u.s. troops will be involved in a support role for afghanistan, kelly. >> john allen the command tkefr u.sand international forces in afghanistan is focused on keeping 6 to 15,000 troops in afghanistan for training and counterterrorism operation. there are still several options being discussed among american and ally military planners. there is a preliminary plan that's called for 10,000 american troops and several thousand nonamerican nato troops that may add up to the same thing that general allen has. their primary job after combat operate rations in december 2014 will be to provide support to the afghan military. also an american counterterrorism force of less than a thousand would continue operations throughout the region with a particular focus on al-qaida. a final decision on this still needs to be made by the united states and nato and of course afghanistan. the army chief of staff depends some decisions to be made next month, bill. bill: some american troops are already serving in a support role as would he know. what is their on i hav objective as they get ready to end combat ope

u.s. attorney's office. kate kelly joins us now with the details. what do we know to this point?ott, a very tough day for s.e.c. capital and especially for steve cohen, the hedge fund's founder. they have spent recent years fending off -- amid charges that two former employees engaged in insider trading and later destroyed evidence of their behavior, but in the case today, yet another former employee stands accused of insider trading and cohen appears to have been involved in the trades at issue. whether or not he knew he was dealing with will gotten information remains unclear. this case centers on allegations that starting in 2006, an s.e.c. analyst named matthew martoma recommended buying shares of elan and wyeth to only sell them in 2008 based on illegal obtained information about a drug trial that yielded bad results. sac allegedly made a quarter of a billion dollars and martoma took home a bonus of more than 9 million. they are saying this is the most lucrative insider trading case ever and raises questions about what more is to come. maybe the most detrimental is july 2008

u.s. government official is telling cnn the affair that caused petraeus' stepdown was first revealed through an fbi investigation. suzanne kelly has more now. suzanne? >> we now know from a u.s. official it was a complaint that paula broadwell, the woman who wrote the biography of general peatry was was sending harassing e-mails to another woman that prompted the fbi to investigate. also we know from that source that the investigation led to the discovery of e-mails between broadwell and petraeus that indicated the affair. that second woman hasn't been identified and the official we spoke with didn't know the nature of that woman's relationship with the former director. but more details are coming out about the time line of events and when u.s. officials were notified of the circumstances of this investigation. senior u.s. intelligence official tells cnn the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, james clapper, about the investigation on tuesday night, election night, just as some polls were beginning to close, and that director clapper as a friend, colleague, fellow officer and admirer, urged petraeus to step dow

u.s. and nato commander in afghan stand is accused of, quote, inappropriate communications with jill kelly. she started the investigation. a senior official traveling with allen says his communications with kelly are under review. the official says general allen disputes engaging in any wrongdoing in the matter. the fbi referred the matter to the department of defense for investigation on sunday. early this morning secretary panetta directed that the defense department inspector general investigate. meanwhile, last night fbi agents went to the home of biographer paula broadwell, the woman government officials say petraeus acknowledged having an affair with. a senior law enforcement official says the search was consensual, not a raid. meanwhile, they said petraeus had hoped to survive the scandal but he was told to resign by james clapper. andrea mitchell broke the petraeus story. she has more on the e-mail and the growing demand for answers on capital hill. >> reporter: we learned what was in the anonymous harassing e-mails from jill kelly whose volunteer work for military families brought
