because, as you know, there are still some holdouts, all though kay hagan has obviously made a different all, let's remember that what we all want to see in our society is long, stable relationships. and i would argue that whether it's a heterosexual or homosexual relationship, that these are -- as long as they're long and stable and oriented in that way, i think it's a better this evening for society. and i think there have been a lot of democrats already there. certainly there have been many people with respect to the whole issue of equality wanting to be there. and we have seen platonic changes in public attitude on this issue just even in the last two, three years. we've even seen some churches change their mind on this whole issue. so i think, yes, maybe some people are catching up. maybe some people will never be there but when we look at the whole society, i believe that what we're seeing is that people are saying, hey, this is okay with us and let's move beyond this. >> let me play what the president said yesterday. he talked to one of our folks at telemundo. >> i think that not

people like kay hagan, folks like that who don't want to be on record supporting the assault weaponsan. the house figured as well to add the assault weapons ban to any major bill would kill it. >> even though a majority of people want a ban. >> the reality is polls don't vote. polls aren't up for re-election. all of the folks in the red states are up for re-election in 2014. i think in many ways they will be happy to vote against an amendment, this assault weapons ban, but also support universal background checks. that will make them look moderate. >> mark, how do you build an organization of people that really do keep their minds on and their money on gun safety? >> well, i think we've started to do it. at this point we have more than 900 mayors around the country, 100 are republicans. we have almost 1.5 million grassroot supporters and all of them are about as heated up as we have seen about anything. they recognize this is a national moment. if you're going to turn this issue around, now is the time. we've sent more than 200,000 e-mails into the white house and members of congress

mayor chealander, mark pryor, kay hagan were the democrats who voted against their party still.ark pryor said he did so not because he was worried about the tax increase but arkansas is a farm state and he did not support cutting farm subsidies. the republican bill had more defections. various republicans thought that this bill would have given too much power to the president by giving him extra flexibility and it would not have done enough to protect defense from cuts. host: from your perspective, what is the most important thing to watch out for in this process over the next few days and weeks? guest: the most important thing to watch for is will there be a public backlash for the sequester cuts to be dealt wit? there's a real question as to whether the public will notice. the barometer is going to be the stock market. as it has been in standoffs in the past. the 2008 tarp vote when the house voted that down, there was a strong stock market reaction and congressional leaders scrambled back to the drawing board. if the market thinks the u.s. economy is fine with the cuts, i don

mark pryor of kansas, kay hagan, north carolina, mark begich, alaska, max baucus, montana, all are red in 2014. so given that, is a budget compromise unlikely? >> well, alex, i think we're a ways off from that, but this is really the opening rounds. if this were a baseball game, we'd still be in the first inning. but it is important that we did this because contrary to popular belief, it's not the budget, it's the budget resolution and as you said in your opening, it's nonbinding, but it does kind of set the table for what senate democrats have put on the table, a balanced plan. has a lot of cutting and has revenue so we can invest in priorities and it focuses on job creation. but republicans in the house have their version, and now you have two starkly different approaches, but that's how you have to start the discussion. so i think it's important we did this. it was a lot of work to get to this point, but we are still in the very early stages of this. >> do you think the american public has an appetite for $1 trillion in tax increases over the next decade? >> well, i think most ameri

but very similar to this is something that i, along with several democrats, the primary one being kay hagan, and -- are concerned about what has happened in terms of a decision that was made by the secretary of defense to take out the tuition assistance, a very small amount of money, for our troops that are over there serving. this is kind of interesting, because i was a product of the draft. my service was not voluntary when i was in, and i thought a total voluntary force would not be effective, and as i found out that it was. well, one of the main reasons that people do sign up, a lot of people say, yes, i want to serve my county, a lot of them say, yes, i want a career in the army, navy, marine, air corps. however, they also want to advance themselves, they want an education. and in many cases, the only way that they can get one is to have this tuition assistance program. i can recall being over in th the -- the mess halls in afghanistan and actually out in the field in afghanistan. we have some 200,000 army troops over there right now that are participating in this program. and it's not
