keir simmons has been digging into this troubling story indeed. keir? >> let's look at the security camera foot aage shone by globo. i'm told it shows three angles. someone of a swimmer entering a restro restroom, an attendant emerges and notices damage then it seems to show swimmers sitting on the curb apparently talking to gas station security then they leave and try to get a taxi. so detectives here think it raises questions about the stories that have been put forward by ryan lochte and his teammates. initially he said he was held up by people pretending to be police then he told matt lawer that he had pulled up at a gas station that they'd gone to the bathroom and the incident unfolded from there and that is how we get to this stage now, andrea, where he is back home watching events unfold while three u.s. gold medalists are here in brazil in limbo, two being pulled from a plane. this has the potential to be a diplomatic incident because as you know things like this can turn into a serious row between two countries. and you can imagine behind the s

keir simmons, what are sources there saying about how the athletes' robbery story is checking out? >> thomas, it's not so much sources as police here openly questioning it. now we have that security camera video which is obviously open to interpretation as all of that material is but i have seen it frame by frame. there you can see one, two, three and there will be a fourth swimmer, it looks like the swimmers, coming out from a bathroom, you can see the attendants from the gas station looking, something has happened it appears then the video moves to the gas station, swimmers try to get into a taxi on the left, they can't. they get into the taxi on the right. if they keep playing it you will see a man approaches once they're inside and he has his arm held out. is he holding a weapon? maybe he is. hard to tell. the swimmers get out of the taxi, some have their arms up and some action takes place off camera. there is another scene where they are sitting on the curb side and one producer thinks they can see one of the swimmers get a wallet out and pay money. what the police are saying

nbc's keir simmons, joins me now from rio. so much going on this morning. talk to us first about discrepancies and what ryan lochte is saying now to nbc. >> reporter: well, you know, chris, let me just go first to news that we are hearing emerging in the past, you know, half hour, 20 minutes. multiple media organizations, including reuters, are telling -- being told by brazilian officials and also our own gadi schwartz, being told by a brazilian official source, that this is what the brazilian police think happened. they think at a gas station, a men's room, a bathroom was damaged in some way, that there was then some kind of an altercation with a security guard. police were called. the police did not arrive. apparently, according to this reporting, there was a row, if you like, and is at some stage, it was agreed they would pay for the damage, and the swimmers left. that, of course, very different from the account the swimmers initially gave and even from the account that ryan lochte gave overnight. although he did tell matt lauer that they had stopped at
