death of my dear colleague, senator kay hagan, and i would ask unanimous consent that these remarks be placed in the appropriate section of the congressional record in which other remarks were made of kay hagan. the presiding officer: without objection. mr. reed: kay hagan was an extraordinary individual, a great senator from the state of north carolina. i had the opportunity to express my thoughts to her husband chip, who i talked with yesterday. we will all miss her advocacy, her spirit, her support of military families, small businesses, students, and americans everywhere, particularly in her home state of north carolina. i had the pleasure of serving with her in this body on the armed services and bank committees, and we traveled together to iraq, afghanistan, and pakistan in 2010. all of us here in the senate are saddened by this loss and we send all of our thoughts to chip and her family. i must recall a vivid memory.

we've lost and many of us lost a friend, brokenhearted that senator kay hagan passed away at the age 66. i spoke to her husband chip a few hours ago and told him from the first time i met kay hagan i knew she was special. she remained that way every day since. she was an amazing force, never loud, but always strong, effective, hardworking, dedicated principled and just a kindhearted person. he told me that he and kay had just had a wonderful weekend, a dinner, a wedding surrounded by friends and family. she even got to spend some time with joe biden who was in town. chip said she was just beaming. i take some comfort in knowing that. in fact, it reminded me of how kay lived her life. she was never one to let sometimes painful realities of life and politics get her down. i knew kay for over a decade, as a senate senator, as a candidate, brilliant senator and as a former senator who returned to private life without an ounce of regret or real will. in all that time, i never heard once, never heard her once complain. she was never sour or sarcastic or dejected. she remained always to her

on monday of this week we -- we lost a fine lady in kay hagan. it is very difficult for me to put into words my admiration for the senator from north carolina. but the fact is is that kay was the first person -- the kind of person, the first time you met her, you felt at ease. she had the ability to calm a situation down. when she was running in 2008, i went to north carolina, and she had an event at a -- a farm. i think it's a hog operation, if my memory serves me correct. and i had a chance to meet her for the first time and -- and really she was somebody that -- she was somebody that you knew if she was able to get into this body would be successful. well, in 2008, she won that election and she came here and she made a difference. she made a difference for working families and small businesses and family farm agriculture. and i just wanted to express my condolences to her husband chip and her kids and grandkids and -- and let them know that she was very loved by all in this body. madam president, i also want to rise today and speak on behalf of
