katy zachry is live on scene.tell us what you know about this crash. >> tracy, it's extremely slow going around the scene. for the last 45 minutes we were caught in the backup as dozens  of other drivers are right now. we have a few still pictures from the scene. before we get to them, behind me, my photographer will zoom in. what we're focusing on right now, this vehicle you see stopped right here with the flashing lights, that is one of the two vehicles involved in this deadly crash. that is a salt truck that pulled over to the side of the road. it's a few hundred yards away from where there's another vehicle, a four-door sedan where we're told the driver of that sedan died in this crash. it happened probably about two hours ago on route 55 south near the exit for route 56. these two vehicles, we're told by state police, are the only vehicles involved in the crash. we do know it is a salt truck, a dump truck type vehicle carrying salt, presumably for the weather that we've been experiencing in the overnight hou

nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us on the scene. katy, this fire spread to a nearby building, is that right? >> it did, vai. normally we don't talk about how many firefighters it took to put out a fire but in this case it's unique. it's a lot. nearly 100 firefighters from throughout delaware county were called out to this scene you're looking at right now. this is the building that caught on fire after about 15 vehicles initially caught fire. you can see the burn marks on the side of it. here's a look at the fire at the height of it from skyforce 10. our ground crews were not allowed to get close during the height of it for safety reasons. we launched skyforce 10. an auto body facility made up of a warehouse and car lot went up in flames in colwyn borough. people live all around this property and we were worried for their safety because of the overwhelming fumes. turns out, firefighters were worried, too. >> hazmat was called because there was a cloud in the area and if was unknown who was burning in the building. hazmat did declare

katy zachry is live in chester this morning. katy, what do you know? reporter: you can see behind me a lot has changed since we saw you all. fire crews have left. the scene has quieted quite a bit in the last 25 minutes or so. investigators did spend a few hours early this morning out here at the scene trying to determine how this damaging fire started. now, this was the scene when crews were in the middle of fighting the fire at the grape leaves deaner on edgemont avenue this morning. the fire broke out were we're told, just before 3:00 a.m. in the dining room area .restaurant was not open at the time. however, the ajase enent day's inn hotel was affected and the guests staying there were affected as well. they tell me they woke up to thick smoke filling their hotel rooms. some say they woke up to the hotel's fire alarm going off. everyone was told to evacuate the bulling. the fire chief says he knows how lucky they are, considering the number of people involved in this. >> the fact there are no injuries. >> we lucked out. somebody had to see it, luck

nbc 10's katy zachry is live at the digital operations center this morning with new developments. katy? >> tracy, just this morning, since we've been on the air police have identified brothers believed to be behind the deadly attacks yesterday. they've also named a third wanted man who is a key suspect in last year's deadly attacks in paris. that man is on the right of the brussels airport security wearing the hat and white jacket. he is najim laachraoui. police have been looking for him since the paris attacks. they say he worked in concert with the mastermind of the paris ta attacks, salah abdeslam, who was arrested in brussels last week. the two men alongside laachraoui, khalid and ibrahim el bakraoui. one of the witnesses was inside the airport for the blast and instantly thought back to the paris attacks. >> my thought at the time was that's one, that's two, three's coming, maybe even four. given what we know about what happened in paris, i thought there's a good chance i'm going to start hearing rifle fire. >> 30 people were killed in the brussels attacks at the airport and o

nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside school district headquarters in spring garden. ty, i know we spoke with some parents and they're understandably nervous about this. >> reporter: they are. their kids are nervous as well. that's why the district is hosting a meeting later tonight at 6:00 at the school in north philadelphia where this student attended. we also spoke to a doctor who says it's rare for others to come down with this deadly illness, even if they were in the same class as this teenager. the district has not released we know he was in ninth grade at george washington carver high school in north philadelphia. he died yesterday. the school will open on time today. bacterial meningitis infects the fluid around the brain, though it's not usually deadly. those who do die from it are often immuned compromised or have a pre-existing injury that puts them at greater risk. >> you have to be very close with the person, which is why bacterial meningitis can spread in populations that live in close living quarters. kissing would be a common way to spread it. >> take a

nbc 10's katy zachry is following the breaking developments from the digital operations center. aty? >> tracy, this happened within the past hour. nbc news has confirmed there was an explosion at the check-in area of the airport. now, a security source at the airport tells us there are multiple casualties. the first pictures and video are just coming in to the nbc 10 newsroom. here's what we know right now. two explosions ripped through brussels airport during the morning rush there. we're told there were hundreds of passengers trying to check in at the time. a spokeswoman for the airport says passengers were evacuated on to the tarmac and that a first aid team is in place right now. she's urging other people planning to travel today not to come to the airport. now, the explosions are taking place days after the prime suspect in the paris attacks. salah abdeslam, who you saw there was arrested in brussels. meantime in europe, a new manhunt is under way for a suspect who may be linked to the paris attacks. investigators say they found dna belonging to najim laachraoui during a rec

