kcci's kim st. onge is in studio to explain. will be here in des moines for the next several weekends, competing in a tournament with a prize worth nearly $200,000. teams of five took up nearly every lane at the merle hay mall bowling alley. this is the 99th annual iowa state bowling tournament. the tourney travels across the state. this year, des moines won the bid to host. bowlers will compete in teams of five, doubles and singles. over the next 14 weekends, some 200 teams with the highest scores will split the $186,000 prize. with 75% of the bowlers being out-of-towners, des moines city officials expect local hotels and restaurants to see a boom in business. team captain for bohica, shannon stolba has been bowling since he was three. and he has bowled two perfect scores. he says this tournament is all about being with friends. shannon: if we bowl good, then we bowl good. if we don't, i guess it's a story of we came up here, had a good time, got away from the hometown. kim: the winner of the tournament will be announced in may

kcci's rose heaphy has more. rose: democratic caucus goers had to move to the parking lot to make room at perkins elementary school. precinct coordinators say it was record turnout with more than 600 people attending. >> i'm pleased that we had such a turnout. this election is more important than i think a lot of the other ones were because it is so close. rose: the crowd stayed outside until about 8:00 bundled up in p.m. coats and hats. >> well we came out for awhile and then we got too cold and i thought i'm going back in. i have to. rose: once everyone was registered they squeezed back inside packed in shoulder to shoulder. >> but they're making it work. it's a tough situation but they're doing what they have to get the job done. rose: people said having the big crowds was a good problem to have. >> it matters. right now i think it matters a lot. rose: in des moines, rose heaphy eric: more caucus night coverage ahead at one of the cool perks of this place is you can eat as much cereal as you want. it's like i'

elizabeth: first on kcci. racist chants? kcci's ryan smith reports students at perry high school feel threatened after a basketball game this week. ryan s.: nearly half of the student population here is minority, much of that is hispanic. that diversity is a point of pride for students faculty and staff within these hallways. but recently became the target of a derogatory basketball chant. the sixth man can swing a team's momentum toward victory. last night perry versus dallas >> unfortunately at times things escalate and it goes from simple cheers and chants to more personal. ryan s.: in the second half dcg students reportedly tapped into a presidential candidate's controversial stance on immigration. >> they are bringing crime. ryan s.: to intimidate a team players. >> they repeated trump, trump, trump. >> i heard trump, trump, trump. ryan s.: principal dan marburger says dcg school officials cut but it took a harsh toll on his students. >> many of these kids were born here in dallas county and they just happen to be minor

kcci's emmy victor reports. emmy: this car is the tragic aftermath of an accident on saturday outside fort dodge. six passengers inside but only one was buckled up. >> the lesson learned out of this is to always wear seatbelts. they are lifesavers. it only takes a few moments to put them on and they work well. emmy: the fire department says that the group of siblings were returning from a visit out of town. investigators report that the car swerved off this straight road, flipped over at least two times ejecting several , passengers. >> one person was pinned under emmy: that person who did not survive was 13-year-old duane touney. duane touney was an eighth grader at st. edmond's catholic school. he was tremendously involved. he played football, a small, basketball, ran track and sang in the choir. >> it's a little quieter today in the middle. emmy: president mary gibbs says that emotional support at the parish started on sunday and will continue throughout the week. >> we had priests available counselors availa

kcci's laura terrell has more. laura: white out conditions left highway 20 on the way to fort dodge. >> we had a few cars that were slowing down because of the ice and wind and the blowing wind conditions and were stopped. a semi actually came up and struck a vehicle and the semi then got stuck. laura: the jackknifed semi caused 40 to 50 drivers to be stuck at a standstill for up to two hours. drivers like tristan obe. the 40 mile and hour wind was so loud we could barely hear him as we talked. the howling wind and slick spots were so bad even our news car got stuck. >> i couldn't see two feet in front of my car. laura: the dot eventually shut down i-35 from ames to clear lake forcing drivers to take dangerous back road detours. >> and on the back roads there were huge drifts about three feet high and if you weren't going 40 miles and hour you weren't going to get through them. laura: state patrol says the best thing to do it just stay home if you can. >> if you go out you are going to risk your life. you are going

kcci's kim st. onge is live in the drake neighborhood to show us how the des moines water doesn't happen here. kim: older homes built before 1950 like some of these in the drake neighborhood are the most likely to still be using lead pipes. but, des moines water works says the type of pipe isn't the problem. contaminated lead pipes are causing hundreds of flint residents to drink only bottled water, after city officials switched water sources. here in the greater des moines area, less than 10% of homes have lead pipes. des moines water works ceo bill stowe says water that feeds to your faucet is lead free, regardless of the type of pipe. that's because the city spends $100,000 every year on a chemical that prevents the lead from seeping into our drinking water. stowe says flint made the mistake of not putting that chemical in its water. >> we're in the public health business and you start talking about cutting costs or changing source waters, that's a radical people's public health. kim: stowe says

this is kcci 8 news this morning. with eric hanson, elizabeth klinge, meteorologist kurtis gertz, and right-now coverage elizabeth: welcome back. dozens of crashes and spinouts on interstate 90 in ohio wednesday. several injuries were reported and all lanes of the interstate were closed because the ice and snow made it too dangerous for drivers. eric: a scary moment for a driver in canada. a truck fell into a giant sinkhole and ended in the freezing cold water inside it. a scary situation. the men in the truck were rescued by city workers and were very cold but were ok. freezing cold temperatures caused a water main to break which formed the sinkhole. these types of things happen this time of year and this morning it is really chilly. metinka: it is downright cold but at least it's not snowing in des moines just yet. it is still up near bismarck all tracking to the southeast. it is set to arrive in northwest iowa by later this afternoon. in des moines, a couple of you don't have much wind but it's enough of a breeze t

this is kcci 8 news at noon. >> that truly blessed young man. near the opportunity to do this to my hometown. mollie: more help is on the way for flint, michigan residents who's water has been undrinkable for months. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. to add insult to injury, a new study shows flint residents were paying the highest rates in the nation for that toxic water. however work to fix the problem of corroded lead pipes seems to have hit a political snag. michigan's governor and the mayor of flint say they have plans to deal with the pipes causing the dangerous tap water. but their plans are different. removed right away but governor rick snyder is backing a plan to coat the pipes with a protective film instead of removing them and then follow up with an infrastructure study to see if any of the pipes needed to be removed. in the meantime hundreds of residents continue to deal with excessive sweating, fatigue and severe headaches, all symptoms of exposure to high amounts of lead. experts say this all means that flint residents wil
