nbc 10's katy zachry is live in center city this morning. katy you've been keeping in touch with the health department in philadelphia about the dangers of the heat an how to beat it. tell us more. >> i will in just a second. there's been a marked difference out hear. you can feel the humidity as compared to when i saw you about a half hour ago. it's not as cool. the elements were pretty good up until now. we're starting to feel soupy. leading into today when the city is expecting extreme weather, the health department is in close contact with the narm weather service. the national weather service issued a heat advisory for today between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. we can give you tips on how to minimize the effects of the heat and humidity today. avoid being outside during the heat of the day. don't work or play outside if you can prevent that. wear a hat or something to cover your head. wear light, loose-foot clothing to stay cool. and drink plenty of water. for families and tourists here in philadelphia this is the summertime. there are a lot

. >>> nbc 10's katy zachry is live in the digital operations center. katy, we're hearing from a friend of the alleged shooter, dylann roof. >> that's right, vai. what we're going to share with you, these comments are the newest we're hearing from someone who knows the shooter. they came out overnight. they are brand new. this friend says that dylann roof had some kind of plan. now, investigators say 21-year-old dylann roof on wednesday night went to the prayer service and bible study at the emanuel ame church in charleston. they say he sat with the people inside for about an hour before suddenly standing up and allegedly opening fire. the case is being investigated as a hate crime. roof drove 250 miles to north carolina before he was arrested in a traffic stop. police do believe he acted alone. now, according to a friend of the shooter, roof recently made remarks about race. >> he wanted it to be white with white and black with black. and that he didn't -- he didn't believe in what the black race was doing to the white race. >> reporter: six women and t

let's check in with "first alert" traffic reporter katy zachry. >> hi, we have a lot. i want to start with the new jersey turnpike southbound just south of the exit 7 interchange. you can see skyforce 10 over the scene a few minutes ago. this is video of it. we have an overturned truck that caught fire. there are a number of emergency vehicles. this happened on the inner southbound lane. traffic is still getting by and being divert to the outer lane. you can take 295 around that. i'm seeing no restrictions on 295. moving forward now along 95 southbound heading into center city this is a look at girard avenue, like a parking lot right now. our drive tiles are showing southbound between woodhaven and the vine about 14 minutes. i would guess in the next few minutes that's going to creep up considerably because i have been watching brake lights here for the last five or ten minutes. we have a lot to get to plymouth township and jefferson street hazardous road conditions. crews are still out there. 76 westbound at city avenue there's a disabled vehicle that might slow thing

we begin with nbc 10's katy zachry. katy joins us live at a patco station in haddonfield. any word on what time service will start up again? >> reporter: well after the morning rush. that's what we're hearing, vai. unfortunately we have passengers like this gentleman who have shown up this morning thinking patco service is running as it normally does. but then he realize when he sees the chain on the door that it's not running. it's suspended this morning because of the storms. i'll just launch into how he can get around this disruption. fortunately new jersey transit buss are cross-honoring patco tickets this morning. and this doubles as this gentleman who's waiting for the bus stop here, this haddonfield patco station doubles as a new jersey transit bus depot. the first bus i'm told picks up around 6:30. we are seeing many more typical patco riders showing up not realizing that service is suspended. i'm sure you've driven in the heart of rush hour from haddonfield to philly. what's that like? >> it's horrible. when you get on 42 to go over the ben franklin bridge it's ab

right now katy zachry is monitoring the developments all morning and live in our digit operations center. >> i was listening to the press conference also. i got some information ahead of when we dipped into it live. charleston police chief mullin says they do have surveillance video of who they believe the suspect is as well as the suspect's vehicle. we are working right now to turn that and get that to you. they describe the suspect as armed and dangerous and they say they need the public's help in finding him. he is described as a man in his early 20s, a white man with sandy blond hair standing 5'9". last night police say he stormed the emanuel ame church at 9:00 p.m. as a prayer service was under way. he killed eight inside that church and two rushed to the hospital and one died at a later time. the suspect did get away. here is what chief mullin said about the moments after the massacre. >> this was a very chaotic scene. when we arrived, we had a lot of moving parts. we were tracking this individual with canines and we were making sure he was not tht area to commit other crimes. >> r

