or not. in the case he was. they sent an alert to nearby hospitals to be on the lookout for him. the officer held up he's a five-year veteran. he had just gotten off duty from work in the 12th district. before that he was an officer for the upper darby police department. now, at this hour police tell me they are still searching for the suspect. coming up at 6:00 you'll hear why police think that this gunman targeted one of their own. reporting live outside of southwest detectives katy zachry "nbc10 news." >>> it's 5:33 we have new information on the dench of an autistic woman in philadelphia and the caseworker who was in charge of her. police sound christin

nbc10's katy zachry is live outside the police station in west philadelphia. >> reporter: police tell us they only have a vague description of this guy because part of his face was covered by a hooded sweatshirt. there may be a chance that he may be injured. that's because the officer that he held up fired his gun at him. detectives say the officer took out his weapon as soon as they held him up. the offduty officer fired ten shots at him. the officer is uninjured. he's a five-year veteran of the philadelphia police department. and police tell us he had just returned home from the 12th district when he decided to just go out and walk his dog. >> he was minding his own business. it's a chilly night. and it would appear that he was looking for a victim. >> reporter: in addition to having officers and detectives on the street police have also brought in the kay9 to see where the officer dropped his gun. also they searched dark alleyway alleyways of searching the streets. reporting live katy zachry "nbc10 news." >>> a basement fire overnight injured a firefighter and sent a person to the

nbc10's katy zachry is at the hospital where that 22-year-old temple student is trying to recover. she was critically injured when that car plowed over her and kept going. katy is trying to talk to her family to get an idea how she is doing. as soon as katy does we'll get a live report and update. >>> kate and her photojournalist matt took this video when they were on their way and they saw this house fire in hunting park. we have no word what caused it. >> happening today, police are expected to make more arrests on this site on the septa platform in spring garden. police say four warrants were issued yesterday. in the brawl involving high school student. they made one arrest over the weekend. >>> this morning, a former leader of a philadelphia nonprofit is facing an indictment after investigators say she stole $85,000. a grand jury indicted rodnell griffin. officials say she stole the money from the hunting park while he was executive director. according to investigators they spent that money on herself. the group that she works for helped people with housing and financial issues.

"nbc 10's" katy zachry is live this morning with a closer look at the sinking backyard. what a sight there. >> reporter: what a sight, chris. you have to see the video from sky force 10 to see how bad it is. their homes back up to the delaware river. one couple tells us their backyard has been erodeing for two years now. that took a dramatic turn following the heavy rain. from sky force 10 you can see their property is literally sinking. what's left is a dangerous cliff where their backyard used to be. engineers are expected to be out here today to talk about and to tell these homeowners how dangerous it is for them to still be in their house. what could be causing this erosion and what is florence township and what is burlington county doing to help these homeowners? we'll talk about that. you'll hear from the homeowners themselves coming up in the next hour. reporting from florence township katy zachry. >>> why did a pickup truck plow into four children in gloucester county. authorities say this truck swerved and hit the children on chestnut avenue in woodbury heights.

katy zachry has traffic. good morning. >> good morning, bill.ngs are looking good on the roadways other than increased volume which we typically see around the 6:00 hour. this is 95 southbound at girard avenue. you can see your drive times between woodhaven and the vine looking good. moving north of bucks county.

katy zachry is live with the story. katy bring us up to speed. >> reporter: hi, tracy. in addition to the fire marshall being on scene and inside the 63 rd street lounge. this caught on fire an hour ago. the city's licenses and inspections officials are out here as part of this investigation. the battalion chief left not long ago. he left after the fire marshall got on the scene. he told me that atf agents alcohol, tobacco and firearms agents are expected to come out here later this morning or sometime today. that's totally protocol. that's standard when this kind of establishment catches on fire. this fire broke out about an hour and a half ago. primarily contained inside. no one was inside the bar. it was closed at the time. that's good. there were no injuries to anyone in the area or to firefighters. there is an adjacent home and those people were asked to evacuate for a short time. they have since been let back in. at this time there's been no damage to their home but to this bar, very extensive damage i'm told by the battalion chief. right now you have the bar owne

katy zachry is live outside the kimmel center where candidates will take the stage tonight. tell us more about preparations. >> reporter: there are six candidates. there's a large pool of democratic candidates running for mayor. you get to hear from each of them tonight as they are inside the kimmel center spending an hour debating key issues like education and job growth. now those are two of the biggest concerns among voters here in philadelphia according to the president of the city's chamber of commerce. that organization has teamed up with nbc 10 to bring you tonight's debate inside the kimmel center specifically in the pearlman theater. this year it's an open seat election meaning mayor nutter reached his term limit. that allows the six democratic candidates to spend time debating what they will do for philadelphia rather than spending time possibly discrediting the incumbent's record. if they can do that well in front of a live audience, it could be a game-changer. >> if a candidate can captivate an audience, a live televised audience in this type of debate format it

"nbc 10's" katy zachry is live looking at this dramatic dropoff. tell us what is happening. >> reporter: dramatic dropoff is right, tracy. as you saw, their backyards are literally sinking. take a look again at this video from sky force 10. it's really hard to peel your eyes away. the homes back up to the delaware river. located in florence township. one couple tells us their backyard has been erodeing for two years but the erosion took a dramatic turn with the heavy ranges. the sinking unearth a drain pipe that was supposed to have been capped years ago but it was leaking and it's likely the cause of the erosion. >> every day it's taken its toll. believe me it's taken its toll. >> you can imagine on that couple, right? the odells say without a clear cause the county was not taking responsibility but they hope that will change. coming up later this morning, engineers will be out at the home assessing the damage trying to pinpoint the exact cause of their sinking backyard. the odells tell us they're really fearful because of how dangerous it is. ten

nbc10's katy zachry is live. walk us through what happened. >> reporter: chris, i can tell you right now that off-duty officer was okay. he had just returned home from work and still had his gun on him. the suspect is still out there and police tell us that he may have been shot. that's because in addition to searching the streets around the scene, police are now checking nearby hospitals because they think he may have been shot thinking the suspect may have checked in there. this all happened just before midnight when police say the suspect approached the off-duty officer who was in plain clothes walking his dog. detectives say the man pulled his weapon immediately. this just is a mile from where a man was mugged walking his dog late at night. and this morning, officers spoke of the close proximity of the crimes. >> just about aware of your safety. this is the reality of the world we live in today and these are the challenges that police officers face every day. >> reporter: the off-duty officer who was off arou
