we're trying to figure out where is keith kellogg, where is steve witkoff? obviously, there was the prisoner release and i think forthcoming exchange last night. do you see kind of a clear strategic pathway from this administration, and does it differ from maybe what we saw at various states in the first term? >> well, i do actually. the first term was about pulling america back. so 2017, after two terms of president obama and two terms of president bush, before that, america first meant pulling america back and focusing on things at home. in this second term of president trump, america first seems to be rebuilding american strength. it is taking a very assertive role in the world, whether it is with respect to ending the war in ukraine. so that's stopping putin there, ending the war in the middle east and putting pressure on hamas and iran. whether it is claiming that we need to do more about panama canal and greenland, it is a very assertive and america first strength stance coming from a second term. >> last night, the president, we were talking about the

and this is why i think this comment around elections from keith kellogg, the russia ukraine envoy ofrump's administration is interesting because he's saying hold elections. now we know that ukraine has put off elections. they're not allowed under the constitution during a time of martial law. plus the not insignificant logistical hurdles right, of 20% of the country being occupied, 7 million or 6 million citizens living outside the country. but but russia has said that it believes that it that these talks would be illegitimate if they involved president zelenskyy, because they have continued to maintain that they don't have beef with the ukrainian people, simply what they call the kyiv regime. and he has ruled out talks in decree with putin. so they're sort of making this complex legal argument. but i think for ukraine, this looks possibly like the trump administration is trying to offer a carrot to russia through this call for elections. and that has certainly raised some nerves in kyiv. >> how, i mean, is zelenskyy's sort of team reacting because there is this narrative, isn't ther

he is tasked keith kellogg to, as his special representative, to work out the details.in is not giving any indication that he really wants particularly to solve this. in fact, he frequently says, well, zelenskyy, you know, president of ukraine isn't really a legitimate leader anyway, so he wouldn't be able to sign any documents. and then but then you have president zelenskyy saying, i'm ready to talk. and he has actually brought forward some ideas, uh, especially with the rare earth metals that president trump is talking about. maybe we can chat about that too. but i think zelenskyy is ready to talk. but the details are very tough. >> yeah. and yes, and i do want to talk about that. let's get into the the rare earth metals and kind of how that might be a factor in all of this. >> yeah. well president trump has brought it up. and as we've known for quite a long time, ukraine has a very large stash of these, what are called rare earth metals and critical metals and things. you know, titanium, et cetera., that are very important for a lot of what we do. you know, computers

there's also expected to be an appearance from the president's new special envoy to ukraine, keith kellogg, who the president said today is also expected to visit kyiv, the ukrainian capital, as early as february 20th. so amidst all of this splashy debut for the new administration in europe, it's really looking like ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy is really feeling the pressure from all sides. now, as we mentioned, he's about to meet with the vice president, a man who in the past has suggested cutting off aid to ukraine completely. that's an even harder line on supporting ukraine than president trump has taken in the past. and the timing for zelenskyy is rough at this moment. president trump just said today on fox news that ukraine may be russian someday. it was a really troubling comment. and, you know, we heard actually, zelenskyy met with the guardian newspaper and said that, you know, ukraine wasn't going to be protected and its security wasn't going to be confirmed without american support, that european powers didn't have enough clout in order to protect ukraine. now, trump h

that is, general keith kellogg is part of that negotiating team. karoline leavitt was asked about that by a reporter in this room. she said he does remain in the administration. it's unclear whether or not he'll actually be on the ground in ukraine. but a lot of questions about what these negotiations are going to look like and how soon we could see president putin in the united states or president trump in moscow. >> and, caitlin, the white house announced the release of another american, this time from a prison in belarus, which, of course, takes its cues directly from the kremlin as well as other prisoners being released. what more can you tell us about this? >> yeah. still questions of what the extent of that trade looks like, who is being traded in in response for that? because typically when we've seen these prisoner swaps happen before, it's either one for 1 or 1 coveted prisoner, high profile prisoner that is exchanged for another hostage. in this situation, obviously with marc fogel last night, he was wrongfully detained in russia. and the

security conference this friday and saturday, the envoy for ukraine for president donald trump, keith kellogg, is likely to present to allies parts of his plan here. but then suddenly we have this flurry of activity involving trump himself, who on friday suggested that he might indeed meet ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. this week. and then zelenskyy's team appear to have moved quite fast to try and get that to happen. and instead they've got this team of, quote, serious people coming to ukraine ahead of the munich security conference. we don't know who they are. i would suggest if they were very serious, he probably would have given us the names, but a lot moving in private here at this point, conversations clearly like that trump had with putin. the kremlin simply haven't even confirmed happened. and so there's clearly a bid to try and get something moving. but the real issue here is quite where ukraine has a place in all these negotiations for the whole biden administration, for the whole three years of the war, they've been front and center of every part of western policy. and no

notably absent from that list of emissaries is trump's actual envoy to ukraine and russia, general keith kellogg, so it's unclear if he's been sidelined or if trump simply forgot to mention him. >> but this is a very significant call. apparently 90 minute call that he had with vladimir putin. and immediately after that call, he had a discussion with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. we are still awaiting the readout of that call, but it is safe to say that the ukrainians are not necessarily going to be thrilled about this conversation that president trump had with president putin, because they want to be involved in every conversation that involves them, especially when it comes to the war. now, all of this is coming as secretary of defense pete hegseth. he was here at nato headquarters in brussels today, meeting with nato and european allies, talking about this very thing, talking about u.s. support or lack thereof for the moment, for ukraine and the future of it. essentially, his message was, look, ukraine, european allies, nato needs to step up even more. they need to carry the bulk of
