i'm kelly evans. what a way to start off the week.surgeon wall street has the dow up 125 points on the bell. we're 3/4 of the way to dow 21k, better than half a percent move led by home depot, walmart, a few other names. s&p 500 broad market was actually stronger on a percentage basis. 2365 is the new record there. as for the nasdaq, up half a percent. 5865 is the new record there. 18 record highs on the nasdaq. now 19 this year. that's the most we've seen since 1999. we're on pace for a year like that. the russell 2000, the small caps, those up 3/4 of 1% to close at 1410, eight straight moves higher for the dow. we haven't seen that since last summer. all four of these major averages at record highs again today. now walmart was surging after announcing its ecommerce. business grew by 24% as the big box retailer takes aim at amazon, which stock is the better buy? we will debate that coming up. >>> joining me today to talk about these markets, rob cox from reuters breaking news, paul hickey both are with us here. rob, i mean, just want

i'm kelly evans, here's how we're finishing up the session on wall street.ks like green arrows across the board. the dow up 89 points, that's pretty much a session high today. look at this, 501 we're now halfway already from 20 to 21. a gain of nearly half a% today. financials pacing the way, we'll have more on that in a moment. the s&p 500 adding about 9 points to 23.37. the nasdaq up a third of a%, to 57.82. the russell 2,000 picking up a few points. we have a few earnings reports on deck this hour. meg terrell will bring us results from express fit as soon as those around. a couple barometers there for us. cnbc's senior market columnist is here with me on set today. charlie from aerial investments. an unbelievable story about the strength of the stock markets, no matter what you seem to throw their way. >> it's definitely impressive, it's at that point in the rally, where you have to give credit to the persist ens of it, it's been resilient, we've had this pattern of afternoon buying, quiet strength throughout the afternoon, big investors don't feel expos

i'm kelly evans. some major records today on wall street, the dow up 115 points to close at 20,169 or so it settles out here. should be good enough for a new record by 70 points. a gain of better than half a percent. same for broad index s&p 500. look at that, taking the 2300 level for the first time. its prior record close was 2298. nasdaq composite hitting its third straight record close with 5715 on the back of its gain of half a percent or a little more than that today. consistent gains with the dow, s&p and nasdaq across the board and record highs for all three averages as well. what about the russell small cap? the best performer of nearly 1.5%. still points shy of their record high of 1388. transports are well below 9468 where they closed at a high water mark. 9331 is where we stand on that key benchmark. we'll talk about what got us here in a moment. we're also turning our attention to the earnings after the bell. susan li will cover expedia for us, julia boorstin is all over news corp., activ

i'm kelly evans. the ridiculous rally continues.points on the bell for its 12th straight record close. again, we haven't seen a stretch like this since 1987 when in the opening 13 trading sessions of the year the dow managed to post consecutive highs. we're one day shy of that goal. if you were to call it a goal. today the dow adding as mentioned only 16 points. it was the worst performer of all the major averages but that is enough to continue the streak, keep it alive. 20,837 is the level there. the s&p 500 for its part by the way also closing at a record high by about two points over its prior record. 2369 and changes the closing level is the broad index. nasdaq about four points shy of its record, 5861. still there with a quarter point percent gain. russell 2000, the best performer up nearly 1%. its high water mark is 1410. we did not quite get there today. there are at least three vacancies expected on the fed's board of governors this year. coming up, jim grant of grant's interest rate observer telling us how donald trump can
