i'm kelly evans.join me in just a moment the dow up just 35 points on the bell art cashin told us there were sell order on the close pushing us low, 100 points off the highs of the session from this morning. still, enough of a gain to put us over 21,800 to 817. s&p 500 up 4.5 points to 2443. the russell 2000 small caps continue to try to stage a quiet comeback they are up a quarter percent, all the more significant the on the close it turned negative dropping to 6265. two-week losing streak snapped for the dow and s&p. locks like we're finishing the week a little higher a live shot of galveston, texas. there's the path of hurricane harvey as it prepares to make landfall it's gaining enough strength to become a category 3 storm. we heard that just about an hour ago. we'll bring you the very latest from the ground. there's galveston where things already look pretty, pretty rough. the mayor of san antonio says the city will take in anyone who need to flee the path of the storm. >> joining me on the panel

i'm kelly evans. a brutal session with a 270-point drop at the bell on the dow.f 1.25% for the blue chips none of them were in the green today. the worst performers including cisco and goldman sachs. the s&p shedding 1.5% to close at 2430 and the nasdaq down nearly 2% to close at 6221 the russell 2000 small caps also down 1.8%, a 25-point drop to 1358 the flip side of that is the vix, volatility gauge jumping almost four points to touch 15.5, nearly 16 on the session today. the selling pressure picked up steadily into the close. we'll have more on this in just a moment as investors are also awaiting some big earnings, we have courtney reagan to cover gap and ross stores and morgan brennan following me applied materials we have stephanie link, managing director from tiaa investments and nancy tangler, chief executive officer at heartland financial. welcome, everybody, and stephanie, a really difficult day and a tough session. is this raul because of what's happening inside the white house, or is there a lot more to it >> i think that's certainly what it is. it's j

kelly: we have been listening to police commissioner william evans, over all a good day, arrested 27people, in property damage, no vandalism. he also described that there were three groups that came to boston today, those who came for free speech which was the small conservative group that gathered in boston commons between the hours of 12:00 p.m. -- i'm sorry, 12:00 noon until 2:00 and ended 15 minutes early. they were outnumbered by 15,000 people who came to counterprotest that particular event and there was also a group he said, those that came to start trouble. melissa: the counter-protestors, he described them those against free speech. i'm not sure that the people in that group would be happy with that description, although some on the other side might agree, but anyway, a lot of criticism for some of the comments he made. and might take it with a grain of salt. kelly: the mayor that people were allowed to come and actually protest as well as get free speech but basically the mayor summing it all up saying it was a message of love and not hate, the fight against racism, the fig
