i'm su keenan. this is bloomberg. a very busy weekend for a trade as the treasury secretary steven mnuchin signaled the u.s. and china are inching closer to a trade deal as the inf spring meetings wrapped up in washington. let's get some help breaking it down. the takeaways from rob krasner and kathleen hays. rob, we will start with you in terms of where we are at with this creeping ever closer to a trade deal. what did mnuchin say and what is the take away? >> one of the interesting things stephen mnuchin said was the u.s. was willing to be subject to enforcement by china once it strikes a trade deal, just as the u.s. has insisted china would be subject to enforcement of the u.s. as well. that seemed more of a way or the highway one-way street that i think some been the trump administration might want. it is unclear when the next round of physical talks will be between the u.s. and china, but this did not sound optimistic. one question would be is if mnuchin is overruled by trump or other members of the administratio

i'm su keenan. this is bloomberg. the indonesian president is set to claim a second term with unofficial counts showing him taking a significantly. his arrival is already disputing the result, claiming an internal exit poll showing he has more than 55% of the vote. our chief correspondent is covering the election in jakarta. feels like a replay of five years ago. what happens from here? >> from here it is about healing the country. we talked about how the country has been divided because of religious issues. right now the priority is to get everybody together to be you -- to be united. that is the message he sent to the country when he spoke after the election during the vote count. he said he wants the country to come together and it is time for healing and time to grow the country. we talked about how he is leading in the quick count. just to give you an overview of where we are right now, about 95% of the quick count has been counted. counted. he is leading with a margin of about 10%. up to a 16% lead. is aer you l

i am su keenan. the u.s.re said to be scheduling two more rounds of trade talks with a possible signing as early as the end of may. sources say trade representative robert lighthizer in trade secretary steven mnuchin plan to be in beijing on april 9. the chinese vice premier is flying to washington the following week. trade talks between the two biggest economies have been going on for nine months. reports from north korea say kim jong-un supervised the test firings of what's being described as a new type of tactical guided weapon. this is a move some see as provocation. kcna does not refer to the weapon as a nuclear missile, so the test may not scuttle the summit with president trump. the u.s. wants more evidence that kim would give up his nukes before agreeing to more talks. in a related matter, the trump administration has halted recent government practices of disclosing the size of the u.s. new your weapons stockpile. president obama had declassified for the first time the history of u.s. weapons dating b

i'm su keenan. this is bloomberg. china consumer inflation surging in march on rising food prices, with prices rebounding. this asre anticipating foreshadowing all sorts of bad things for the chinese economy. david: a good thing we are hanging by the fingernails. let's bring in our china correspondent, tom mackenzie, and out of washington, our guest. tom, let's start with you. recap the numbers. absolutely. no major surprises, as you said, 2.3% of a pickup in march for consumer prices, in line with the forecast, above the february number. food prices a major component. they picked up quite strongly, the result of a cull of hogs with an infection of african swine that continues to roll through the country. that is having an impact and has played into consumer price inflation. prices in line with expectations, 0.4%, and the forecast was up from 0.1% in february. there was an increase in commodity prices. of course, this is inconsequential for corporate and their ability to pay down debt, but one group says they are not

i'm su keenan with the first word headlines. first official gauge of china's manufacturing sector fell in april, signaling the economic stabilization in the fourth quarter remains fragile. atufacturing pmi came in 50.1 which shows an overall expansion by the slimmest of margins. it is down from 50.5 in march. economists had expected the level to stay the same. south korea meanwhile issuing more signs of a slowdown. industrial production numbers fell more than expected in march without put down 2.8% compared with forecasts of a decline of just 1%. however, business confidence is improving from a, rising to 77 from a 76 as the proportion of companies complaining about weak domestic demand declined slightly. to the imf now. inflation in iran could reach 50% if the u.s. titans oil sanctions on the economy. last week the trump administration says it will end sanction waivers granted to a handful of countries who are buying iranian oil to reduce the islamic republic influence in the middle east. iran was already dealing with a weakeni

i'm su keenan. this is bloomberg. trade debited headlines on the weekend with treasury secretary steven mnuchin signaling u.s. and china are inching ever closer to a trade deal. say?what did steve mnuchin do we have any more specifics about how closely we are creeping to an eventual deal? ros: one thing he said is when the sides will get back together and talk. there were two weeks of discussions first in beijing and then in washington a few weeks ago. talked also by phone and teleconference last week but we do not know when they will get together again. so, it did seem that mnuchin's comments about the u.s. being open to penalty should it break the terms of any deal it struck was a pretty big step forward because for the u.s. to concede that enforcement could be a two-way street, i think this is a bit of a breakthrough. we will have to see where that goes. it is certainly always possible that mnuchin could be contradicted by president trump or could be blindsided a little bit by the more hawkish wing of the white hou

su keenan joins us with more. are investors assessing whether the economy and corporate earnings will continue to support this equity bull run? su: we are starting to see it play out. the mixed of earnings last week drove us to an all-time record for the s&p and nasdaq. what we saw in this latest session is the s&p and nasdaq again expand above those levels. let's go to the market snapshot because we did see far less of a gain and a much more tentative market. what we have got is the s&p financials in the lead. that was the biggest gainer. the s&p 500 up about 1%. direction,ooking for holding around $63 on some unnerving moves by the president, announcing he had directly spoken with opec. again, you got the market sort of on hold as we wait for the fed on wednesday to announce its latest move on interest rate decisions. they are not expected to raise rates. and you've got the u.s. trade talks with china about to resume in beijing. let's take a look at some of the big movers. intel down for the fifth straight day.
