i'm michelle caruso-cabrera, in today for kelly evans. dow jonesial average, strong rally throughout the session, right? we opened higher this morning and stayed high throughout the session. the dow higher by 265 points the s&p higher by nearly 28 points, 1 .3%. >> let's bring in today's panel. we have evan newmark, kay kelly. and mike santoli from yahoo! finance. mike santoli, let me start with you. the consensus explanation for today's rally is the employment report was good enough but not so good that we were definitely going to see a rate hike next month. you agree with that? >> i pretty much do yes. it was a relief that we didn't see the trend erode in the underlying fundamentals of the economy past the winter months. basically right on trend that we've been on in terms of monthly job growth for a long time now. that being said, the market rally was over by 10:00. it raised basically repriced it up 1.5% on all the indexes and we sat there. it wasn't so much about people changing their minds it was saying it could have been worse. let's reprice

we're looking at all 30 components of the dow jones industrials average, 15 are up 15 are town right now. mcdonald's the best performer today, kelly2.6%. walmart with that disappointing earnings report is the big drag down 4.5% right now. >> a lot of retail disappointments. dominic chu is keeping an eye on the market movers. >> mcdonald's it's back up to the $100 mark. we'll start off with a look at dick's sporting goods. it took a hit after reporting a drop in quarterly profits. those shares down 5%. red robin posting a huge earnings. the burger chain said that earnings did beat and it was helped along by lower labor costs among other things. those shares up by 15%. vodafone shares are sinking. those shares down by 2.5%. then finally apple the biggest company in the world according to the "wall street journal" apple dropped plans to make a 4k television set more than a year ago. karl icahn reiterated his bullish view on apple right here on cnbc today. he has made what some estimates are over $3 billion in profits since he started buying that stock two years ago. karl icahn making those comments right here on cnbc. what can be cat

kelly evans. here's how we're finishing the day on wall street also the week and the trading month. the dow jonesustrial average really doing down on the close there. we had a rebalancing, we have the concentration in the final trades as well. just below 18,000 the closing level there. the s&p down 13 daz knack down 28. moving substantially higher in fact, as jackie toll us earlier, we're looking at a close for the session that was above 06 bucks. more bullish talk among the hopefuls that will potentially see more breakouts to the up side. that remains to be seen. a 4.5% move today. this was the final trading day of the month. that strategy doesn't seem to apply for the month anyway. dom chu. >> it's an interesting move overall. may ended up being not quite as bad as some people thought it was going to be. as we take a look at the major indices, the dow closed up. the s&p in that same ballpark about 22 points overall for the month. you can see here the nasdaq composite, a lot of that deal driven, hot specters in technology biotechnology, semiconductors nasdaq composite up by 2.5%. as we drill dow

kelly evans. it looks like we've got some new highs for the index. let's see how we finished up the session on wall street today. the dow jonesaverage needed a level of 18,312. didn't quite get there. we're about 22 points below the high that was notched on may 19th. the s&p 500 looks like we're going out at a new high. actually correct. a record close here. the nasdaq just shy -- a little bit more rare for the nasdaq which hasn't hit a closing high since april 24th. not quite enough to get there, closing at 5090. courtney reagan has the numbers. >> gap is reporting its first quarter results with earnings coming in at 56 cents, exactly in line with what analysts had been expecting. gap reaffirming its range of $2.75 to $2.80. we already knew gap's revenue of $3.66 billion for the quarter compared to analysts' estimates of $3.75 billion, we also already knew those comparable same store sales down 4% because remember gap does still report on a monthly basis for those comparables and the revenues. kelly, back to you. >> all right, courtney. more retail earnings to come. but for right now, let's look at the gap reaction after hou
