our reporter, matt keller, is in san jose with more on the young man accused of terrorizing an african-american roommate. matt? >> yes, this case rocked san jose state. today, the first hearing took place if one of the students face the hate crime charge. the 18-year-old covered his face walking out the hall of justice in san jose this morning. a few minutes before, the suspended san jose state student pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor hate crime and battery champions. beach her and three other white freshmen are accused harassing the 17-year-old black roommate last semester. the prosecution says they used racial slugs, hung a confederate flag in their shared campus house, put a bicycle neck around his neck. he is supportive of the case against the roommates. >> he is a strong young man. he is back in school. he is moving forward with his life. he don't like the spotlight he is under but he understands how important this case is. he is cooperating fully. >> several campus protests were held following the students' arrests as university leadership apologized for the way the situation was happen

our reporter, matt keller, joins us from san francisco international airport. matt, good morning. >> what a nightmare for travelers this week. today is another bad day for cancellations. the last hour we have seen double delays to 530 across the united states and the cancellations numbers are worse. 1,846 flights canceled in the united states today. at sfo 21 flights are canceled, oakland has four departures canceled. san jose, no cancellations but it is early. passengers of jetblue suffered the most because they did not try to fly in and out of the northeast because of a new f.a.a. rule requiring more rest time so passengers are not leaving the bay area for several more days. [ inaudible ] >> there is no way i can be here four days. >> jetblue says they expect to be running at full capacity by this afternoon. some of the worst hit airports are in the midwest. half flights in and out of the cleveland and a third of the flights to and from chicago are canceled. a few dozennor delayed at the bay area airports. that number will increase through the morning. check
