so our kelsi thorud joins us now with a special look. hey, kelsi. >> reporter: hey, jules.s always fun when a super bowl comes into town because then you get all these peripheral events that gets to highlight different things. so today that thing was girls flag football. they had some great coaches out here. 49ers well known previous player hall of famer super bowl champion steve young was out here coaching some high school girls. the other coach was venus williams, of course, well known in the tennis community and out here she was pretty good on the field as well. these guys were out here promoting the growth of girls flag football. football is a sport that is so popular, but has not been available to girls until recently. that is something both of these athletes are prioritizing. that's why they wanted to come out here. here's what both of them told us about coaching this game. >> we know what confidence does for people in sports. we've lived it. so we are wanting to make sure that girls get that benefit of having sports in their lives. >> i want to yell from the mountain

let's now go to our kelsi thorud live now. the popularity of flag football has really exploded for both boys and girls. you have something special tonight. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. we're actually talking to some of the people here earlier and they said that flag football is the number one fastest growing sport in the country and it's actually being led by girls. you can see some of the girls on the field behind me, but this event is a special event. it's kind of a presuper bowl event. we're all talking about the players that will be on the field sunday, but there are so many youth athletes that love football and it's really only in recent years that girls have been able to participate in this sport. we saw just last year california for the first time made girls flag football a varsity high school sport. so out here today to promote flag football ahead of this year's super bowl were some superstars. we have san francisco 49ers legend steve young out here. he actually coaches flag football for his two daughters. along wi

and while it may be the biggest blow yet to union square, one business owner in the area tells kelsi thorud he still thinks and believes that the future of the neighborhood is bright. >> reporter: well not only are customers shocked by the news that the union square macy's will be closing, but local businesses are also shocked and wondering how this closure may impact their business moving forward. john, the owner of john's grill near union square, tells me his restaurant has seen this neighborhood change a lot over the years. >> john's grill's been open since 1908, and since 1908 we've lost many iconic stores like joseph magnum, what else can i remember, liberty house, city of paris, so many places have closed. >> reporter: so when john heard the news the city's flagship macy's at union square announced it would be closing, he felt a feeling he's felt before, sadness for what this closure will mean for locals and those who work at the department store. >> you know, the businesses continue, they'll make money somewhere else. they'll make money online. but it's so many jobs being lost

kelsi thorud got some of their reactions as the overtime loss began to sink in. >>> well, it was such a tough night for all the niner fans who were out here in vegas to watch the super bowl in person. so many of them were hoping the team would pull it out in the end. even though it didn't end as they hoped, all of the 49er faithful really showed up here. allegiant stadium behind me was rocking throughout the game. there were so many more niner fans inside that stadium than the kansas city chiefs fans. every single time they got a critical third down, that place erupted. that's why it was even more heartbreaking for all the fans in the stands when the niners couldn't pull out the win in the end. we talked with so many fans right when the game ended. so many tears. so much heartbreak, so much shock really. here is just a few of the fans that we spoke with. >> how are you feeling about this loss? >> not great at all. >> is this your first super bowl? >> yes. >> how was it otherwise? >> great. >> we thought we had it, but we didn't. >> i think they could turn it around and come back again

. >> reporter: kelsi thorud is joining me now and you've got kind of the tale of two stories. it's not like which team you're going to root for. it's which team and which celebrity, right? it's kind of house divided in some cases. >> reporter: we've been talking to people all week and this is not a two-team super bowl. it's a three-team super bowl, the 9ers, the chiefs and taylor swift nation. yeah, it's funny because we all know taylor swift is rooting for the chiefs because that's where her boyfriend is, but a lot of 9ers fans are also huge taylor swift fans. i asked a couple of them about how they're feeling for the super bowl. this year's super bowl may be the 9ers versus the chiefs, but for certain 9ers fans it's also the 9ers versus taylor swift making for some complicated emotions for 9ers die hards who are also swifties. >> i'm a little conflicted. my family keeps making fun of me. >> reporter: swift, of course, will be rooting for her kansas city chiefs boyfriend travis kelce on sunday. that's a bitter pill for 9ers swifties to swallow, but one they're trying to make

kelsi is joining me now to talk about those ticket prices. actually you can still see the performance on channel 5, but you can't be there live. >> reporter: yeah. we were just talking about whether or not the experience might be a little better if you actually watch it on tv, a closer view. >> we were making ourselves feel better about not being there. i do like seeing the instant replays and i like just being at home sometimes watching the game. i'll be in vegas, my new home now. >> reporter: the good news is you won't be alone. i talked to dozens, if not hundreds, of fans this week and maybe a handful have tickets. most of them are watching at a hotel or somewhere here in vegas. i met one couple yesterday out here doing all sorts of super bowl events. the guy runs a kind of golf sports series where he brings out athletes to play different sports ahead of the big game, but he was telling me he has one ticket. his wife is in town with him and he doesn't know if he's going to be able to get her a ticket. so he may just go to the game himself.
