let's go live to our olympic expert, keith jones at olympic park. a lot of action there tonight. >> snowboarding big air is a crazy, brand-new event to the winter olympics. look at the video. it involves a snowboarding going down a 160-foot ramp, getting big air and pulling off tricks. we have three athletes in the finds including red girard. it was kyle mack who jumped to a silver. a.j. almost died four months ago. he was in a coma after a complication from shoulder surgery. he had to relearn reading and writing. now he is competing in the olympics. another new jersey native competing in the four-man bobsled event. the other two american sleds are now in tenth place. we have been walking around this olympic park, which is busy, just two days out of the closing ceremony. we found interesting people. we talked with many of them. none compares to the one man we will show new 20 minutes and his knight rider action figure. now, we are live here in south korea, keith jones. >> i have seen your facebook page on this. can't wait to see the story. remember,

we sent nbc 10's keith jones to south korea to cover all of the olympic action for you. he joins us tonight from the olympic village tonight. >> reporter: today it is 1:00 in the afternoon in south korea. the opening ceremony was last night, but the energy out here was electric. that is called the oval. that is for figure skating events and some of the speed skating events will take place. if you zoom on out, you will see two big businesses. samsung so the right and to the left is the hockey center. this is where the u.s. team will take on russia. while the opening ceremony took place right now, this place is clearly still buzzing. the show began in the sky at the pyeongchang, south korea welcoming the world with a spectacular display. down on the floor a mixture of high-tech drummers and dancers. in the vip a scene of historic diplomacy. u.s. vice president mike pence sat one row away but didn't interact with the north koreans. the stars and stripes led the largest olympic delegation ever. you can spot local athletes. athletes from russia wore grey and white this year.

we sent keith jones, a 7,000-mile trip and tonight he is 14 hours ahead of us. joining us live at the olympic park. hi, keith. >> reporter: it is 1:00 in the afternoon on a wednesday, believe it or not. we are at one of two sites. this is olympic park. i want to show you around just a little bit. super store that just opened today. olympic mascots in the front. workers wearing red. a lot of security out. a lot of the workers front and center right here. just behind them, they are selling cars here. to the right of that, selling electronics. showing you one of the areas that hockey. 90 miles from a capital named seoul there, is heart. that is when pyeongchang will soon watch a record number of events and new sports including snowboarding big air, crazy 14 story jump and speed skating starts mayhem on ice. 2800 athletes competing from 90 countries. notably absent nhl players for the first time since 1994 elected not to participate. paving the way for four legal athletes. more than a dozen members of usa team calling the philadelphia area home. i understand it was

keith jones us live from olympic park. tell us more about him, keith. >> reporter: yeah, morning. he has no fear. none of these lugers, bobsledders or skeleton athletes have any fear at all. they're sliding on the ice at nearly 90 miles per hour. he's a forth washington native. take look at this video. he's posted a lot of stuff to social media. it's really interesting stuff, too, it doesn't surprise you he's doing the luge. it's just the beginning of his extreme sports. skiing, skateboarding to acrobats and even cliff jumping. >> they're kind of all extreme sports. they're different. a lot of people just stick to, like, the basics as i would refer to them, baseball, soccer, basketball, stuff like that. i think that's what drove me to the luge. >> reporter: he made this video about a month ago. maybe he'll be lucky enough to compete in philly this may. he is a talented guy. he's got that body type for it, too. i'm long and lanky and lean. i tried that course, no good. you got to be like oh, a football half back or something, maybe a guy that returned kicks in college in the pros.

now let's go to keith jones who's live in pyeongchang covering the olympic games for us. >> keith, aennsylvania athlete is about to take the icy stage. tell us more about that. >> reporter: dray, tracy, it's taking place right here behind me in pyeongchang that the sliding center up there in the mountains. i can confirm that pennsylvania's summer britcher will be competing in just a bit. i can confirm a bit about the winds, too. it is freezing here. we've been following summer since august. we caught up with here during training at lake placid, new jersey. her journey started in 2007. britcher impressed them even at 11 years old. now she's at her second olympic games and feeling even more confident. >> sitting down the tracks at my first olympics in sochi i don't know if i'd ever been more scared in my life. i'm pretty excited and not so much nervous this time around. so hopefully there'll be a little less hair loss going on. >> reporter: and back live right now, she competes tonight and tomorrow as well. because right now it is 8:45 at night in south korea. we're 14 hours ahead. it'
