is kelly ward right here? >> we will find out tonight.ard is someone who in previous primaries, including against senator mccain, was viewed as something of a crackpot. the fact she put such a squeeze on the establishment's favorite candidate tells you about the changed dynamic of the republican party in the trump era as well as the presence of trump's buddy in the race. he doesn't seem to be getting a lot of traction. republicans in washington have had to pour a lot of money into this race to prop up mcsally. she has had to totally reverse herself on her support for the president. this is someone who skipped the republican convention in 2016 because of her distaste for trump. now has turned around and tried to cast herself as his best ally in the u.s. senate. as ron was saying, in a pinkish purple state, that's a gamble in the general election. it will be interesting to see whether there's in pivot that has to take place when and if she does win the primary. she's favored to win. i do think those comments damaged kelly ward because there

kelly ward and joe arpaio.bruising race is coming down to the wire with just over two months before the november midterms. here to talk about it, former communications director for ted cruz, alice stewart, and ned ryan. alice, this, of course, is senator flake's seat. but it's john mccain casting a shadow over the primary. mcsally has been careful to even talk about senator mccain. she has been moving closer to president trump. what do you make of the fine line that she's trying to walk in. >> she's walking the line of where the polls are indicating you should be walking. all three of the candidates here are really showing that they are strong on immigration and in line with trump on many issues. she has a record that has been used against her. on a positive note, she's a little bit more moderate. we will have the two a little bit further to the right with kelly ward and sheriff arpaio. if this gets close between what is seen as the top two candidates, it's in my view more favorable for mcsally. >> to alice's p

kelli ward, as antagonistic as anybody, to say the least, toward john mccain. where will the balance of power be there in arizona? >> it's tough. you have a three-way race. if it was yust kelli ward versus martha mcsall lly you would hav that clean pro-trump versus establishment battle but sheriff joe arpaio, who will get double digits in the polls most likely, muddles that. most expect martha mcsally to win and by double digits but we also have to look at how she won. she began this race as sort of a pragmatist, centrist who wanted to do things like daca. she has steadily moved, as the primary heat sort of got to her out there in arizona, she has moved toward that trump wing. even earlier today, won't even say a nice thing about outgoing senator jeff flake. tomorrow, if she is the likely nominee, as we presume her to be, she has to attempt to move back to that centrist position where kerstin sinema is sitting nicely. that's why she has a polling lead going into the general election. >> interesting story in arizona. we spent a lot of time looking at the senate

kelli ward, joe arpaio running far to the right, very much in the trumpian mold. up the vote that each one of them got, that's 48% right there. some decimal points involved. almost the same number as mcsally. mcsally wins big tonight. but this is a divided republican party. she benefits. why? because the trump wing of the party was so split between ward and arpaio. mcsally wins the nomination. the republican establishment is happy they get their candidate. she will face the winner of the democratic primary. it is congresswoman kirstjen sinema setting up two female house members running for the open senate seat in the arizona. early polling one taken a few days ago, sinema by four points over mcsally. arizona has mot elect aid democrat to the senate since 188 but democrats think the demographics of that state are trending in their favor. hillary clinton came within three points of trump there in 2016. they think the climate of the trump midterm might be more favorable. they think they've got a shot. sinema against mcsally. republicans are breathe aga sigh of relief
