kelly evans is back from london with more on that part of the story. kelly. >> yeah., michelle, the main industries may be different, but ireland and greece have one overriding thing in common, and that is the euro. the trouble for both ireland and greece is that when recession hit, their economies tanked but their currency did not. for example, imagine the benefit to irish exports, to greek tourism, if their currencies were to depreciate somewhere in the range of 50% to 60%, greece currently the figures making the rounds. of course ireland and greece along with the likes of spain and portugal have been ham strung by the by european bank. they wouldn't have had the fear of meanwhile overheating stronger nations like germany. so, despite mr. o leery's optimi optimism, still too early to declare problem solved in ireland. yields for example on 10-year debt are higher than spain or italy and near prior to bailout levels and requiring on monetary fund and through ecb there interbank mechanisms. the irish by the way face a key vote next tuesday on whether to approve the eu

kelly evans is live at jpmorgans headquarters in london with the latest from there. e of the storm where you are, kelly. good morning. >> reporter: karl, good morning. the best of times turned out to be the worst of times for jpmorgan and the timing couldn't be worse. a hedge that was supposed to protect the bank against worsening credit markets went bad when credit markets didn't worsen, in fact they improved during the first quarter. here in london it's built as the road trader. and the truth, as ever, is a little more new answer than that. the decision responsible for the losses is a new york-based division, and it is not clear there's anything rogue going on, so much as a bet, a very big bet gone wrong. as jamie diamond indicated last night, it was not just -- i apologize, it is windy here on this bridge. it was not just the publicity of the trade, carl, there was a problem. the wall street is reporting several hedge funds took the other side of this trade and have profited as a result. but certainly the timing didn't help. the reason this is weighing on financial

kelly evans standing be i in london. and kelly, this morning, i was watching your show, listening to jim o'neill who had a lot of interesting things to say about what this european summit means for the entire globe at this point. >> yeah, becky, he actually coming off some of the comments made by an analyst volatile index is saying clear policy makers have to do more if they want to reassure markets here. and as you can see from the sea of red behind me, people aren't sure that's going to happen. take a look what's happening in the stocks, we can almost count on two hands the number of stocks in the green today. pretty much everyone in the red. bank shares among the big losers, and the stock 600, which has been down throughout much of the morning trading session is down 1.64%. we're handing over to you guys on a bit of a weak note. closer look at what's happening across europe, spain, the underperformer, down 2.13%, the cac 40 in paris down 2%, xetra dax down 1.8%, and the uk down 2%. look at what's happening at bond yiel

kelly evans is standing by in london. >> we've seen more axle rating losses. we did get decent headlines, spanish bond auction went off okay. japan came out with q1 growth figures. 4% annualized rate. but still about a 7:2, 7:3 ratio of red to green here stoxx 600 down about 0.8% on the day. it people pulling their hone out of the third's biggest lender. shares down 30% on the day and on high volume, too. a quick look at what we've got going on. krm 40 down 0.9%. italy 0.7%. a quick look at bonds. again the spain auctions going off reasonably well. but the yield there there at 6.32%. if you want to talk about flight to safety, we're at .084%. the question of whether the economy will be strong enough to keep yields at such low levels remains. euro against the sterling, aussie dollar a little bit stronger against the u.s. dollar. the euro a little weaker against the u.s. dollar. b of a saying a greek exit could bush that toward the 120 range. >> give ross our best. >> yeah, he's here. but i think so he was scared off by this headline in the guardian today which

kelly evans is standing by in london. >> good morning, guys. for all the talk about greece leaving the euro zone, as you can see, things are roughly split this morning. take a look at what's going on in the stoxx 600. currently up about 0.2% on the day and that's after fluctuating between stronger gains throughout the morning. a better tone in bond markets. spain is back toward the 6% level before ten year gilts, spanish debt 6.14%. italy down to 35.. take a look at what's happening in commodities. you mentioned gold. that's up a bit, but want to draw your attention to plat thumb. we've had several guests including patrick armstrong talking about how lat number is the new gold. that is something to keep an eye on. and closer look at some of the bourses, ibex 35 here in spain bucking the trend of what has been a little bit stronger performance, down 0.01%. cac 40 up about 0.3%. ftse struggling to stay in the green. what's interesting about spain, though, all the buzz over here is about this euro vision contest on saturday. i'm still learning abo

kelly evans of the r s of thee standing by. >> the u.s. might have a chance to drive market action today because despite a lot of talk, the price action has been pretty muted. you would hope we get a bit of a rebound here. advancers outpacing decliners by about 7:3 ratio. we're up about half a percent for the index broadly speaking. take a look across the region. in spain the ibex up 0.8%. cac 40 0.7%. of course the story as ever this year has been in bond markets. we've seen new lows in the french ten year and the touch ten year overnight, so even those smaparts that aren't germ are getting the flight to safety bid. ten year in italy is below 6. spain we have 6.5. so again a little better tone there and the bund ten year at 1.28%. keep an eye on the euro-dollar. vee it's in the green today. rebounding up about 0.4%. but just on the point about germany and the extent to which it's on the hook to fund the rest of the you'eurozone, they' benefitting from a much lower currency and borrowing costs. so again there are benefits to be this german

kelly evans joining us from london. bob pisani watching -- what's going on?i thought we were in a permanent downward trajectory. that's not true. i want to pick up on kelly's themes because she hit on the right ones. there's a couple of things happening and the first one and i know people dislike the idea of technical arguments but we were due for a bounce yesterday and are getting another followthrough today. there's more to it than that. there are a lot of hopes that europe and asia will get aggressive on growth. you've seen the stories out there, the chinese are looking for more infrastructure projects. they'll do anything at this point. you're going to hear all sorts of proposals, some of them crazy. some of them not. to increase spending and a lot of divisions over how to do that. there's a lot of hopes for plans post-greek election that they're drawing up plans on how to help out greece if they can convince them to stay in the election. more hope. here is the problem. there's two problems with all of these rosy scenarios. number one, it's not clear whet
