onge, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. steve: about 100 people turned out this morning to fight a proposed oil pipeline across the state of iowa. iowa citizens for community improvement rallied outside the iowa utilities board offices in des moines. the group opposes the planned bakken pipeline. the board is expected to make a decision on it in the next couple of months. the board has received more than 2600 written statements against the pipeline project. stacey: broadlawns medical center breaks ground for a major expansion project. plans call for a 72,000 square foot medical clinic building, a 15-unit residency apartment building and remodeling its inpatient behavioral health area. the expansion is expected to be complete by 2017. quik trip is looking to expand on keo way. des moines planning and zoning will consider a site plan for quik trip to build a new convenience store at 12th and keo. the site would have ten gas pumps. the world food prize laureate award ceremony is taking place tonight at the statehouse. this yea

marcus mcintosh kcci 8 news, , iowa's news leader. stacey: two women are charged with trying to hold-up a des moines convenience store. des moines police say angela jefferson tried to rob the git n go on east euclid saturday, but got away with nothing. officers arrested the two women a short time later in a vehicle described by a witness. police say both tried using someone else's identity when questioned. kevin: fire investigators say they're still trying to pinpoint the cause of an fire at the coffee cup cafe. it started about 10:00 last night. no one was hurt. most of the damage occurred in the dining area, leading investigators to think the fire may have started there. the kitchen section of the cafe remains largely intact. stacey: the iowa house oversight committee says it is holding hearings next month on claims some of the material presented at the governor's conference on lgbt youth was inappropriate for some children at the conference. the conference was held at prairie meadows events center back in april. representative bobb

kcci's kim st. onge reports. kim: pete polson testified that he was high on methamphetamine on november 17, 2014, and doesn't remember shooting at three people in pleasant hill. his attorney says the drug intoxication created a mental disability which made it impossible to form the intent to kill. the prosecution argues everyone who came in contact with polson after he was arrested says there were no signs of intoxication. jurors spent monday going over testimony from 40 witnesses in 4 days and deciding whether polson is guilty of 9 charges. those include 3 counts of attempted murder, 2 counts of willful injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and failure to provide a tax stamp. but it's more complicated than just guilty or not guilty. if jurors don't believe polson is guilty of attempted murder they have the option to convict him of lesser charges assault -- lesser charges, assault causing serious injury, assault or not guilty. elizabe

kcci's mark tauscheck just back from west des moines. mark: true, this is hard to believe. 58-year-old john moore, jr. is charged with willful injury causing bodily injury. officers say they were called to 127 8th street around 6:20 this morning in west des moines on a report of a person who had been burned. they say they found 54-year-old jackie gilbert with burns on her upper body. she apparently waited almost 24 hours to report this. gilbert told police she had been arguing with moore thursday morning, when he threw an unknown flammable substance on her and then set her on fire. sgt. kock: this is a first for me. but i don't know i have ever heard of that before, someone intentionally lighting someone else on fire. mark: gilbert was taken to a hospital. polk county jail. look for much more on this breaking story tonight on air and online at kcci.com. steve: thank you, mark. the school bus sign says stop, but many drivers are still choosing to ignore it. stacey: polk county officers say bus drivers regularly report other cars passing b

kcci's kim st. onge is back from the polk county courthouse with what happened during day 2 of this trial. kim: that victim, matthew stephenson, says he saw a man sitting in an suv outside his father-in-law's home around 6:45 last november and said what's a.m. up, but got not response. he thought nothing of it and started to open the door to his truck when polson allegedly started shooting. stephensen was uninjured and able to take cover in front of the truck as polson continued to shoot. >> it happened so fast, it all did. i had been hunting for years; i knew it was a gun shot, glass is breaking. i don't know what is going on. i just instinctively was going for cover. kim: new dash cam video shown in court today is giving us a better idea of what happened when polson was taken into custody. the arresting iowa state trooper brian moses says the only thing that struck him as odd was how calm polson was considering the situation. >> did he appear in any way to be intoxicated? no. -- >> no. based on yo

live in johnston, ryan smith, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. stacey: this incident had us wondering, what kind of training do school bus drivers go through to deal with student behavior? the state of iowa has policies and procedures in place to make sure students are safe on a bus. aside from dot training to get a special license, drivers then go through scenarios on how to deal with unruly students. in most cases, they are told to pull over, secure the bus, and some districts like johnston have drivers work with a trainer. laura: this trainer has been with us since 2011. he is well-versed on what happens on a bus and what drivers can encounter on any given day. stacey: tonight at 6:00, cynthia fodor explains the specific steps school bus drivers go through to ensure student safety. steve: urbandale police need your help identifying two men spotted on hyvee store surveillance video stealing toilet paper and other things. police say the thefts involves more than $1200 in merchandise stolen from the store at 8701 douglas. these surveillance photo

