kaylie h kayl kaylie has been speaking to people on the ground. >> we're spoke with the guadalupe sheriffs office and they confirm that the shooter is dead. there was a brief pursuit following the shooting and the suspect was apprehended just north of wilson county where sutherland springs is. this that brief pursuit and chase, the suspect was appreh d apprehended and unclear if deputies were responsible for shooting him or if his death was self-inflicted. the shooter is dead and this investigation continues as there are so many questions as to what led to this tragic event today. >> tell us more about what you learned about the community and the church and the importance of the church to the community. >> sutherland springs is a tight knit community. small friends and neighbors surrounding you. churches are the center point of this community. first baptist church has the only food pantry in town. the doors are open to anyone in need of help any time day or night. one witness i spoke to who was a cashier across the street. she said it was her understanding this was in the middle of the chu

cnn's kaylie is with me now and talking to a number of people.dead, but we don't know all the circumstances surrounding that person's death. >> it's unclear what happened after the gunman walked into first baptist church in sutherland springs this morning. for a very tight knit community there. after the shooting occurred, he took off in a vehicle. it's our understanding that there was a brief pursuit by police that crossed the county line where then we are unsure if the gunman took his own life or if police took him down. we learned from guadalupe county, the gunman is dead. that pursuit was brief. about 8 to 10 miles to then see the ariel footage when we showed you the church there. as for the injured, we are learning six patients are being treated in university health hospital. it is also continuing to bring patients in from witnesses i talked to near the scene. they say any air support has stopped at this point. the four or five helicopters helped to service the area. we are seeing federal, state, and local asset there is on hand as this inve

kaylie har tongue joins us live. how are people coping?there is sadness and people are hurting, but as one member told us, they see goodness prevailing and they are finding strength in that. more than 500 people came together set up on a baseball field about a half mile from the church. members of that congregation were there to worship and victims's families and others who traveled and spoke to one man from dallas and another who came in from north carolina to show their support for the grieving community. wanting good to prevail in the fight against evil. the senator addressed the crowd and afterwards he shared his reaction to the pastor's sermon. >> i saw him at the front of the church, comforting others and he lost his 14-year-old daughter. it's remarkable. but a testament to their faith and compassion for others in this difficult time. >> pastor pomeroy said he knew every person who was killed last sunday through tears. he said those were some of his best friends and his daughter. that strength he showed his community today set an exa
