i'm jamie costello alongside kelly swoope. we first broke this story wednesday. sense then quick reaction from the fire marshal. almost no response. none. >> now more problems. brian kuebler is staying on top of the story tonight. >> reporter: indoor bolts and padlocks in northeast baltimore a clear violation of fire and safety codes, but according to fire department records, a practice that dated back to 2011, long enough that students we talked top didn't seem all that -- to didn't seem all that surprised. >> all the doors were locked. >> reporter: it's an issue that got the attention of the baltimore city fire marshal who, the very next morning, ordered the staff it remove the bolts and padlocks. city school workers spent the morning sawing and uncrew -- unscrewing the lking mechanism. the city fire department conducts a surprise inspection of at least 2 other randomly selected all the baltimore schools it. turns out maritime industries is not the only building using padlock. abc2 investigators obtained the results which show two other schools cited for padloc

i'm kelly swoope alongside jamie costello. a howard county police officer begins his road to recovery surrounded by family and friends. >> the family of officer steven houk was rushed to shock trauma. katrina bush is there with an update on houk's condition. >> reporter: officer houk has had a lot of visitors. the good news is his wife is here and he also has family from out of state. also visiting him the howard county police chief. he said the past 24 hours has been a difficult period for everyone involved. we've learned that doctors say steven houk is recovering from multiple injuries. the 30-year-old officer was shot once in the torso but they are cautiously optimistic about his condition. >> he is still in serious condition. it's hard to tell. it's hopeful that he will make a full recovery. it's a tough situation to have to tell a wife, meet the wife in the parking lot and take her up and show her her husband. an incredibly strong family and frankly, we're drawing strength from them. >> we've also learned in the same hosp

kelly swoope and jamie costello. a routine car stop nets three suspected burglars. it wasn't just car radios they're accused of stealing. >> police found rounds of stolen ammunition. >> ammunition disappeared from a marshal's trailer, the bullets made specifically for law enforcement. the thieves didn't get very far. just before 2:00 sunday morning. an anne arundels police officer saw a car hit a curb. >> three teenagers under the age of 21, clearly in the position of 70 boxes of ammunition and then the burglary tools there. were bolt cutters, latex gloves and a flashlight. that rises to the level of probable cause. >> reporter: the driver 18-year- old brandon sharif and two other teenagers were inside. they admitted to breaking into the trailer and stealing the rounds. police don't believe this is part of a bigger plot. >> these guys didn't have weapons in their possession or access. we didn't have a huge public safety concern that there was any type of plot. we think they got their hands on some ammunition and randomly went into this storage container. >> police s

alongside kelly swoope, i'm jamie costello. we have new developments in the armed robbery which targeted vi ripken, and the man who tried to carjack cal ripken's mom. >> reporter: a year after vi ripken was abducted at gun point from her aberdeen home and driven around bound and blindfolded, samantha atkins remembered that day that she and her brother learned of the kidnapping. >> when she got robbed, me and him saw it on tv. he thought this was crazy. >> reporter: now samantha's brother, jesse bowen of havre de grace tried to carjack vi ripken on tuesday afternoon. >> he was supposed to come down here last night. then he never showed up. jean called us and said he was in jail. she told me police came to the door last night and said jesse tried robbing cal ripken's mom. i'm like really? because we don't even have cable here. >> reporter: the matriarch of the family apparently scared away the robber, pressing the key to be, setting off the car alarm. >> someone tried to carjack her, take her car. i read that online and i thought