kcci's kim st. onge live in studio with reaction from zach whitehill we're hearing for the kim: stacey, pete polson faced three counts of attempted murder for the three people he shot at. two of them were hit. but polson was only convicted on one of those counts and got off on lesser charges for the other two. whitehill says he wishes the punishment was harsher. it's been nearly one year since zach whitehill was shot in the back and neck by a complete stranger on a cold november morning. doctors told him the bullets missed hitting his carotid artery, spine, and esophagus by millimeters. zach: it missed so much that could have killed me. and that one went in as i was falling to the ground. so me falling a split second earlier could have made a big difference. kim: whitehill says he'll have permanent damage in his left bicep. he's still wondering why the shooter, pete polson, was convicted of an aggravated misdemeanor instead of a forcible felony. zach: yeah, they didn't believe his defense. but it st

in clarion, vanessa peng, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. stacey: just minutes ago, kcci obtained a letter sent out to parents by superintendent bob olsen. the letter says, in part, he confirms three students were expelled for the remainer of the academic year. but he added that he can't share any more information because of state and federal law concerning student privacy. a pleasant hill man is in the polk county jail, charged with two counts of lascivious acts with a child. court documents show 18-year-old kyle calvert used a social media app to communicate with someone he knew was a minor. calvert asked the victim to perform sex acts with other young children and record it. his bond is set at $40,000. kevin: we are still waiting to hear about the future of a para-educator in grinnell accused of making racist comments in front of two students. grinnell-newburg school district is telling kcci news he met twice this morning with the parents making the accusations. he says the investigation is not concluded, but he hopes to have a decision o

kcci's vanessa peng has more. vanessa: an alleged hazing incident here at clarion-goldfield-dows high school has exposed a rash of alleged incidents. police chief steve terhark tells us a group of three older football players would grab a into a room at the school, hold him down, and use their fingers to assault him. >> after every incident, they said that it was initiation your , freshman initiation. vanessa: what happened here is part of a disturbing national trend in high schools. >> it was like the most disgusting thing i've ever heard of. you know there's a lot of sick stuff, but come on, to do that to a kid? it's going to scar him for life. vanessa: terhark says the alleged hazing incidents would happen in between classes. football players, two seniors and one junior, would randomly pull freshman into rooms and assault them. terhark says the victims weren't specifically targeted. if the suspects saw a freshman player without any witnesses around, they would assault him. terhark says two weeks ago an incident

kcci's kim st. onge is live at the polk county courthouse to explain what happened during the jury's 2nd full day of deliberations. kim: the jury came back with 3 sets of questions today, the last of those questions were asked around 3:00 about whether attempted murder required premeditation or motive. polson sat in the court room today alongside his attorney and the prosecuting attorney to go over those questions. some of the other questions asked to clarify the definition of intoxication, mental disability, and sufficient mental capacity. and also whether the jury has to , be unanimous on every charge, the note specifically said what if we are not unanimous on some counts, but are on others? the court's answer was to reread one of the 69 instructions the jury was given that pertains to that particular question. this all relates to a november 2014 incident when police say polson went on a shooting rampage, injuring two people. polson says he was high on methamphetamine at that time and doesn't reme

onge, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. steve: new developments this afternoon in one of the most notorious missing children cases in u.s. history. the abduction and disappearance of jacob wetterling back in 1989. kevin cooney has the new details right now. kevin: steve, jacob was 11 years old when he was abducted in saint joseph, minnesota near st. cloud while of him in the 26 years since. today, authorities identified a person in interest in the case. he has been identified as heinrich. he was arrested last night on suspicious of receiving and authorities searched his home last summer with a warrant specifically mentioning jacob's clothing, but that was not found. while investigators say heinrich has not been charged in wetterling's case, his dna has been linked to a case of sexual assault of another boy in cold springs, minnesota shortly before wetterling disappeared. cold springs is also just 18 miles away from where wetterling vanished. >> as a result of the development of forensic technology that did not exist at the

