. >>> and joining me now, jim kavanaugh, former atf special agent in charge and former attorney, special fbi agent, head of the fbi's active shooter program, the author of stop the killing, how to end the mass shooting crisis. catherine, the focus now, shifting to motive. it's rare that the alleged gunman of this kind, mass shooting, he's in his 70s. of that community. what does this tell you? >> it's not uncommon for a 14509er to shoot in his community. we had an 85-year-old shooter at a holocaust museum. that's one of the oldest i dealt with. we hardly ever have a shooter up in this age range. to me, that points towards personal. it's a personal issue. so maybe that is the situation here. i know we don't know the motive yet, but i see that the age is kind of indicating that maybe there's this historical you know, relationship issue with the community and the people in the community. >> jim, the officers who briefed on sunday said that the gunman was carrying a semiautomatic assault pistol. not the long gun rather. ar-15 style gun, but in any case, a really dangerous weapon and illegal

. >> well, we are going to go first to the manhunt happening now in washington state, and lucy kavanaughking the latest. the yakima, washington, police are able to identify the suspect, and they are describing him as armed and dangerous. they are surrounding a home there and identify him as jarid h haddock, and they are saying that they have arrived there at 3:30 in the morning, and when they got to the circle k, they identified three dead people, but listen to yakima police chief. >> this is a random shooting, and there is a danger to the community, and we don't have a motive and we don't know why. >> he is a danger to the community, and he pulled into gas station and tried to get in, but he couldn't and walked across the street to the circle k and walked in and shot two individuals and walked out and shot another individual outside and shot into a car and got awayk and the police described ate as carjacking, but they believe it is his vehicle, and then the s.w.a.t. standoff is under way, and they are urging people to stay away from the area. back to you. >> thank you, lucy kafanov. and

joining me now on the phone, msnbc terrorism contributor, jim kavanaugh.charge, former hostage negotiator for atf. jim, thank you very much for your time tonight. from a law enforcement perspective what's your assessment of the situation unfolding with this white van thus far. we're seeing, it's one door open on your screen. and there's a woman currently taking photos. what's your assessment of the situation? >> good afternoon, symone, it's possible suicide, the suspect could be dead inside the van. it depends though how they came, was the van driving when they stopped it, we don't have those details [inaudible] just stopped, they had to put the swat procedure on it. they're worried about two things, one -- if there's a bomb in the van, secondly, is he in there with a rifle and his firearm. so, that's why they use the two armored vehicle those are called bare cats. they put one in the front and one of the. that's the van is [inaudible] , sometimes, you have a killer like that he knows he strapped. the event is not only a homicide but a suicide, sometimes s

congressional republicans playing baseball and attempted assassination of supreme court justice brett kavanaugh and paul pelosi january 6th. and on and on and on. it does seem more prevalent on the right against democrats than republicans but either way, there is too much of it. how did we get here? >> well,l like you said, violen rhetoric used by elected officials is always inexcusable and regardless of what party the individual using it is affiliated with that beg said, donald trump invited solomon pena's of the world into the republican party and become what is referred to as the maga wing and these individuals really have what seems to be like this apocalypse apo apocalypse fetish. they believe elections were stolen and it's changing the makeup of the country and taking rights away from them and it has brought about reaction. if you look at the individuals arrested on january 6 fth, the patriots, individuals whose backgrounds were filled with criminal history such as spousal abuse, felony assaults, those were the individuals that donald trump welcomed into the republican party and that make

you saw the armed men threatening justice kavanaugh and you saw in the lead up to january 6th, 2021, online conversations existing about taking that distrust and those frustrations with government, largely propagated by donald trump's conspiracy theories. more than 800 defendants who have been charged by the department of justice for attacking the capitol of the united states. i was having a conversation with michael beschloss about this. we may not see a civil war, he said, in america anytime in our near future, but what you will see are these outbreaks of violence and what you see over these last months is exactly that. this was an individual who had lost in a landslide but what you saw was go and take deliberate actions to individuals to shoot up the homes of four public officials. four individuals who won their elections, something this than did not do and instead of going back and running for office again, this man tried to take physical violence and tried to use that as a source of finding that option for him to find as the alternative path forward. >> vaughn, thank you very mu

this topic and if you think about what this led to, it led to an assassination attempt on justice kavanaugh and all the members of the court that voted on this had pprotester in front of her house and all merrick garland can raid marla bmar-a-lago but he cannott supreme court justices when coming to their houses. we have never anything like this in the history of supreme court. everyone talked about donald dod trump breaking norms. if a supreme court justice wants to rule in a i way the left doesn't like, they need to fear for their life. they know no one is coming to save them and there will be no repercussion for someone who puts their life in danger. the seriousness of them not finding out who did this and punishing them to the fullest extent of the law is going to have ramifications we can't imagine. cheryl: someone will think i can get away with this the next go-round. a lot of sensitive business corporate cases come to the supreme court. things with regards to whether it's unions, whether it's labor laws, i mean, the whole gamut, medical cases. who is to say that somebody isn't vulner

at a protest outside their homes and at an alleged aa saws nation plot against justice brett kavanaughme now, a member of the supreme court bar. mark, thanks so much for joining us. i want to get to some of the cases. first off, title 42. that'll be, i think, in february. when you look at what has had some opposition at the court, neil gorsuch in his dissent against continuing with title 42, he said the court should not be in the business of perpetuating administrative edicts designed for one emergency because the elected officials failed to address that emergency. how much do you expect title 42 to make, remain in place considering you've got some serious court oppositionsome he was joined in his dissent -- not in the wording of it, but in general -- with other liberal justices. >> well, the title 42 the supreme court case can really is about who gets to make these decisions involving border security. now, what we have before the supreme court is over a dozen states argue that they are stakeholders because, to the extent that border security is nonif existent, they are the ones that w
