do you expect republican governor brian kemp to be at the rally? what is the latest with president trump, given the president trump has started to attack him a little bit? guest: that's an open question on whether or not the governor will go to this rally. my hunch is no, not just because of that relationship but unfortunately yesterday, there was a tragedy involving a young staffer, who is very close to the governor, who died in a traffic accident. cast a pall on events over the weekend. even before this, it was in doubt on whether the governor would show up, because the president has continued to attack him for not playing a more forceful role and essentially blocking the certification of georgia's vote. he has called on the governor to use emergency powers to do so, but state law does not allow for him to do it and use emergency powers. there is a provision in state law. the governor said, simply, i'm following state law by taking the steps he is taking. the president has also said he was ashamed to have endorsed brian kemp two years ago. it is

more caustic in his comments about governor kemp, according . according to two sources familiar with a conversation, in a recent phone call, referred to kemp as a nut job and a morn and questioned why kelly lefler, why she couldn't win her race outright even though there was never an expectation that she would given the crowded field including a republican congressman who was running against her and we're seeing even today, the president continuing to attack georgia's republican governor brian kemp taking to twitter and once again suggesting that kemp and the georgia secretary of state aren't republicans, putting that in quotation marks, as you can see now on your screen, and so the question is, does the president continue these attacks this evening? that is the concern and that's what sources have been telling me has republicans on edge as the president arrives in georgia this evening. if he spends the hour and a half of his rally attacking the republican governor, the republican secretary of state, that will not be helpful to the cause. that b

publicly he's called kemp hapless and said he was sorry he supported him. so in the vein he is speaking this is quite consistent. but governor kemp, before the moron/nut job thing came out said he still stands with president trump. can you shed any light on this and what governor kemp is thinking, what's going on there? >> yeah, you can tie this back to the reason why senators kelly loeffler and david perdue are welcoming trump to georgia tomorrow. it's because this is a base turnout election. they can't afford to alienate any of the republican base. that means they can't afford to antagonize president trump. they're trying to get as many of those 2.5 million voters, about 2.5 million voters who voted for president trump in november to come back to the polls. by doing that, they have got to rally those core conservative voters who back him. he's the most popular republican in georgia. so you've got to keep on appealing to them. that's why they're walking this fine line. that's why the governor is not hitting back at president trump because he knows not only

cnn learned the president called governor kemp and put pressure on him to get the election results in that state, showing joe biden won thrown out. let's get to ryan nobles at the site in georgia tonight. what happened? >> reporter: this has to be a worst case scenario for republicans, ana, we're already nervous about this rally here tonight in georgia. republicans in georgia are hoping the president focuses all on these runoff elections between david purdue and john, rafael and kelly. they want him to amplify the case for the republican candidates in terms of keeping the senate majority in republican hands and not talk about overturning the results of the election, the presidential election that's already been settled. in fact, three recounts have confirmed that joe biden was the winner here in georgia but we learned that this morning, president trump in a phone call with brian kemp, the governor here who is a republican and a trump supporter and someone that trump has been openly battling with, that trump was putting pressure on kemp to convince members of the legislature to take st

he quickly responded to kemp saying, but you never got the signature verification. there are people refusing to do what you ask. why are they hideing? at least immediately ask for a special session of the legislature. you can do that easily and immediately and you need to, but kemp still refusing to do so now this has become a problem for republicans not just here in georgia, washington, across the country because of these vitally important runoff elections happening in this state. two races that determines who controls the united states senate in the next congress. the republicans need to win at least one of them and there appears to be a growing set of confidence that is lacking among trump supporters here in georgia. i have been to a number of republican events here where trump supporters lashed out at republican leaders, demanding to know why they aren't doing more to try and help president trump overturn the result of the election as opposed to focusing on the race at hand and there is concern tonight among republicans that when the president comes here tonight

claiming that kemp was incompetent, that kemp hasn't done enough to pursue the president's false election claims. kemp was not at the rally because he was dealing with the death of a young family friend. perhaps highlighting the problem with the rhetoric, the president said that some people close to him have urged others not to votes in this upcoming special election. >> friends of mine say, let's not vote. we're not going to vote because we're angry. they're friends of mine. >> reporter: so that sort of hits the nail on the head of the inherent contra addition of what the president was trying to do -- convincing people that the election votes in georgia were fraudulent but also that they should trust the system enough to cast their ballots in january. purdue and loeffler were invited to speak at one point, but at some points they were drowned out by people chanting about the election results. that is why republicans are very concerned about the message the president continues to push on the election. >> so there was an interesting development, sarah, just prior to that rally as we learne

something kemp has previously noted he has no power to do. kemp then declined the overture from trump, according to the person. joining me with more details is nbc's josh lederman who's been standing by for us and following the story. he's outside the white house. josh, thanks for joining us on this, really appreciate it. not surprising but nonetheless the phone call, unbelievable. talk us through what you know so far. >> yeah, not surprising as you point out, yasmin, because president trump has essentially been calling for this out in the open in public for weeks. pressuring governor brian kemp in public, on twitter, in his public comments, to try to intervene in the election in georgia as well as to enact a recount of those rematching of those signatures. he's also been putting pressure on other officials in the state, including the secretary of state there to try to do the same. there's been consistent pushback from republicans in the state who have said, look, we are republicans by and large, these officials say they voted for president t

senate. >> president trump criticized your governor, governor brian coup kemp. governor kemp appointed you to the senate. you criticized the election process as well. can you tell us where your loyalty lies as you vie to represent the state of georgia? is it with governor kemp or president trump? >> lisa, my loyalties are with georgia. i had a calling to public service to serve the people of georgia. i have lived the american dream. i want to make sure every georgian can do that. >> what did you think? >> i think that's the definition of a dodge. obviously, that was a tough question for her. the voters that she needs to turn out are those trump voters. really, it's been these republican state leaders who have ended up being sort of the heroes in upholding democracy in this country. you saw governor kemp yesterday hold the line and say that he wasn't going to give in to the demands that president trump is making here. also said it wasn't in his authority to do some of the things that president trump is asking him to do. i think that will be another issue that peo

kemp certified the president's loss in georgia, which enraged potus. earlier last month, he sat with advisers and plotted out a call to scream at kemp. yes, you've got to have a detailed plan for all your important screaming. you can't just wing it. it's not a pandemic. and when he got the governor on the phone, the president urged kemp to do more to fight for him in georgia, publicly echo his claims of fraud, and appear more regularly on television. in response, kemp was noncommittal. wow, how did that go? "thanks, mr. president, but just looking ahead on my calendar, i have something on here you don't: a future." even more forcefully, kemp's office slapped the president down with a statement saying "georgia law prohibits the governor from interfering in elections." and that's saying something. not much is prohibited by georgia law. they let you marry a gun as long as it's 16. the president's attack on georgia's election integrity is a big deal, because in about a month, the state is holding two count them, two-- runoffs that will determine which part

and president trump asked brian kemp for this, it does appear that kemp is in any move to move forward in that respect. it seems clear that the results is going to stand after three different recounts showing that joe biden won the election. republicans focusing the president to be facing off on this run-off, loeffler and warnock. they need to show up on january 5th and cast a ballot in favor of those two candidates. republicans need to win one of those seats to redeem the majority in the united states senate. but, there is real worry tonight for republicans that even if the president does specifically send that message is going to be coupled with his ongoing grievances of the process here and as the crowd here in georgia is going to eat it up. already tonight, kelly loeffler started talking about the election. she asked the crowd here to vote early and asking for absentee ballot. they responded by using chant "stop the steal" which the president used the chant over and over as that can backup this claim of november. the question is which version of president trump will we see here ton
