the last time i saw him, for any significant amount of time was when he came up the campaign for kelly ayotte we spent a full day -- i was trying to help my son chris who was running for governor and the four of us spent a full day in a van crossing the state, hitting a number of events and to listen to john talk in that van about how wonderful his experiences were up here, you knew this was someone that had truly connected with the state. he loved the campaigning and face to face campaigning. he loved being challenged with questions at the town hall. and as we went from event to event, it was obvious he remembered people that each one of those events from the previous campaigns and loved to chat with them about how they had come together over the years. so he really did embrace the new hampshire see me, touch me, feel me style of campaigning and grew to love the people that helped him. >> you're just reminding me of something from the straight talk express. i was on it on the bus with him in 1999. and you know, i went to many of his stump speeches. he would sometimes replay his greatest hits

kelly ayotte i see among those gathered. >> sandra: congressman, you are watching at the live picturesd family come forward to honor and remember him. what are you thinking as you look on at this? >> well, you know, when i think of him i just -- i can think of his sense of humor. the other thing that really impressed me, i was -- i was among the youngest members of congress and i traveled with him. compared to john mccain i didn't have energy. he would be up super early in the morning and up late. then he is doing 30-minute meetings from people from different countries. i remember sitting in some of those meetings and having to chug coffee because i was getting exhausted at these conversations and he lived with it. it set him on fire. he loved it. he was passionate about it. you see that in his mother who is 24 years older than him and still alive. those genes that just keep people driving. it is really a special person. all somebody like me can seek to do is to live up to his legacy as much as possible but if i even reach 1/10 of the focus as he did or 1/20 when he did for his country
