joining us now in new york kelly goff, special correspondent for the root.com. and here in washington, tim carney, senior political columnist for the washington examiner and ryan lizza, washington correspondent for the new yorker and a cnn contributor. ryan, you broke the news this week that justice had gone after several phone lines belonging to the fox news washington bureau. let's start with the latest developments. cnn and "the new york times" reporting last night that justice -- or you should say law enforcement officials say justice did notify three years ago news korp about the subpoena for the phone regards separate from james rosen's personal g mail account and news korp executives indicating that fox news was not informed. does this change the nature of this story? >> i don't think it changes that much. it adds a piece of information. when i called fox this week and asked them did they know that these five fox phone lines were targeted, a spokesperson said no, and they referred me to a previous statement. of it sounds like from what fox is saying now i

kelli goff of "the root" joins me now to talk about that.come back. >> thank you. >> michael: will this case impact the abortion right's movement? >> i think the pro life or anti-choice movement wants to make the case the face of the reproductive rights movement. they want to say this is what this is really all about is the murder of babies. and this reinforces precisely why we need more access to contraception. and it shows why we need more access for low-income women to reproductive health care in general. but i think that the goznell case is a real opportunity for the reproductive rights movement. and what i need by that is that for too long i think there has been this black and white discussion of abortion, you are either with us or against us. and planned parenthood found in their own polling this year that people are frankly sick of those labels. pro life pro-choice do nothing to address the realities of what americans feel about the abortion. look at the murdoch and akin political races. they still recognize if a woman has been raped

chris plant is a conservative, kelly goff is a political analyst, she leans left. ut i'll pretend i do. >> kelly, is this fair that mayors of illegal guns is doing, sending sandy hook families directly to these town hall meetings? >> well, i think this is as fair as the nra pouring millions of dollars into ads trying to support them and sending people to support them at the town halls, because that's why you've had some shouting matches happen. you know, what i will say is what happened in my hometown of houston in terms of gun violence is a tragedy. senators voted against a proposal that 90% of americans support is a tragedy, but i think this vote is going to be a tragedy for kelly iott. she's a rising star, sort of the antisarah palin in that she's substantiative, but she's a been sort of the anti-ted cruz in that she's not polarizing. i think this vote's going to be a albatross around her neck. specifically victims who lost her mother in newtown, making sure no one forgets she had this vote. >> chris, i want to get to you, i promise, but i want to say this, senat
