kcbs radio's matt bigler has more on this mystery.joins us with more on the telephone. >>> this is a concerning trend frank with sharks killing sea otters. it's not a new phenomenal. they have been tracking this for some time in the mid-90s 90s about 10% of the dead sea otters found along the central coast with shark bites but now that number is around 30% at the point where shark attacks are the greatest threat to the recovery of the endangered sea otter. scientists are still scratching their heads on this one of the they don't know why sharks are killing otters. the leading theory is that it may have something to do with the growing number of sea lions and elephant seals, the white shark's main meal. sharks may be changing their hunting pattern accidentally biting sea otters mistaking them for their favorite prey. pollution is still a contributing factor in otter deaths according to the "mercury news." but scientists say if the rate of shark attacks had remained where it was about a decade ago, then the sea otter population would be

we have jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com to give us some perspective. good afternoon, jason. >> reporter: grace, i think everybody was hoping that that ipo would already be filed but more than likely facebook will file its paperwork after the closing bell. now, there's a lot of debate as to how big of a filing this will be. estimates have ranged between $5 and $10 billion. at the high-end if they raise $10 billion, that could place the valuation on the company of about $100 billion. if it's at the low and of $5 billion, that would make a $50 billion valuation. that would still be more than double what google's valuation was when it went public in 2004. the key for facebook after it does file is to go on a road show and convince investors that it is indeed a good investment into the future. facebook has 800 million users. the question is, how much more growth is there after that number? and how can they monetize those users? according to the the latest citigroup research back in the fall, facebook did have the most eyeballs online 16% of all internet use

here now is kcbs moneywatch reporter jason brooks. jason, the question is kind of -- will this be sustainable, right? >> that's the key, grace. we have actually seen a decent trend over the past several months. and the gain today obviously a lot bigger than what we've seen. over the past five months an average of 183,000 jobs being added to the economy. that's enough to keep the employment situation in line with all the new people coming into the picture. 250,000 starts to bring down unemployment. now, we have to remember that there's still so many people that are unemployed out there. 12.7million in january. 5.5 million people who are considered underemployed, people working part time that wish they were working full time. in fact, the underemployment rate is 15.1%. just a staggering number. but this is the trend that we need to see. it would help out in so many different ways. we have just talked about the housing market and all the homeowners dealing with foreclosure. the housing market would get a huge boost if employment rose, al

we have jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com to explain.d morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we knew that apple had a pretty big 4th quarter said so in its earnings and according to industry researcher idc, the company led all shipments for smartphone makers in the fourth quarter with 37 million. that more than doubled what apple shipped in the 4th quarter of last year giving them 23.5% of the overall market. that topped samsung which was in second place with just under 23%. samsung though also had a really big fourth quarter, shipping 36 million smartphones. nokia in third place and blackberry in way behind in fourth place. stock market seg off this morning continuing worries about the greek debt crisis selling off this morning. they may sign off on new austerity measures but massive riots in the country and there's always a chance that one of the members of the coalition government could opt out of ratifying that and then we don't know what's going to happen if they will get another bailout. could lead to a default if that does no

kcbs radio's matt bigler joins from us san jose to explain. >> reporter: good morning.ing about is a pretty serious upgrade for caltrain that could mean trains traveling up to 110 miles per hour as soon as 2016. that's five to 10 years sooner than anyone expected. now, what's going on is bay area transportation officials are talking to each other and to the high-speed rail authority to try and combine funding to pay for this upgrade. it would have to pay electricification of caltrain, advanced train controls, overcrossings or railroad crossings have to be elevated. it would cost up to $1 billion. and the two groups, the bay area transportation groups and the high-speed rail board, would have to combine all that money to pay for the upgrade for caltrain. last year joe simitian from palo alto said caltrain and high-speed rail should work together in a blended rail system on the peninsula. >> rather than thinking of this as two separate systems with duplicative costs and impacts, think about how we can use upgraded infrastructure, a 21st century caltrain presumably involvi

