have felt going into this election to discuss some of the issues i'm joined by lisa keen and dr lisa keenan she's a political lecturer in political science from trinity college dublin. lisa tell me what what are we what are we witnessing here in relation to the shifting of the seismic plates in irish politics so i think what we're really seeing is the continuation of a move away from being a gal and you know full time which we have already seen for quite a long time actually so if we go back to say 2002 general election we saw that combined the vote total for those 2 parties they received about 67 percent just over 65 percent if we phosphor to 2016 what we see is that they get just below 50 percent of the combined vote with those 2 political parties and actually in 2016 what we saw was about a 3rd of people who cost their votes for independence or for the smaller little parties so while the surgeon support her shin pain is i think surprising certainly the extent of it is it's not particularly shocking i think we can see it as more of a continuation of this trend and i think the figures that
