kazakhstan, of course, was part of the former soviet union. we all know vladimir putin has said publicly he wants to recreate the soviet empire that would include kazakhstan and foreign minister, russian foreign minister lavrov has actually said out loud that he does not believe that kazakhstan is a state. so kazakhstan has been nervous about russia's ambition vis a vis, you know, its sovereignty. and so they've tried to keep good relations with us and with the chinese to balance that dynamic with russia. so that's complicated with azerbaijan. of course, it was azerbaijan national airline aircraft that flew in and and experienced this accident. their pilots were probably azerbaijani. i don't know that detail, but for some reason the pilots didn't land. actually in the russian republic. they didn't try to land in grozny, in chechnya. they chose to try and actually crash landed in kazakhstan. so that's an interesting wrinkle. and the azerbaijanis and the russians have been trying to get a little bit closer together. and that's part of a whole 'n

we picked up the trail on the chinese border with kazakhstan.u can see behind me, there's the longest freight train carrying all of these containers. and this station is really important to us in our investigation because, from what we know, it often carries goods such as tomatoes from china into kazakhstan and then onwards to europe. it's absolutely massive. i mean, i've been standing here for about two minutes and the containers just don't stop. china doesn't publish information about where its tomatoes go, but once they cross the border, neighbouring kazakhstan does. it releases information about what's on the trains and where the shipments are headed. but there was something missing. in the shipping data, there was one company that was missing from the records, and that company was guannong. what was happening to their tomatoes? there may be a reason for this. in 2020, the us government sanctioned the xpcc, which runs guannong, over forced labour concerns. there has been a real commitment to shining a bright light on human rights violations