kcci's vanessa peng is just back from iowa falls with a story you'll only see on kcci. vanessa: kevin, if tammie zeiser hadn't gone the extra mile, an iowa falls family might not be alive today. tammie: hi, it is so good to see you. jennifer: it's so good to see you. vanessa: just hours ago, tammie zeiser didn't know if jennifer smith and her three young kids were alive or not. zeiser and smith first met a day ago -- on the phone. tammie: thank you for calling first nurse. this is tammie. vanessa: zeiser is a maxwell registered nurse. she works for the mary greeley medical center first nurse call center, a free health care help line. it was just before 3:00 early thursday morning when smith called. smith's husband lucas was working overnight and wouldn't be home until 7:00. smith called to say everyone was sick. tammie: do you have a gas furnance? jennifer: yeah. tammie: ok, you may have some poisining going on if everybody is sick all of a sudden. jennifer: ok. tammie: so you need to call 911. can you do that? vanessa: at the same time, lucas smith was texting his wife

in studio, rose heaphy, kcci 8, iowa's news leader. couple is charged in a sexual abuse and child endangerment case. office says the abuse involved a juvenile. the incident reportedly happened august 13 at a home in the 300 block of highway 48 in newton. 46-year-old berlou barnard is charged with second degree sexual abuse, violation of sex offender registry, possession of a controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia. 38-year-old michelle wortman is charged with child endangerment. she is barnard's girlfriend. both are being held in the jasper county jail. kevin: new at 5:00, the des moines fire department made a little history today. captains steve brown, percy coleman, and kerry schneider were all appointed to district fire chief. brown and coleman are the first-ever african-americans to hold this position in the department's 132 years of history. the department says diversity is very important for a variety of reasons. one of them is because it helps firefighters better connect with more of the community. chief tekippe: it's reall

onge, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. stacey: a newton man and his girlfriend are charged in a child endangerment and sex abuse case. 46-year-old berlou barnard faces second degree sex abuse, providing false information to the sex offender registry, and drug charges. 38-year-old michelle workman faces charges of child endangerment. investigators say the incident happened around august 13 of this year. the iowa department of human resources was called in to assist in the case. kevin: a federal court found an iowa falls man guilty of threatening to cut the throats of some iowa judges. prosecutors say 35-year-old andre lafontaine, iii called the justice department in wasington and threatened to cut the throats of judges in eldora. the call was recorded by voicemail. sentencing will be at a later date. former state senator kent sorenson spent a second day on the stand in the trial of two former aides from the ron paul 2012 presidential campaign. jesse benton and dmitri kesari are accused of making secret payments to sorenson,

stacey: kcci's sally kidd is live in washington. sally, it's a bipartisan agreement, but not everyone supports it, right? sally: that's right. the agreement would increase federal spending by $80 billion but conservative lawmakers aren't happy. a budget breakthrough. representative boehner it's a : solid agreement and i told my colleagues there isn't any reason why any member should vote against this. sally: the two year plan lifts caps on defense and domestic spending and raises the debt ceiling through march 2017. it also prevents a huge hike in medicare premiums and deep reductions in social security disability benefits. sen. murray: congress can do its job when republicans push the tea party aside and work with us to get results. sally: house speaker boehner says the agreement helps clean the barn before a new speaker, presumably congressman paul ryan, takes the gavel. rep. boehner: i didn't want him to walk into a dirty barn full of you know what, so i've done my best to clean it up. rep. ryan: i think this process stinks. unde

kcci's kim st. onge went to find answers from a local resource officer with the des moines police department. what did you find out? kim: kevin, des moines police did not want to comment on that viral confrontation, but made it clear that the role of their school resource officers is keeping students safe, not disciplining students in the classroom. officer mike moody patrols the crowded roosevelt high school halls monday through friday. >> there's really no average day . every day is different. kim: one of his main duties as the school resource officer is building trust with students. >> how ya doing? good? kim: he's also there to break up fights and deal with students who bring drugs or weapons to school among other crimes. but teachers are responsible for handling behavioral issues in the classroom. things get completely out of hand then yes, i'll get involved then. kim: moody says he uses the least amount of force necessary to end conflicts and has never , had to physically remove a student from

onge, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. steve: sorenson has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and false reporting to the federal election commission. he has not yet been sentenced in that case. so could this impact the legitimacy of the iowa caucuses? >> when people have a list of gripes about the iowa caucuses, this particiular issue of the sorenson case and the question of disclosure or lack thereof campaign payments, that's fairly small beans. steve: kcci political analyst dennis goldford, believes the incorrect vote count by the republicans in 2012 is a bigger issue than the hidden payments to sorenson. stacey: pleasant hill police hope security camera pictures help them track down suspected car thieves. one of the suspects was caught on security video. he was seen october 20 using a stolen credit card at local convenience stores. stolen truck. the other suspects were caught on security camera hours later at the walmart on southeast 14th trying to use more of the credit cards taken from the stolen truck. if you c
