we'll get to keir simmons like in just a moment., here's what we are watching at the bottom of the hour. two u.s. bomber planes flew over the korean peninsula following the test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile days earlier. the bombers launched from an airbase if guam alongside south korean and japanese fighter jets there. right now president donald trump the on his way back to washington, d.c. after wrapping up the last day of the g20 summit in hamburg this afternoon. the president did not hold a news conference before taking off. but earlier today, russian president vladimir putin spoke to the media about his face-to-face meeting with trump, saying he thinks president trump believes his denials of russia meddling in the 2016 election. we will send it back to keir simmons at the site of the g20 summit. before we do that we will show you some of what kir has been doing covering anti-global summit, protesters clashed with police. here's a little taste of kir's reporting. take a look. >> reporter: they have set fire to

let's go right now to nbc's keir simmons who has more on what russian president vladimir putin is saying after this face-to-face meeting with president trump. are we getting the same readout of the meeting from both sides, keir? >> we were in the room with president putin for that news conferen conference. yesterday we were covering the riots. look, president putin was asked again and again about that meeting with president trump and specifically how president trump reacted to president putin telling him that russia did not intervene in the u.s. elections. president putin said trump asked a lot of questions on the subject. i was able to answer all those questions. i think he took this into consideration and agreed. but in fact how he reacted to this, ask him. nbc news pressed him further and said just tell us what exactly it was that president trump said. president putin said, you know, we also talked about the conversation that the president of russia had had with president obama previously. they actually had that conversation as well, president putin and president trump, but president

keir simmons has been in the thick of it and still is. keir, what's going on?> reporter: for the last hour now, we have seen these water cannon in almost constant use. you can see there that they are firing on protesters who built a barricade across the street here in the foregrounds. if i could get the camera man to go this way, they have set some of these barricades on fire so as night falls here, this is becoming a pitch battle, really, between riot police and large numbers of protesters and demonstrators. you have to say, katy, riots are in this stage in this german city where they are trying to hold the g-20. managing to, in most -- sorry, miguel caught on that barrier. they are managing due to mostly. we have seen official convoys attacked by protesters. we don't think there were delegates from the g-20 inside and we have seen them prevented from moving. so, we are just getting closer now to give you a better view of this -- this confrontation. the police just seem to be holding the line. as you can see, protesters throwing anything they can find, mostly

we'll get keir simmons back. i want to move over to kelly o'donnell who is now in a different area probably about a mile and a half or two miles from where keir is. and she's been covering what is actually happening at the g-20 including the very long meeting between president putin and president trump. kelly. >> reporter: and now that it is evening here in hamburg, behind me is the concert hall, the philharmonic hall where we have the concert for as part of the entertainment concluding today's full day of meetings with all of the g-20 representatives. and there is now a dinner going on at that location. so that is where we are right now in terms of the g-20's official schedule and calendar. the big news today, a surprisingly lengthy meeting between president trump and putin. on the schedule we were told to expect to last 30 minutes. it ran two hours and 16 minutes. and from what we learned from secretary tillerson, it was tillerson and the two presidents and sergey lavrov in the room. and tillerson came a short t

nbc's keir simmons starting us off from hamburg, germany. keir, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, savannah. right now there are still police on the streets of hamburg. at least 15 police officers were injured today, 3 taken to the hospital. a violent backdrop to the g-20 meeting. and there could be further disturbances with 100,000 protesters expected over the next two days. tonight chaos and violence in hamburg. as you can see, there are now clashes between protesters and police. protesters in black masks throwing bottles and rocks. police in riot gear using smoke bombs, pepper spray and water cannons to disperse the crowd. there you can see one of the smoke bombs that has gone off in the middle of this crowd now. now, further back, the german riot police are lined up, moving in to cordon off this anti-g-20 protest. we are right in the center of it. and they are clearly determined, the german authorities, to prevent -- to prevent these protesters from even staying here. 12,000 people showed up to the welcome 2 hell protest just hours

nbc's keir simmons in moscow. thanks so much. joining me now is nieles. good to see you both.tough week for jeff sessions. first the president's "new york times" interview where he said he was thegeneral were recusing himself on russia and then "the washington post" report that he allegedly discussed these campaign-related matter with the russian ambassador, according to intercepts which is contrary to what he said. you think he's going to survive this. >> it's very questionable, i think, at this point. jeff sessions was obviously skating on rather thin ice even before this latest revelation. i think the key point about this actually extends beyond sessions himself. he now is at least the third person very close to donald trump who has had to correct the record more than once about contact between himself and the people connected with russia. that's also happened with jared kushner. it's also happened, obviously, with donald trump jr. so, this gets to the point that there's -- that the trump administration or people close to the president can't quite get their stories straight

i want to take you to moscow where nbc's keir simmons stands by. he just wrapped an exclusive interview with that russian lawyer who is at the center of this controversy. keir, what did she tell you? >> reporter: well, she tells an at times confusing and fascinating story of the way that she was -- she got a call. now, she was talking to people, friends, she says, acquaintances, telling them that she wanted to try to reach out to powerful people in the u.s. and saying that she had questions about particular act, u.s. legislation, and that she also maybe had some information about the clinton campaign. she says that then fast forward, she says she got a phone call from someone, she doesn't know who that was, telling her to come to trump tower. when she got there, she was met she says by a man she now knows to be a man called robert goldstone, a publicist. then she says he took her upstairs to meet with donald trump jr. and also in the room jared kushner and paul manafort. she didn't know at the time who they were and she says, for example, one of th

