"today in the bay," jay gray, in oklahoma city, he has the latest on the recovery efforts. >> we have heard the whine of chainsaws and the roar of heavy equipment, part of a promise the governor has made to keep searching for survivors as long as possible here overnight, emergency teams continued to search for survivors working through miles of debris in an area leveled by this massive tornado. >> this is not good. >> this is terrible. this is war zone terrible. >> reporter: the violent funnel was more than a mile wide and on the ground for close to an hour. >> when you see a tornado that big, you find a place. you had no choice. it's

i'm jon kelley. >>> i'm laura garcia cannon. >> we begin with breaking news in east bay where the search is on for a gunman that opened fire killing two people. the shooting shut down all northbound lanes for several hours. >> that's where christie smith is and she has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the chp looking for the shooters this morning and so are oakland police after a horrible scene. drivers say they thought there was some sort of backup, lasted for ten minutes. then, they thought maybe there was a ped down on the freeway, because it looked like a man just laying down on interstate 880 near the jackson street on ramp. then, they realized that someone had been shot. the chp tells us two men were traveling in a white portia. they were shot late thursday around 10:35. the driver died in the car. that started with several 911 calls with both a collision and a shooting. investigators weren't sure if this happened on the ramp or the freeway northbound. fre the freeway was closed for hours that the police and chp investigated. >> both agencies responded out. when we got on sce

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live with more. >> reporter: talk about a close call. normally firefighters are called to help others. this time at least three of them who were inside actually had to help themselves, hit the deck and run for cover as bullets shatter the front window where they park their fire trucks inside. the bullets -- this was an exit. the bullets came from the opposite side of the firehouse and may actually hit a house across the street. fortunately, though, no firefighters were hurt in all of this. that happened about 9:00 last night at station 18 on 50th avenue in east oakland. half a mile away, a man was shot and killed in a hail of gunfire over on melrose avenue. he was taken to highland hospital where he died. i'm told the detector system picked up two gun shots fired in the area. no one arrested in th

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in palo alto with more details on this murder investigation. good morning. >> reporter: an international warrant was issued for kevin dahlgren accused of killing a family of four overseas. a czech television station is reporting that he is actually the nephew of the parents that were killed. police in the czech republic released a photo of the 21-year-old who has a facebook page that says he is from palo alto but is living abroad. he was on the run thursday. firefighters went to a home near pr prague and found a couple and their two sons inside. they realized quickly a violent crime had likely been committed. the fire didn't damage the home very much at all. neighbors say he had only been in the area for a few months. police had asked for the public's help in finding dahlgren. then, p

. >>> i'm jon kelley. we have breaking news to tell you about right now. a bizarre scene playing out in the south bay as a van crashes into a san jose hospital. crews at the santa clara valley medical center near the 280 highway, actually, the 280 and highway 17 intersection, "today in the bay's" marla tallez joining us now. what do you see? what can you tell us? >> reporter: from this perspective, we can't show you much. i can tell you that just down the block on baskin avenue is one of the main hospital entrances. that's where we found a mini-van that crashed into the main lobby entrance there. quite a sight to see. there are plenty of emergency crews on scene. right in the main hospital lobby of building m. the van is now parked inside shattering all the glass doors. that includes the police and the sheriff's dep it is. there is a tow truck on scene about to take the mini-van away. we are hearing reports that the van's driver has been detained. we are also hearing that a hospital janitor may have been hurt in this crash. we are waiting to get both confi

"today in the bay's" marla tallez live at the scene where she spoke to neighbors about the arrest and the yard to yard search going in overnight in san jose's cambrian neighborhood. police had this entire park behind us. this is doerr park. as you mentioned in the cambrian district. their suspect has been identified as 20-year-old peter bruneto of san jose. he was found inside the park in the pool area after officers did a yard to yard search. he is now in the santa clara county jail. the search for him started soon after police got a 911 call that came in about 1:15 for a report of a stabbing. they arrived to find four people left at what had been a small birthday party at a home on custer drive for the 21-year-old man who was actually stabbed. the two were friends. they got into a fight. the suspect stabbed h
