this is lotta's fountain here behind me on kearney and market and a ceremony is going on as it does every year to commemorate this event. this fountain served as a meeting point during the chaos of that day in 1906. here's some footage from that period devastating fires breaking out after the earthquake destroying over 80% of san francisco. around 3,000 people were killed in the quake and its aftermath. it's remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in history of the united states. >> we need to remember this. we need to be prepared. and this is all about remembering our great history and singing our beautiful songs and just keeping it alive. >> reporter: after the ceremony here on market street, the commemoration moves to the mission where two fire hydrants will be painted. this is video from last year's gilding. since water mains were broken during the earthquake, these were some of the few working hydrants at the time. they are credited with saving much of the city. now, after those two events, the bloody mary breakfast going on at lefty o'doul's an geary street organized by the
