and michael kay are both here. colleen, you were first. you were instrumental in finding air france flight, and you did. tell me what you would do here at this particular juncture. >> well, what we should be doing, don, what we're doing now is trying to keep track of all the different areas where the aircraft could potentially have gone down. we still have possibilities that it could be farther north, it could have crashed farther south. you know, we keep hunting around in these different areas as new evidence comes in. the approach that we used in the air force search is called applying basian search theory. what this does is allows you to keep track of all the evidence you have and its uncertainties. and at any one time you can refer to a probability map to where the evidence points would be the highest likelihood areas to go search. that's where we would recommend day to day you put your effort. right now it looks like they're chasing a very hot clue that puts them in this northern area, but they're coming up empty, which is lending cre

michael kay, i want to bring you in as a pilot in the royal air force.news that they spotted something, and a second plane for the very first time this has happened, a second plane was able to get a read on that object, whatever it was in the water, it made me wonder, what is it does a pilot do once you spot something? i have seen the diagrams of the p-8 and something called a storage rack in the back. and i wondered if their jettisoned to mark the territory. kyung la reported they did the math coordinates. the what do you do as a pilot when you see something? >> let me touch on the first question first, ashleigh. what we're going through is a process of refinement here. you've had the inmar satellite able to track out a range and through correlation and mapping and frequency modulations of what they got back from the pings, they have managed to say there is a southern arc. the bit we don't know, the unknown bits, are the endurance and speed of the aircraft. for me, still a big gap in the analysis in what happened after that jet after the transponder wen

this is to michael kay. explanation for that traps ponder being turned off other than by act of the pilot? >> can i say, i've got huge admiration for the way he conducted that interview this evening. it is humbling. i thought the way he conducted himself was humbling. the transponder, for me, there was some unanswered questions. it works off secondary surveillance radar, which works out to around 200 miles off the coast. i would like to see more information on the distance from the coast that that transponder was turned off. there were two runs it was turned off. the first it was damaged by something, ie an explosion, and the second it was turned off. if it's outside of 200 miles -- i don't think we're addressing that. >> with the change in the search area today, do you think we're any closer here? >> yes, i do. i would like to ask richard a question, which is the investigation is an unusual one because it demands a new skill set to any other normal skill investigation. it's not clear where the various cells

michael kay is going to join us in just a little bit here. mike o'kay as former minister of defense. and christine dennis son. first what do you make of these new developments? first, as the malaysians were holding a press conference, someone handed him a piece of paper saying, now there has been something found in china, and here it is. >> right. it is confirmation that there is something there that they want to go and have a look at. is it the same piece of debris that has now moved 100 or so, 140-odd kilometers over from the last known position? is it the same piece? is it another piece? the prime minister of australia was very clear that this needs to go and be investigated. and that's why there are eight planes on their way to this part of the ocean at the moment to actually search for this area. this has been the next biggest, most credible development, if you like, of the day, don. >> i want to ask that question to michael kay now, former adviser to the uk minister of defense. what do you make of these new developments here? >> hi, ric

this one is for mikey kay. the plane dropped from 35,000 feet to 12,000, what would have been its fuel range? i don't know if you know that. >> that's a great question. what we're seeing at the moment, is conflicting reports. we're seeing complementary information. we know that the lower an air force goes, the less efficient it becomes in terms of endurance. it would bring into question whether a boeing 777 could make it down to the area that all of the focus has been on. so, they're noncomplementary in that respect. what i would like to see in the investigation, is trying to think outside of the box, and corroborate with the evidence we got. and drawing a line back up to the last part of the ping. looking how long that would be. it's probably on the outer bounds of the endurance. it would have to fly close to singapore. they would use it as a leapfrog to get to europe. and through ind knees ya. are we getting radar traces from them? there's a lot of conflicting evidence going on. and the sad thing is, if we're
