you have congressman keith ellison, for example, congresswoman sandra levin, as well, who are concerned about cuts to federal employees in addition to an exclusion of the federal unemployment benefits being extended as part of the reason they are uncertain regarding this deal. where do you stand? >> well, tamron, this deal is far from perfect. it's certainly not what i would have written or what my democratic colleagues would have written, but it is a small and positive step forward. because it will relieve part of that sequester, which has been a drag on the economy, led to huge numbers of federal government furloughs, and is eating away at very important investments in education, in medical research, in places like the national institutes of health, other investments that are important for the economy to grow. we are very disappointed that the republicans have refused to even allow us to have a vote on extending for at least three months the unemployment compensation. in fact, i just came from the floor of the house a little while ago, where congressman levin and i were asking republi

minnesota congressman keith ellison made a heated case to raise the minimum wage. >> inequality, substandard pay, stagnation is wrong oh in this country that proclaims itself to be the land of opportunity. if we are going to call ourselves the land of opportunity, there have got to be some opportunity. we in congress will try to raise the minimum wage. we've got opponents on the other side of the aisle who say there shouldn't be no minimum wage. so we are in difficulty fighting these guys. >> and that is the bottom line. there are folks on the other side that want to get rid of the minimum wage. abolish it. and make no mistake, it's impossible to live off the federal minimum wage. if you make $7.25 an hour, no doubt, it's an entry-level pay scale, no question about it. you're not going to be there forever. but it means you make about $15,000 a year. and what if you're part-time. that gets cut. factor in the average rent of $865 a month. and it's already impossible to survive. it all goes back to the vulture chart, which i have talked about on this program time and time again. this is america
