kcrg t-v nine's katie wiedemann joins us live from dubuque. katie, what do parents not like about this book? one parent says the book normalizes things like illegal drug use and casual sex. now she's asking the school district to find an alternative. jodi lockwood's son is senior at dubuque hempstead high school. his literature teacher assigned students to read the book this semester. it's been part of that class's curriculum for the past decade. last week she and several other parents came to the school board requesting the district to reconsider the book be mandated formed a review committee. that group will read the book and consider the parent's request. that committee includes several high school teachers, three hempstead students, librarians and some parents. lockwood talked about why she believes perks of being a wallflower sends mixed messages to students. "we're trying to encourage kids to make healthy choices and then on the other hand we're distributing literature that glorifies unhealthy choices. " lockwood says the biggest problem

kcrg-tv9's dave franzman joins us now. dave, you spoke to some brand new police academy graduates today in cedar rapids. how are they reacting to the ambush of those two officers in des moines? there's the sense of shock that people statewide felt but also a determination not to let fears overwhelm their desire to serve. this particular police class, 14 in all, have taken their training during some of the most turbulent and dangerous times for officers during the new officers were in training, 74 officers died in the line of duty. that's many more than last year. commanders noted this particular class began just one day after five officers were gunned down in dallas. they graduate just days after the tragic shootings of two officers in des moines. during training, they were asked if such events had any giving second thoughts to a career in law recruits from all the agencies and the departments they still made the commitment and are dedicated to come on" several speakers told the new officers not to view everyone you meet a

fr this is kcrg-tv9 news at midday. right now, a church in west des moines is packed with people remembering a fallen police officer. this is a live look at the funeral for des moines police sergeant anthony beminio at lutheran church of hope in west des moines. police say a man shot and killed sergeant beminio last wednesday morning while he from iowa city west high school in 1996 -- where he won a state titles as a football player and wrestler. the other killed in that attack was urbandale officer justin martin. his visitation is today from 4 to 8 p-m at the south calhoun middle school in his hometown of rockwell city. martin's funeral is tomorrow at 11:40 a-m. we will cover that service live on kcrg 9.2 and now shining blue lights in honor of the fallen officers. project blue light iowa handed out about 3,000 light bulbs yesterday. the blue light symbolizes support for law enforcement. the bulbs were free and the organization handed them out at the des moines police department. organizers hope people keep using the b

you're watching kcrg-tv9. now, from your 24 hour news source, this is kcrg-tv9 news at 10 . developers behind a proposed casino in downtown cedar rapids have taken another step in their bid for a gaming license. wild rose entertainment has partnered with a nonprofit that would hold the state gaming lic portion of revenue to linn county. wild rose wants to build a 40-million dollar boutique casino in downtown cedar rapids. it would go up in an area across from the doubletree hotel. the casino would be much smaller than the previous plan that the state gaming and racing commission rejected two years ago. back then, the commissioners believed a cedar rapids casino would cannibalize too much revenue from other casinos in eastern iowa. forrest, state law requires this nonprofit partnership? casinos in iowa have to have that nonprofit partner. it'll not only hand out a cut of the gaming revenue, but hold the gambling license. wild rose has joined forces with the newly-formed seven-member board, cedar river alliance for gaming or crag. members say, a green light from the state, wil