keir simmons now. in talking about the precarious position that the president is in considering all of the things that are on the table in this conversation when it comes to president putin, it's hard to understand how he will approach this going forward not only speaking of the position that he's in with poland and eastern europe, but also considering russia's role in the u.s. elections. how much is riding on this conversation and considering russia's role in syria as well and speaking to what christopher dickey just touched on? >> reporter: well, a lot is riding on the meeting with president putin. the optics will be crucial and what actually comes out of it will be very important. let's just mention that president trump did talk about russia as destabilizing. that is a crucial criticism. so while he is not fully criticizing russia for intervention in the u.s. elections, he did seem prepared to criticize russia in other ways. so the question then is what will he say to president putin when he sees th

nbc's keir simmons was in the middle it and we'll get to him. for a time the protests overshadowed the other dramatic news. we saw two versions of donald trump today. in a scripted address in warsaw, he sought to talk about the commitment to nato partners and offered his toughest language to date about russia. >> to those who would criticize our tough stance, i would point out that the united states has demonstrated not merely with words, but with its actions that we stand firmly behind article 5, the mutual defense commitment. we urge russia to cease its destabilizing activities in ukraine and elsewhere and its support for hostile regimes including syria and iran. and to instead join the community of responsible nations in our fight against common enemies and a defense of civilization itself. there is nothing like our community of nations. the world has never known anything like our community of nations. >> it seemed during the delivery of the speech that donald trump was largely on message. however, hours later unscripted donald trump hedged o

and keir simmons, what's it like on the ground like now and what, if any, are the demonstrations and protesters affecting the summit? >> reporter: there are large numbers of police out on the streets, and you can see a number of police behind me, and then water cannons have been used against the protesters, and in that tower that is the place where leaders are meeting for the g20. as you can see right now, ayman, it's fun costumes and dancing, and the aim is to try and disrupt the meeting because what these protesters are saying is they are opposed to the g20 and world leaders getting together. yesterday there were 111 police officers injured, and 23 arrests. that's a very low number given the scene we saw. today we are told ten parked cars were vandalized including two police cars, and there are groups and individuals here making their point heard. it's a different protests, and of course, one group, is, we understand, aiming to try and get near the place where president trump is staying. >> live in germany. thank you. >>> and so much anticipation has built upon today's meeting with

. >> keir simmons live from moscow. thank you. by the way, you heard keir reference that lengthy interview. much more tonight on nbc "nightly news" with lester holt. >>> i want to go to kristen welekr over at the white house. giving very different recollections of that meeting back in june. don jr. is out talking about the e-mail story from overnight in "new york times." walk us through some new pieces of the puzzle here. >> donald trump jr. is digging in not surprisingly. let's get to some of the developments by "new york times" reporting overnight. i think this critical piece before the meeting that you all talked about. mr. trump was informed in an e-mail that the material was part of a russian government effort to aid his father's candidacy. this is really the first time that we are learning about someone within president trump's then campaign's inner circle. not only meeting with the russians, but being given information that pointed to the russian government. trying to interfere. and intervene in the 2016 race. now, part of t

nbc's keir simmons joins us now to talk more about this exclusive interview. did the foreign minister seem to be defending president trump? because by my estimation there seemed to be a permasmirk on his face the whole darn time? >>eporter: that's not the way sergei lavrov would character it but i do think straight forwardly the russian government, kremlin thinks it is in their interest to try to support president trump as far as possible. let me give you an example. if you look actually in detail after that g-20 meeting and what was said, sergei lavrov initially talks about president putin -- president trump confronting president putin with the questions of russian meddling allegations in the u.s. elections and what sergei lavrov says is president trump mepgsed it. then later on president putin starts to talk about it as president trump asking question after question and searching in the two-hour meeting that they had. i asked sergei lavrov in the interview whether in fact russia had kind of changed the story to try to help president trump and he denied that

nbc's keir simmons is live in hamburg, germany, ahead of the g20.ow you've been talking to folks at the kremlin. what are you learning about this upcoming meeting between trump and putin? >> reporter: well, not very much honestly. kremlin official echoing the white house saying not much has been decided yet. we don't know. we know it will be on friday. we don't know when on friday, how it will take place, how formal it will be, how long it will be. that kremlin official telling me the two presidents will talk for as long as they need to. now, when you think about that statement, it is pitch perfect in terms of what the russians would like this meeting to be about because one of their key objectives is quite simply to have their president be seen on an equal footing to the american president. president putin will have met with president xi of china before they come here, so just, for example, if you take the north korean situation that you have been talking about, president putin will go in, if that is an item for discussion when the two presidents m

keir simmons joining us with more on that. let's start with that top line out of this.alk us through how this interview went and what stood out to you. >> that's right. hallie, you and i were at the g-20 and we both ran into each other when we were attending president putin's news conference. we know how informal that gathering may be. the foreign minister has a point. maybe the two leaders ran across each other and they interacted on a number of other occasions. the point is, though, that we don't know. and you can bet that the russians know exactly how many times there were exchanges between president trump and president putin and, yet, and yet in this interview as you'll hear lav rauv says it happened three times. >> we know about president trump and president putin meeting three times. they met at the dinner -- >> maybe they met -- >> photographed shaking hands. that's my question. did they meet other times in the hallways? other times they met? >> when you're brought by your parents to kindergarten, do you mix with the people who are waiting in the same room to sta