nbc 10's katy zachry just got live on scene. she's getting new information for us. aty, what do you know? >> tracy, we're along edgemont in chester. this is the grape leaf diner, formerly the sunrise diner. it's adjacent to thisç day's i. not long ago, a fire broke out at this diner and the fire and threatening smoke forced the evacuation of the adjacent day's inn. i've been told by the guests staying at the day's inn, they were told to leave their rooms but they can stay in the lobby and overhang here. the firefighters are more in a relaxed mode than they were at the height of the firefighting. they're still attracting hot spots but it is a much better scene than it was earlier when this fire broke out. they do seem to have it under control. i talked with paramedics on scene and there have been no injuries reported. that's the good news, considering all of the people you have as a part of this with the adjacent hotel. we have another crew getting information from the fire chief and people who were forced to evacuate from their hotel rooms. i'll have that coming up

nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us on campus. katy, it's quiet now.a different scene, i'm guessing later today, huh? >> add a few hours to where we are right now. it will be a totally different scene. i got new information from villanova staff about the sendoff today. the team will board the bus around 3:15 right outside the davis center, the practice facility for the wildcats and it's outside the davis center where studentsç and the communy are invited to gather. now, of course, villanova will be playing the oklahoma sooners saturday night in houston for the ncaa final four. there is a lot riding on this game. whoever wins goes to the championship monday night. the last time the wildcats went to the final four was in 2009. the last time they won the entire tournament was in 1985. today's sendoff will be informal but a big motivation boost for the team. >> we expect to have the pep band here to play music, pump up the crowd and anticipate them walking out of the building and getting on the bus. >> for students who are wanting to attend the send offha

nbc 10's katy zachry is live outside lankenau medical center in wynnewood this morning. what can this do, katy? >> reporter: they have an ecmo machine. it takes blood out of the body and the machine oxygen ates the blood when the heart and lungs aren't able to do that. here in lankenau they've recently invested in four portable ecmo machines. doctors say they are saving even more lives than before because it allows a patient at another hospital to remain hooked up to an ecmo machine while being transported here in.past they would have to be unhooked. that was risky. especially during the current flu season, these portable ecmos are game changers when it comes to treating people whose lungs have filled with fluid. >> once we put them on the pump, we can save their oxygen levels. the body can survive until the lungs get better. for many of the young, healthy people, the youngs ultimately heal up. >> coming up in the next hour, you'll meet a patient whose life was saved because of the ecmo machine. reporting live in wynnewood, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >>> the woman with the

nbc 10's katy zachry is live on scene. katy, what do we know right now?> well, tracy, since we last saw you at 4:30, this is what's changed. take a look at the roof of the grape leaf diner. there are no longer firefighters on the roof having to cut through the damaged area and spray water on hot spots. it looks like they turned over the diner to investigators who got on scene within the last half hour and are currently looking into the cause of this fire. the greape leaves diner was closed at the time the fire broke out. it broke out just before 3:00 a.m. fortunately, the closest fire department is sewnly about a block away. as soon as the call for smoke in this area came in, firefighters nearby looked outside their station, saw smoke and got here as fast as they could. while all this was happening, dozens of people were sleeping inside the adjacent hotel. we have video of the scene outside the day's inn while firefighters were attacking the smoke and flames. we've spoken to some of those guests who were forced from their rooms, forced to go into the lobb

reporting live in colwyn borough, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >>> thanks, katy. a father, a friend and a new jersey state trooper. this morning many people across our region are mourning the loss of trooper sean cullen killed in the line of duty. trooper cullen was responding to the scene of an accident on i-295 in west deptford on monday night when he was hit by a passing car. paramedics air lifted cullen to cooper medical center. he died from head injuries. trooper cullen was 31 years old. he was a two-year member of the force. his former comrades said they are shaken by the loss of their friend. >> the biggest thing about him, not only was he outgoing and percentable, he truly worked hard and knew what his goals were. >> it's hard because the guy had a family. >> trooper cullen leaves behind his fiance, a baby boy and another child on the way. the driver who hit cullen stopped immediately and cooperated with investigators and no charges have been filed. >>> many states across the country updated laws over the last few years to protect police and emergency work

nbc 10's katy zachry is live on scene. katy, give us an update. >> reporter: hi, tracy. the good news is, the fire is out. as you can see behind me as we focus in on the roof area, firefighters are digging through some of the damaged spots. they were just pouring water on that area to ensure there are no hot spots and trying to control the hot spots. investigators have gotten on scene since we last saw you at 4:00 a.m. to look into the cause of this fire. here's what happened, according to the chester fire chief who we spoke to about 15ç minutes ago. overnight, this fire broke out from the dining room area of the grape leaf diner on edgemont avenue here in chester. the diner was close at the time. it is not 24 hours. there were no customers inside. fire crews are located just a block from here. that's the closest fire station. when they got the call that there was smoke coming from this area, they looked outside and were able to see the smoke from their fire station headquarters. they got here, called for backup. they were able to put the fire out within less than an ho
