senator kay haguen. the koch brothers funded group afp is running millions of dollars of ads against kay for months to try to soft en her up for whichever republican runs against her. it was today that north carolina voters went to the polls to decide who will be the republican running against kay hagan. the republican establishment like mitt romney got behind one candidate. the current speaker of the north carolina house, tom tillis. social conservative mike huckabee, former governor of arkansas endorsed a baptist pastor in the running as well. senator rand paul got behind a north carolina doctor who has never before run for office. head ed into tonight's voting it was the rand paul endorsed greg brannon who had a chance to have forcing the front runner into a run off. they would love a run-off. obviously the best outcome for them is if they ended up running against mr. brannon. democrats would have the chance to run against someone who says everyone has the right to own a nuclear weapon. just forcing h

kay hagan is quite damaged in this state. she has a very low approval rating.opular. she's not a perfect candidate even for herself. she's also running in a year that is very difficult. she won when barack obama won north carolina in 2008. and that lifted her very, very strongly. even if she did the exact same percentages with the exact same people, kay hagan would lose in november just because we know that republicans will have higher turnout in a midterm election than democrats will. so she really needs to do something. i talked to a lot of democrats in the state. they said what she needs to do is take that anger toward the house speaker and translate to votes in november. and, you know, again, they have this very, very conservative record, but you look at the north carolina republican primary electorate. 58% do not believe in evolution. 52% of republican likely primary voters tomorrow do not believe barack obama was born in america. so this is -- you know, thom tillis really has a very long way to stretch himself to be far right enough to get through that re

if they all vote, good lord, you know, that's all kay hagan would need to win, but there's something even worse and more insidious about it. if you listen to what tillis said on the tape, not only the divide and conquer strategy, but the absolutely outrageous assumption that he made that there are people who choose to be poor so that they can get food stamps and welfare. that people actually make a decision to be in that condition. they say to themselves, well, i don't want to get a job that pays good money. i'd rather get a little pittance on welfare and food stamps. that's a ridiculous statement to make about any human beings. people want to work. they want the dignity of work, they want to earn decent money to take care of their family. no one says, aha, i'm going to be poor so i can get food stamps and be on welfare. it's an idiotic suggestion. >> very idiotic, but let me pick up on that, jess, because we heard tillis on the tape talking about divide and conquer, as you pointed out, but it seems like this has seeped into the this kind of rhetoric is seeped into the ground water.
