i'm kelsi thorud. death toll from the wildfires in los angeles county has risen to 16 with more than 12,000 churches destroyed or damaged. this morning, cal fire reports the containment remains unchanged for both the policies fire at 11% and the eaton fire at 15%. the palisades fire grew yesterday by 1000 acres and strong winds are expected to complicate efforts. evacuation warnings remain in effect for more than 150,000 residents. including areas near landmarks like the getty museum and ucla. the fires have burned 62 square miles , an area larger than san francisco. or fatalities are expected, as search teams combed through affected neighborhoods. the situation remains critical with higher winds in the forecast for tomorrow. l.a. county is receiving international support to combat the ongoing wildfires. that includes 70 firefighters who just arrived from mexico to join some 40,000 personnel already working to contain those multiple blazes. those firefighters from south of the border landed at lax on s

kelsi thorud has been talking to people, quite a lot for people to worry about. another night of more wind. >> reporter: that is exactly right, juliette. we have been out here pretty much all day at this checkpoint in brentwood, watching homeowners trying to get in. they still have a checkpoint here. they will be out here all night. it is the national guard as well as police. now, they are only allowing in first responders and residents who have a specific permit that they have to get through the city to let them in here. you are talking, though, they are worried the winds can pick up. that is why the area is still under a mandatory evacuation order. that has been frustrating for a lot of homeowners trying to get back into their houses to retrieve a few things. we spoke to a woman who has lived nearby and has not had power for the last week. >> reporter: it has been an exhausting week for eileen and her friend april. >> it is just really. it is very difficult. hard to put into words being displaced like this. >> reporter: she lives in brentwood, april in pasadena

our kelsi thorud joins us live in the brentwood neighborhood where evacuations are still in place as people would watch for those winds, kelsey? >> reporter: hey, ryan. yeah, we are actually right on the border of where the evacuation zone is here. you can see behind me, it had is the check point. you see there is police out here. there's national guard. they're only letting in first responders and residents who can show proof that they got a permit from the city. so they're being very strict about who they are letting in this neighborhood. that is because as you said, they are still worried about this area. the palisades fire, still not 100% contained. worst-case scenario if something were to pick up overnight, this would be the neighborhood at risk that's why it's under an evacuation order. a lot of residents have been out of their homes now for about a week. they're starting to get frustrated. we spoke with one woman who hasn't had power in her home for a week. it's been an exhausting week. >> it's just very difficult. it's hard to put into words being displaced like this. >> repo
