rit romney and chris christie is not out yet. kelly ayotte is on the stage now, but there is a big, big crowd in this event. i will tell you, i have not seen a bigger crowd for governor romney up until this point. there is an overflow room next to this one where they are moving people because there are just so many people here tonight. even though this is new hampshire, you can basically call this new york for mitt romney because if he can't make it here, he can't make it anywhere. he is heavily favored to win, but there is probably a good sense of urgency inside the romney campaign right now. there is a tracking poll that has been measuring this campaign over the last several days. it has mitt romney's numbers in the poll have steady gone down. no surprise. it is because he has been coming under attack at the nbc "meet the press" debate earlier today, almost all of the other contenders on the stage were going after romney. there was one point during the debate where romney was trying to explain why he is not a career politician. newt

nbc news correspondent peter alexander is at romney campaign headquarters in iowa and nbc's kelly o'donnellm campaign headquarters. kelly, let's start with you. what are you hearing tonight from santorum's folks and how optimistic are they? >> well, they do feel good about it. one of the biggest ways they can identify that is they say fund raising has gone up about 350% in the past six days. as ron was telling us rick santorum is out talking to voters in the final hours tonight. he and his wife karen each hitting about four of the caucus sites. they feel good about it because they think they did it the old school way. he's done about 380 town hall meetings in iowa, spent more than 100 days in the state, and much of that time went largely unnessed or was a very intimate setting very different than what we've seen on the campaign trail within the last few days where there has been not only enormous national media presence but international media as well. that struck me when i was out on the road with him. so what they hope to do is to be able to consolidate not only the support of people who

kelly wright. >> we're not talking about the temperatures. i'm mitt romney and newt gingerich are attacking each other. a little more than 8% points apart and now candidates are picking a new target. carl cameron is live in orlando. it looks like gingrich has ground to make up, at least according to the poll. is there enough time? >> probably. but it really depends on what happens in the last couple days and it's difficult to make up a gap on the weekend when voters tune out because they have personal lives to contend with with days off. it's close. gingrich is trailing a little bit. there's a sense of confidence in the romney campaign. there's a sense of urgency with the gingrich folks and they're scrambling to organize where they have a cash disadvantage but the rhetoric is tilted. they're beating the daylights out of each other on television. today was strange. gingrich today is complaining about the debates last week suggesting that the one on thursday, the audience was too loud and it was distracting and sort of disabled his ability too get out his mess

kelly ann mentioned the idea of inevitability. nobody in boston or working for governor romney believed it was an inevitable nomination. >> on your guy's website, i believe, it said about south carolina on tuesday, the presidential candidate will be selected. i remember -- >> there's not -- i tell you, too. there's another thing. anderson, there's never anything wrong with confidence. you have to send those type of messages to supporters. that is hard-fought race. the polls right now from cnn and others, they're reflecting that very close race and that's why everybody's down in florida working very hard to reach as many vote earls as possible to talk to them about governor romney's experience and also what he would do to fix the economy. that's what -- >> talk about the polls, too. gingrich has if you look at the data closely has fallen off post monday night's debate. why do you think that is? >> well, i think in the previous program you probably showed the charts that showed how much negative advertising is being spent by which campaigns and superpacs. that is not a close race
