kelly loeffler, the senator in georgia, it now seems months later that the takeaway instead of rejecting the big lie, is now to embrace it and to harness it and this is the case with many, many republicans. >> and they're harnessing it in part by kind of lying about what all of this is all about that instead of it being what it really is, which is an effort to double down on the big lie, they're talking about increasing voters' confidence in the electoral system in broad and vague ways. the only reason that there is a lack of confidence in the electoral system is because of the lies that we're told for months about the security of the last election. the last election was secure. there were very few examples of fraud and so all of these changes in reaction to that, and in reaction to the distrust that exists among republicans is part of that lie. this has become republican orthodoxy, this perception that we just need to secure elections because that's a good thing to do, well the election was secure, and this is -- these are clearly efforts to put in solutions to something that wasn't eve

that night too much about doubting election voracity and security and that that had hurt you and kelly loeffler with voters in north georgia. do you agree with mcconnell on that? >> we had significant irregularities in the election that may have affected the outcome. but what i think we saw happen in georgia are two things. in november, 52% voted against the democratic agenda and my democratic opponent. over 5 million people voted that proves the more people that vote in georgia the better it is for republicans. in the run-off because a lot of people felt like their vote was compromised did not come back out and vote. president trump wasn't able to get many of his supporters to come back out. you could hear from the response from that comment how a lot of people felt about that. so what the state is trying to do is correct some of these potential irregularities and create a level playing field for all voters and make it easier to vote, harder to cheat and give everybody equal access to their constitutional right. >> martha: so you were in quarantine that night. you couldn't be at the rally. as

i just saw kelly loeffler say to republicans, unless we get our own stacey abrams, we don't have a shot. what is being done in georgia to keep that state blue? >> so i think there's a lot. one is working to neutralize the impact of these anti-voting bills. we're talking about over 50 bills. we're talking about a fundamental change in how georgians vote. we're talking about them attempting to roll back 16 years of vote by mail. it's petty politics of retribution. and it needs to be newt ramized. so i'm really pleased that the president and vice president are here to, a, acknowledge that this isn't business as usual but also, b, i think there's a thread that needs to continue to be pulled on in the politics of white nationalism that says a white dude can have a bad day and eight people die, six of them asian american women, that a party can lose their election and then 43 states attack their election laws to make it more difficult for people to vote. and that, again, a party can lose an election and attack the capitol and kill capitol police officers, that there's an acknowledgment just b

i mean, if we're talking about georgia, we look at kelly loeffler's defeat, some people say, oh, it'sd too much allegiance to donald trump. other people say, it's because trump didn't go down to the state enough. even with -- in hindsight, it's hard to know exactly how to analyze the losses in that race and trump's role in them. >> it really is, but the -- alex, the 2022 midterm elections are going to be different in one regard, which is that trump is not on the ballot and he also doesn't have anything personally at stake. he drove people to the polls in 2016 and 2020 because he was at the top of the ballot and then in 2018, he very effectively drove turnout in a number of those key senate battlegrounds in those midterms because the stake -- the future of his agenda was at stake in terms of which party controlled the house and the senate, but now he's a former, he's out of office, he doesn't have much personally on the line and so it will be sort of a test to see whether he can translate all of that support to mobilizing his supporters around these other candidates. >> he is still iss
