. >> good morning, i'm kelsi thorud , late yesterday, new evacuation orders were ordered near interstate 405 after a flareup on the eastern side of the palisades fire. at least 11 people have been killed including five of palisades fire and six from the eaton fire. the fire consumed about 56 square miles, an area larger than san francisco, tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders. the fires are the most catastrophic that los angeles county has ever seen, and we have the latest developments. >> reporter: firefighters racing towards los angeles neighborhoods, residents facing the palisades fire, with new evacuation orders as the weekend began. >> i took all my family photos of my grandfather who recently passed, those are the only things we took. >> reporter:, wind is helping the firefighters gain some control but the wind is forecasted to pick back up in an area that hasn't seen major rain in more than eight months and there is none in the forecast. >> people are watering down their homes, they are trying to get ahead of the game, people have to come together and help ou

i'm kelsi thorud. death toll from the wildfires in los angeles county has risen to 16 with more than 12,000 churches destroyed or damaged. this morning, cal fire reports the containment remains unchanged for both the policies fire at 11% and the eaton fire at 15%. the palisades fire grew yesterday by 1000 acres and strong winds are expected to complicate efforts. evacuation warnings remain in effect for more than 150,000 residents. including areas near landmarks like the getty museum and ucla. the fires have burned 62 square miles , an area larger than san francisco. or fatalities are expected, as search teams combed through affected neighborhoods. the situation remains critical with higher winds in the forecast for tomorrow. l.a. county is receiving international support to combat the ongoing wildfires. that includes 70 firefighters who just arrived from mexico to join some 40,000 personnel already working to contain those multiple blazes. those firefighters from south of the border landed at lax on s

our kelsi thorud is live for us in brentwood in los angeles, where people have been trying to get back into the evacuation zones, just for some information. hi, kelsi. >> reporter: hi, juliette. yeah, we are actually right on the edge of the evacuation zones, so you can see this check point here behind me. they have these all across brentwood here tonight. and so it is police and national guard, who are staged out here, and they are only letting in first responders and residents who actually have a permit from the city. and now this entire area like you were just saying, they do not have power right now. and so many people who live in this neighborhood have not been able to stay in their homes, so many people have been trying to come in here as we have seen people trying to come through to get to their homes, to get important documents, or to really check on their homes. and officials are not letting them through, which has caused a lot of frustrations. >> i want to go home to get some medicine for my wife. and they won't let me go one block out. >> reporter: emotions are running high

kelsi thorud has been talking to people, quite a lot for people to worry about. another night of more wind. >> reporter: that is exactly right, juliette. we have been out here pretty much all day at this checkpoint in brentwood, watching homeowners trying to get in. they still have a checkpoint here. they will be out here all night. it is the national guard as well as police. now, they are only allowing in first responders and residents who have a specific permit that they have to get through the city to let them in here. you are talking, though, they are worried the winds can pick up. that is why the area is still under a mandatory evacuation order. that has been frustrating for a lot of homeowners trying to get back into their houses to retrieve a few things. we spoke to a woman who has lived nearby and has not had power for the last week. >> reporter: it has been an exhausting week for eileen and her friend april. >> it is just really. it is very difficult. hard to put into words being displaced like this. >> reporter: she lives in brentwood, april in pasadena

let's get to our kelsi thorud. tell us where you are now and tell us what crews are doing to prepare for another dangerous night. >> reporter: yeah, juliette. we're in la la quinata flintridge. this is an inmate hand crew. you hear a lot about california prisoners coming out and helping during wildfire incidents like this and this is them in action. this is one of the areas that cal fire is worried if the winds go pick up overnight, the eaton fire could come back this direction. we're kind of northwest of altadena, the area pretty much demolished by the eaton fire last week. you can see what these crews are doing. they are pulling all this brush down off of this hill trying to help if a fire does actually come back towards this way. it will not be as traumatic or intense as we saw last week. so they're cutting branches. they're cutting trees, bushes, everything they can to just clear debris out of this area and this is actually right next to a water tank in this neighborhood and this neighborhood is right on the to

our kelsi thorud spoke with local fire survivors. >> some people it took five years to get their houseebuilt. >> reporter: pamela said she can't help but feel on high alert seeing the images coming out of southern california. >> i snap into a vigilance kind of like i've got to stay abreast of what the latest information is. >> reporter: just like the thousands of people coming home to nothing but ash down there, pamela and her family lost everything when the tubbs fire plowed through their santa rosa neighborhood back in 2017. >> it felt like when, you know, in wizard of oz and she looks out the window and it's a tornado. that's what it looked like when i looked out my window. >> reporter: pamela and her family escaped the flames in the nick of time, but their house along with the entire coffey park neighborhood, was destroyed. >> it looks like a war zone or like the moonscape. i mean it's just flat. there's nothing. >> it hit me more today than yesterday. >> reporter: steve rahm also lost his home in the tubbs fire. >> we had my mother-in-law, a dog, my niece, my wife all piled in the

our kelsi thorud joins us live in the brentwood neighborhood where evacuations are still in place as people would watch for those winds, kelsey? >> reporter: hey, ryan. yeah, we are actually right on the border of where the evacuation zone is here. you can see behind me, it had is the check point. you see there is police out here. there's national guard. they're only letting in first responders and residents who can show proof that they got a permit from the city. so they're being very strict about who they are letting in this neighborhood. that is because as you said, they are still worried about this area. the palisades fire, still not 100% contained. worst-case scenario if something were to pick up overnight, this would be the neighborhood at risk that's why it's under an evacuation order. a lot of residents have been out of their homes now for about a week. they're starting to get frustrated. we spoke with one woman who hasn't had power in her home for a week. it's been an exhausting week. >> it's just very difficult. it's hard to put into words being displaced like this. >> repo