here it talk about that and much more, jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. they are standing in line already. >> reporter: good morning. all signs pointing to facebook filing its ipo paperwork today. now, reuters is reporting that it may be a more conservative offering than what most expect. it could value the company at $50 billion. a lot of reports have doubled the numbers. even at $50 billion, it would pale in comparison to the google filing at $23 billion. adp reports there was a gain of 170,000 private payroll jobs last month ahead of the january jobs report on friday. small businesses adding 95,000 jobs. decent manufacturing news out of china and europe this morning helping the stock market off a very solid january. the blue chips gained 3.5% and s&p up by 4.4%. that was the best january for them since 197. so far, so good this morning. dow is up by 96 points. is is up 9. good start -- s&p up 9. >>> 6:49 now. an airport security agent is in hot water accused of stealing ipads from passengers' luggage. his name is clayton and he works for the tsa at the

jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com reports. >> reporter: good morning.his is a headache for apple in china over the past cult weeks. pro view electronics is trying to lay claim to the ipad name in mainland china which apple is fighting. doesn't want an injunction to be able to sell it. now pro view amended its lawsuit in santa clara saying that it wants to void its agreement to sell the ipad name for global rights to apple back in 2009. that would give proview a lot more chance of getting a bigger pile of money. it remains doubtful as to whether or not they can actually void that agreement and a judge in china will rule tomorrow on an appeal by apple against an injunction against selling the ipad in china. just the latest legal battle for apple. >>> economic reports out this morning not that good. durable goods down 4% in january biggest drop in three years. the reason was that a lot of firms ramped up their spending in december to take advantage of an expiring tax credit, tax break on capital good purchases. so that led to that drop. home prices fell ba

. >> here to talk about that and the rising gas prices, kcbs moneywatch reporter jason brooks. good morning. >> reporter: oil prices very high just under $109 a barrel. that is a nine-month high. california also getting hit not only by the higher crude costs but also the refinery outage in washington state at a bp refinery recently. that gave us that quick surge in gas prices over the past few days. also, just a lot of concern over the iranian nuclear program. and that's causing that speculation to rise. a lot of analysts say there's about a 10 to $12 fear premium built into crude prices because of iran. and right now there's no signs of that slowing down. the improving economy tends to bump oil prices up as well as there could be more demand for those products. we could be getting the ipad 3 in march. there's been a lot of speculation about that. and apple insider says that it heard reports out of china that the fox con factory is getting ready to ship the ipad 3 next month. also, best buy just cutting the price on its ipad 2 unit. the cheapest wi-fi-only ipad 2 sells for $450

kcbs's political reporter doug sovern is outside las vegas for the nevada caucuses. doug. >> reporter: i'll tell you what the people here tonight for this mitt romney rally hope it will be romney who wins this nevada caucus tomorrow. they came, they saw, romney hopes they'll caucus for him. couple of hundred people, maybe 300 in the parking lot outside a pizza place where he came and gave about a 12-minute stump speech. his standard stump speech. all part of the pageant of the final day here as romney works the crowd. he had a couple of rallies as he looks for votes. he hopes it will turn his lead in the polls into a victory at the polls tomorrow. more than 50,000 nevada republicans will go to caucus meetings. romney is for exampling his fire on president obama but his main rival, newt gingrich, has been taking aim at romney with a blistering attack today at a rally of his own at a country and western saloon. the gingrich crowd had a good time at a rally and bar with sawdust on the floor and mechanical bull by the bar. gingrich called romney obama- like and said he c

and kcbs radio political reporter doug sovereign is in las vegas where he has been watching the caucuses all day today, doug? >> reporter: good evening, ann. that's right. based on what we saw at the caucus places we went to today, mitt romney will win here and win big. but not everybody is done voting. there is one more caucus meeting at 7:00 for religious voters who could not vote earlier today in clark county the las vegas area. clark county accounts for 70% of the state. so we won't really have meaningful statewide results until that caucus is over. all morning long, perhaps 50,000 nevada republicans went to local precinct caucus meetings to elect local delegates and cast ballots with their presidential preference. before the voting, people got up to speed on behalf of the chosen candidates, trying to convince their neighbors to vote for a certain candidate. and the ballots were cast. at the caucuses we went to, about 60% were for mitt romney. why? many voters told us that they think he's got the best chance of winning the election. >> i think that is the number one issue with this c