katy zachry is at the patco station in haddonfield. katy? >> reporter: unfortunately, those mass transit problems persist for patco riders because later this morning, during the morning rush patco will not be in service. we are at a very dark haddonfield patco station right now. a lot of power outages in that area. you're only seeing the station because the lights from our truck are lighting it up. presumably these bicyclesvh left by patco riders who could not get back over here from philadelphia or their other destination in new jersey because mass transit was so affected by last night's storm. because of the storm, the subsequent power outage that's why patco is not offering service this morning. local power companies trying to restore the power. we were told they should have it restored after midnight to confirm that i've been calling repeatedly to our patco spokespeople and representative. but because of the power outages and the difficulty contacting people calls are just quite frankly not going through. the good news is for all patco r

nbc 10's katy zachry is live in gloucester county where the most recent robbery happened. ill us in katy. >> reporter: police say when the robber stormed this cvs behind me he went right through the front doors and was wearing heavily layered clothes at the time. you can see from the surveillance pictures he's also carrying a large green bin. police say he had a crowbar as well as a weapon. after he entered the store friday night just after 11:00, he grabbed a woman and threatened to kill her if the pharmacy did not hand over oxcycodone. police say there is a striking similarity to two other pharmacy heists in south jersey recently one in haddon feel the other in logan township. in both cases the robber entered the store dressed in heavy layered construction gear. the m.o. is so similar that police believe whoever entered this cvs behind me in woolwich township on friday night is the same suspect in those two other south jersey robbery cases. now in the case of this cvs heist, the robber got away on foot. no one inside the store was injured. police are really asking for the

nbc 10's katy zachry is live at that last location. what's new in the investigation? >> reporter: yes, rosemary it happened friday night just after 11:00. witnesses tell police this suspect went through the front doors of the store just after 11:00. he was dressed in heavily layered clothing holding a crowbar. we have surveillance video of the suspect. the robbery happened just after 11:00 friday night. according to police the suspect took a woman who was inside this cvs pharmacy hostage, saying he was going to shoot and kill her if the pharmacy technician did not give him all of the oxcycodone behind the counter. the pharmacy tech handed over the drugs. the suspect tried to steal keys to someone's car to use as a getaway vehicle but he was unsuccessful. as we said at the top of this story, police here believe this suspect is linked to several other robberies and other parts of new jersey as well as philadelphia. we'll talk about the similarities of those robbery coming up in the next half hour. reporting live from woolwich township katy zachry nbc 10 news. >>> the un

katy zachry has been monitoring the overnight developments from the digital operations center.we're hearing from a friend of the alleged shooter this morning. >> yes, that's right, vai. we're hearing from a friend that says recently dylann roof went on racial rants saying that he wanted racial segregation and the present also says in the hours leading up to the shooting rough spent time with his brother and also at the movies. on wednesday night, police say that dylann roof went to the wednesday night prayer service and bible study at emanuel ame church in charleston. they say he sat with the people inside for about an hour before suddenly standing up and allegely opening fire. case is being investigated as a hate crime. roof drove 250 miles to north carolina before he was arrested in a traffic stop. police do believe he acted alone. a friend tells us roof recently was talking about a plan of sorts. >> it hit me hard, you know. seeing a best friend you've known for seven years do something like this is pretty crazy. >> reporter: in all, six women and three men were killed in th

nbc 10's katy zachry is live in pennsville. bring us up to date. >> reporter: later this morning students and the community at pennsville community high school will wear blue one of the school's colors to support and rally around their classmate and friend, kyle pszenny. his parents stepped away from his bedside last night to talk with us and give us an update. they said he's still in critical condition, 17 years old, a star football player at the high school. was hit by a car early sunday morning riding his skateboard home. the driver of the hyundai elantra did not stop after impact. witnesses say that impact threw kyle several hundred yards down the street. he's a star football player here at pennsville memorial high school. he's known throughout the community. he underwent hours of surgery last night. local police tell us they do have some leads but they really need the public in inwith information, to step up and offer that information. any eyeweiss aitness accounts. coming up you'll hear from a witness about the crash. rep

we sent nbc 10's katy zachry to the patco station in haddonfield. it looks like some folks never made it back to that station last night. tell us about it. >> reporter: yes, rosemary and vai. we're seeing bicycles left at the patco station at haddonfield, presumably from riders who could not make it back to haddonfield, their destination last night because service was interrupted during the evening commute as the storms rolled through. we do have video from the damage -- of the damage caused by last night's weather. it caused considerable damage to this area trees fell over wires down mass transit was affected, as i said during the morning rush. that interruption for patco has lasted through this morning. service is suspend on the entire patco line through the morning commute. we're told there are power crews who are working on restoring the power. we were told it should have been restored just after the midnight hour. i've been trying to get in touch with the patco spokesperson who can confirm that for me. cell service is so tough in this area beca
